EdwardDiego··on What xAI's Grok build CLI sends to xAI: A wire-level analysis
Oh and they just shipped Grok in Cursor. Yay.
EdwardDiego··on Snails' teeth beats spider silk as nature's strongest material (2015)
A teenager in Australia died due to this after eating a dog slug as a dare.
EdwardDiego··on Spider venom kills varroa mites without harming honeybees
Then all the scientists who study apiary are wrong and someone in the HN comments knows better than all of them.

Congratulations, I look forward to your Nobel prize.

EdwardDiego··on Spider venom kills varroa mites without harming honeybees
Big Ag was already using those poisons before varroa, so if it was the cause, you would've seen it manifest before varroa.
EdwardDiego··on Spider venom kills varroa mites without harming honeybees
Native bees. Apis mellifera are introduced bees across most of the world.

But yes, there are other pollinators like butterflies, moths, flies, birds, etc.

EdwardDiego··on Farmer, marketer at odds over sales of white nectarines
Plant variety rights / plant patents exist for the same reason that regular patents do, it's believed that it encourages people to innovate.

Whether or not that's the case, I'll leave to others to argue.

EdwardDiego··on Egg consumption inversely correlated with Alzheimer's
They do. These days generally the main prohibition is pig derived products, but plenty of SDAs still choose to be vegetarian. I'm not an SDA, but my daughter is.
EdwardDiego··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
Yes, but typically not handguns, the prevalence of them in the US is unusual compared to other Western countries.
EdwardDiego··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
Not handguns though. Well, not legally.
EdwardDiego··on Why Won't Europe Build AI Data Centers in Iceland?
> an island runs its servers on volcanoes and waterfalls

Going out on a limb, the word "volcanoes" may be part of why, I know I was particularly perturbed when I found out my bank's failover data centre was about 20km away from their main one in a city built on an active monogenetic volcanic field.

Also, not sure how important latency is, but Iceland is rather far from mainland Europe.

EdwardDiego··on How a YouTube video accidentally proved Libya's sand cat does exist
There's probably 10 in Russian apartments already, next door to the ocelots.
EdwardDiego··on Reid Hoffman says SpaceX 'not an AI company', xAI 'complete train wreck'
The faux outrage is odd.
EdwardDiego··on Turns Out, There Is a Cabal of Elite Crazies Trying to Control the World
Yep, that's the alcohol talking, in the morning you'll be sober and you might.
EdwardDiego··on The Cold War's Accidental Whale Observatory
> But sosus was not really about listening.

Being able to hear and identify any and all Russian submarines sortieing into the North Atlantic through the GIUK gap was invaluable even without triangulation.

EdwardDiego··on The Cold War's Accidental Whale Observatory
I suspect that ringing up the Kremlin and saying "A Seawolf attack sub right now has an excellent firing solution on your rather expensive ballistic missile submarine, no, I'm not bluffing, these are the co-ordinates, and we would definitely be able to recover it after we sink it given how close it is to our coast and how shallow the seas are. So how about we don't sink your submarine and recover your classified technology, as a sign of good faith, and we talk this out?" might be one way.
EdwardDiego··on DOS Game "F-15 Strike Eagle II" reversing project needs DOS test pilots
That reminds me of when a friend convinced me to try to get into Falcon BMS. The community has created thousands of pages of documentation on flying the Falcon, operating the various weapon systems, as well as things like energy management, formation flying techniques etc. etc.

https://wiki.falcon-bms.com/en/manuals

It's really impressive, but I did not have the time to put into learning it.

EdwardDiego··on DOS Game "F-15 Strike Eagle II" reversing project needs DOS test pilots
A friend and I did this with Privateer II (the one with incessant FMV starring a young Clive Owen) - pilot on the gamepad, navigator / weapons officer on the keyboard.

Was this the one that you could play co-op with a friend in a front seat / back seat role? Or was it III? I spent so long ringing my friend on the landline to help set up his modem configuration, then having him dial in again, starting the game, him disconnecting again, me ringing him to see what had happened that time etc. etc. When we finally got it working, we played it so incessantly that his Mum banned him from playing it over the modem as we were tying up the sole phone line for hours.

I would love to find similar multiplayer in other flight sims, or space sims. I also really want to get this game working again and see if I can nostalgia bait my friend.

I can still remember the intro music for F-19 as played through the built-in PC speaker, the harsh tinniness just made it more of a banger.

And yep, that copy protection is why I can tell my Floggers from my Backfires at the limits of FLIR range lol.

EdwardDiego··on Russell Vought is going to destroy American Science
Err... what?
EdwardDiego··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
> Choosing a leader who lies constantly and boasts of enjoying killing people seems like an unnecessary mistake.

I hate to break this to you, but you're already rocking multiple of them.

EdwardDiego··on Law Enforcement's "Warrior" Problem (2015)
I'm in a Commonwealth country, so our police ranks derive from the Metropolitan Police of London - there's still a sergeant rank, but otherwise it's constable, inspector etc.
EdwardDiego··on xAI is looking more like a datacentre REIT than a frontier lab
I just don't like the clever corporate shell games Musk has been playing with his related party businesses to juice revenues and keep share prices up - e.g., SpaceX buying $131 million worth of Cybertrucks from Tesla, or SpaceX buying xAI.

It's clever business perhaps, but it's terrible governance.

But then Musk will always control the majority of voting rights in SpaceX, so not like the shareholders are able to vote to remove him from the board. Being fair, it's the same share structure Zuckerberg uses to retain control over Meta, in case I give the impression that I think only Musk is doing this.

Which is why I'd never buy shares in either of them, the directors are supposed to act in the best interests of all shareholders, and well, if you can't vote on director appointments, you can't do anything when they decide to act in the best interests of a few shareholders.

Also moves spend from capex to opex for your competitors - their access to your GPUs so don't have to wait to buy so many of their own, and I'm going to take a stab that those puppies are going to depreciate hard.

But better to make some money with it while trying to catch up than none money hoping you _can_ catch up.

I got approached by a recruiter to directly train Grok on coding, so it seems like they're still trying to build a model that's better at coding than shitposting at least?
EdwardDiego··on Show HN: GitMo – Google Drive-like auto sync for GitHub
TBH, not the best name.
EdwardDiego··on US attorney opens investigation into California elections-sends prosecutor to LA

EdwardDiego··on Deflock hits 100k ALPRs Mapped in USA
Honey, did you order a ski mask and a hammer because someone is delivering them now according to the cam... nevermind.
EdwardDiego··on US DOJ opens criminal inquiry into E Jean Carroll
Pity that the anti-weaponization fund only pays out if the government weaponizing the law against you was Democratic. (Seriously). Otherwise, she'd have a bloody decent claim, I reckon.
EdwardDiego··on Go: Support for Generic Methods
If generics replace code generation or hand coding a concrete implementation for specific types or... operating against interface{} and then switching based on runtime type, then I strongly disagree that it makes reading Go code harder, it makes it, IMO, easier.

But that's the thing, it's just IMO.
