Einstalbert··on What Unsustainable Growth Looks Like: Herbalife, Groupon, and More
There is actually a local chain in Southern California called Bruxie that sells waffles after failing to impress high-end restaurants with their product. It is very popular and placed strategically around hip places, e.g. colleges. I was tied heavily with its inception and I know just how unsustainable the owner wants it to be. At this point, he only makes money by opening stores. He fully intends to Krispie Kreme his way through the state or country, if he can, and then let it collapse. It happened to KK, it happened to ToGos, it'll happen again.
Einstalbert··on Inactive Account Manager
What is odd to me is that it used to work pefectly fine. Around two or three years ago, however, I believe the changed the way their login system worked and it suddenly had trouble keeping more than one account logged in. I was super happy with Gmail when I had my @gmail.com, @personaldomain1.com, etc. accounts all open at once.

My solution to that problem has been to largely ignore my other inboxes...

Einstalbert··on SomaFM: "We need to raise $410 by the end of the day."
This stuff should be blocked from this site. I'm surprised it made it to the front page.
Einstalbert··on Painless Windows Workstation Setup with Boxstarter
This seems like a slightly more technical version of https://ninite.com/ ... Most users just want to grab their usual suspects of 5-15 apps on a fresh machine and GO!

I want to use Boxstarter to build a VM template but I've never really used any of the items it mentions. I realize it isn't trying to complete with ninite, but I sure would like a "click x buttons then hit download" version of this Boxstarter/Chocolatey stuff.

Einstalbert··on Painless Windows Workstation Setup with Boxstarter
Same. It punches through to an account with licensing on it. Specific VS licensing, too, as our MSDN account doesn't offer anything other than the installer unless we opt to buy seats.
Einstalbert··on The Machine Stops (1909)
So much of human interaction is made difficult by our lack of understanding one another. I love these silly little fantasy worlds that we busy ourselves with, hell even television shows, because it gives people something else to share in common. You experienced the story, the music, the feel of the last episode of X, Y, Z, right? I was there, too, in a way. Let's share our thoughts.

Maybe if humans take it too far and forget to share, or neglect other things along the way, that the machine will stop.

Einstalbert··on Facebook earnings gain as ad sales surge 82%; CFO is stepping down
As with Skype, I wait for the day when another Facebook competitor becomes ubiquitous enough to warrant switching. I am waiting for pretty much anything, so long as it has the market share with friends and family.
Einstalbert··on Amazon Snags Older HBO Shows For Web Streaming
I sat through 20 minutes of a co-worker directly comparing these two items the other day. As different as they are, people look to both company's offerings like they're competing neck and neck.
Einstalbert··on New generic top-level domains
I would love to take the sting out of someone getting the one or two "primary" domains for an IP, even something generic a concept as "grow.com" or something along those lines, and splitting it up so that just about anybody can get a specific flavor in. "No, we're not grow.com, but we're also not grow.xxx or grow.medical, we're grow.coffee!"
Einstalbert··on Steam Gauge: Steam’s most popular games
It is frightening, but I wonder about the previous generations. A hundred years ago, how did an individual self-medicate their problems? Was there more crime, suicide, etc. as a result? People don't usually "change" all that much from generation to generation, and I don't want to get into some trap of thinking about "golden days" or any of that nonsense; people have always been fitful and worried, depressive even. How did they cope?

I look at people in my parent's generation who have no hobbies, no outlets, nothing... They are bored individuals who watch the news and maybe do some gardening. I would love to breach the age gap and introduce a great uncle to a video game, or my great grandmother to scrabble online. I feel like the last generation that will ever go lonely unless by decision, and I owe it in part to these fantastical video games.

Einstalbert··on Dropbox acquires Loom (YC W12)
Agreed 100% It's like selling someone a rubber balloon. We're buying services and products, not party favors. We expect balloons to pop.
Einstalbert··on Building Carousel: How we made our networked mobile app feel fast and local
As little as this site enjoys political interference with technology and progress, I think this is an unfortunate issue that a lot of people should hesitate over when considering continual use of Dropbox and its related products. I'd love to switch, but then... I'd also like something as easy as Dropbox for sharing photos and keeping light backups.
Einstalbert··on Carousel – Gallery from Dropbox for photos and videos
I want to like FlickR so much. I've been a premium member for years but their upload client for more than a few photos at a time is garbage. I also don't like how crude their online organization options are. I know with a bit of polish, it can be the king of ease in interface, but right now I am looking for something a bit more modern. Carousel COULD have been a no-brainer replacement, but I am glad I came here to get the insight of others; while FlickR may do a lot of things wrong, it sounds like Dropbox fails even harder on the organizational scale (root folders?)
Einstalbert··on Why Facebook should worry about Tencent
In addition, I think that they are definitely going to be a billion-dollar company and will probably be very popular in South Africa where they have roots, but to ask why people don't know or care about them as much as Amazon, to name the example, seems... well, obvious. I order stuff from Amazon twice a week! I've only ever heard of this company due to its Riot shares. I can see why a South African wouldn't see Amazon as very interesting, though... do you get 2 day shipping out there?
Einstalbert··on The Other Side of Depression
Eerily similar to a family member's journey, though without the gardening bit (just yet!), so I am glad you shared this. Self medication isn't always bad, but there's certainly a lot less data to work with in trying to find out the proper dosage and the legal gray areas for certain states or countries.
Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
I do sort of feel as though this was a "fish in the barrel" target that people are feeling good about. Yes, everything small matters in large numbers, but I don't think this is really much to show in terms of LGBT rights progress. It has the veneer of the armchair activism you see on Tumblr.
Einstalbert··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
Thank you for this, thank you.
Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Huh. I fail to see how that has to do with this character at all but thank you for the information; I really didn't think Mozilla acted as a pseudo-EFF.
Einstalbert··on What's The Value of a Free Lunch?
Ah, what a joke. I recall someone not putting it on their timesheet and instead going directly to the Department of Labor. Good on them, I say. I've got a vested interested in the company doing well, but that was a ridiculous policy.
Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Let's say that he did hold that extreme opinion. He's also one person in a greater company and without the direct means to make that interesting viewpoint come to light. It's also unsure if he even had the intention to bring it to fruition.

However, if he did start to act on a plan to bring it to fruition, using the company's resources or heck, even his personal off-time resources, don't you think -that- would be the point at which people should be calling for his ousting?

Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
I would feel the same way if he contributed a million dollars to something far more extreme, and I am not sure if it would carry any more or less weight if that extremity were suddenly as personal or close to home as is the matter of gay marriage. Some people do like to hide behind the concept that, if you're not gay then why are you having X, Y, Z opinion in this conversation; I wanted to throw it out there that, as a gay man that loves his boyfriend but also loves people's opinions and the right to have them, this seems like a damn shame.

Mozilla wasn't going to become some bastion for social counter-productivity just because one man, even in the CEO position, held a certain number of opinions; I trust him more than that, I trust Mozilla more than that, and I trust our ability to find out and handle that if it were indeed to happen.

Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Tim Cook is gay? It doesn't mention that anywhere on his wikipedia page and I am pretty surprised to hear about it. Inspired, actually, as a gay person that thinks telling people your sexuality is about as relevant in most situations as telling people your favorite flavor of ice cream.
Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Hmm, I didn't think about that, good point. To me, they have just always been the group of people that are making a pretty nice browser alternative to IE and adding a key piece to the whole "competition is good for innovation" mantra.
Einstalbert··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
I love people's ability to have horrible beliefs a lot more than the (now legal) ability to marry my boyfriend, so this is unfortunate to hear. I've always admired Mozilla for what it does, a lot more than other companies that get painted as homophobic (Chick Fil A?), so this is too bad. I think he was fine where he was, and his opinions on people matter as much to me as I suspect my opinions matter to anyone else.
Einstalbert··on What's The Value of a Free Lunch?
Our company has been in hot water for not properly compensating employees during our "free lunch / trainings" that we hold every so often. Yes, you're giving them free food, no they don't get a choice and yes that's illegal. Pay up, clueless managers.
Einstalbert··on Update on Coinbase Data Security
Many people automatically assume that this word means something bad. Something about "cetic" makes them think "septic" or "toxic" even. I've had to explain the word a few times to co-workers. I picked it up from a crappy song, come on guys!
Einstalbert··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
Reputation is sacred for these kinds of companies and this stuff isn't helping. I was just about to sign up for them, I had their tab open in my browser, but I sincerely thought something like this would happen and that I would "be on a list." Tab's closed, now.
Einstalbert··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
OKCupid, for people without those overbearing, quietly judgmental matchmaking aunts, friends of parents, co-workers, etc.
Einstalbert··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
Agreed. I've dealt with mental illness in my family since I was a young child. It's affected my entire life. It's not just some meandering mood or state of mind, it's a frightening thing for which most people have no time or patience.
Einstalbert··on California police use of body cameras cuts violence and complaints (2013)
Unfortunately, there isn't a person asking those questions. More often than not, officers watch out for each other (read: The Blue Code of Silence) and internal investigations are notoriously a joke. I'd love to see someone not affiliated with police officers ask one of them why they generate so many complaints, without also becoming a complaint.
