Edmond··on Density raises $51M Series C led by Kleiner Perkins
I went further, setup a landing page and sent out some customer validation emails...most responded that they didn't have the problem.

Ultimately I didn't pursue it mainly because I had no real passion for the idea itself; it was a problem only when I was traveling and staying at busy hotels with many other business travelers wanting to use the gym at the same time.

Edmond··on Viewpoint: 'I feel like I was accidentally hired'
My comment wasn't meant to disparage federally driven innovation in general. I am referring more specifically to the software and information technology industry.
Edmond··on Viewpoint: 'I feel like I was accidentally hired'
Not sure where the author got his numbers from but if you read the full article, the author notes that the numbers/percentages themselves can be misleading, because that 3.1% could include the security guard who swipes your badge or some other peripheral role at a technology company.

It is also true that Blacks do in fact quit the industry at high rates due to bias treatment; based on the number of computer science and technology degrees granted to blacks, their representation should be higher if there was higher retention.

It is also the case that blacks in technology often end in up in specific sectors of the industry, for instance you'll find much higher black representation in the public sector, specifically in the federal government...unfortunately that is not likely to be the source of the next great tech innovator.

Edmond··on Amazon Honeycode – build web and mobile apps without writing code
As someone working in this space (codesolvent.com)...color me unimpressed so far.

Of course with AWS resources this can change with time. They did hype this some months back, I was expecting something a bit more impressive OOTB.

Edmond··on Ask HN: How does your company manage its encryption keys?
Lots of decent advise here already...be wary of a complicated (fancy product) approach and security theater....frankly when it comes to secret management the KISS principle should apply, with the caveat that it should be secure of course.
Edmond··on Response to Tim Bray's Departure
When your first instinct is to defend those with all the power and privilege, you've already lost the debate. Especially at a moment like this.
Edmond··on ReMarkable’s redesigned e-paper tablet is more powerful and more papery
Hopefully they'll consider the functionally minded customer soon.

I would be happy with a cheapish form factor option, it doesn't have to be the slick looking product that is the only option currently available.

Edmond··on ReMarkable’s redesigned e-paper tablet is more powerful and more papery
Nice and intriguing but unfortunately this is still priced as a premium product.

Obviously the company making it has its reasons for pricing but a product like this needs to be priced as an accessible consumer electronics product (ie $50-$100).

Edmond··on Sequoia gives away $21M investment in Finix as it walks away from deal
Whenever I hear about some startup going under after absorbing millions I always wonder the same, "if only they'd invested that $75 million in 75 judiciously chosen companies"...

Of course the people making these clearly poor investment decisions have perfected their justifications.

Edmond··on Beer Drinkers Guide to SAML
Maybe we got lucky with the configuration but we use the approach documented for the keycloak-saml-adapter with Jetty as the app server.

There is still a lot work done to ensure keys are generated in the proper locations and that necessary product id values (corresponds to SAML SP entityID) are generated.

In short, it is not a simple plug-n-play, lots of hacking to get the result we needed but the adapter itself does what it needs to do.

Edmond··on Beer Drinkers Guide to SAML
The problem with SAML et al is not Java or XML. The problem is the spec conflating transport protocol concerns with the content format concern.

If you can cleanly separate the transport component's cryptography (making sure the content is secure and private) from the formatting and processing of the actual content it makes things a lot clearer.

Edmond··on Beer Drinkers Guide to SAML
Cheers for keycloak, title pun intended :)

We use it for Solvent (https://codesolvent.com) login to product instances and it works excellently.

Edmond··on Ask HN: What's your latest failed side project and why?
I am looking at this and thinking, how many times would a typical user need this? I occasionally find myself needing to manipulate excel documents but not enough to want to invest in dedicated software.

Is this meant to support ETL workflows?

Is it possible to create transform recipe packs as part of the product offering? Basically pre-built configuration instead of users doing this. Maybe provide the software for free and sell the recipes?

Is this something you can package as a component that other ETL products could plug into? This can be either native plugins or some kind of web API front-end.

Just spitballing :)

Edmond··on My Startup Failed, So We Open-Sourced the Tech
Maybe you should regroup and try to make this your next startup?

As alluded to by some of the comments, this was probably a misguided effort for the original startup but could be worth pursuing by itself.

I believe this is how the likes of Slack, twitter and a number of other companies came to be.

Edmond··on How to Write Usefully
You can start by not using the word: "Usefully" :)
Edmond··on Google App Maker Shutting Down
We're cooking up a different angle to App Maker type software.

Check it out if you're still into this type of stuff:)...happy to answer questions.

Edmond··on Volkswagen exec admits full self-driving cars 'may never happen'
>A leader that fires people for challenging relevant mainstream opinions is not any kind of leader I want to work for or follow.

There we go...most of the skepticism about self-driving cars appears to be driven by ideology and less by the actual evidence. "Mainstream opinions"...it is not an opinion, there are literally thousands of these cars being tested/piloted and improved upon constantly.

Might it take a little longer to get to nirvana? probably, but it borders on delusion at this point for anyone to say it will never happen.

Edmond··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
The problem products like Postman and others (Elastic et al) are having is one of "have your cake and eat it too".

For the past decade a number products rode the free software love boat, the gambit was to get organic community love and free marketing and hope that it somehow translates into VC endorsed financial rewards. This does not seem to be working out as expected.

Edmond··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
Full feature set alternative, APIMolder:

Mock server OOTB and a bunch of other goodies.

Edmond··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
For a more full feature set product there is APIMolder:

You get a mock server OOTB.

Edmond··on When good ideas make bad business
This sounds like it could be a useful feature of some other healthcare product, ie not a standalone product.

Maybe try selling the tech asset, you might be able to more than recoup your investment :)

Edmond··on IBM CTO Sees Smaller Container Platforms Ahead
3...2...1...and..a new hype cycle begins...or at least IBM hopes it does.
Edmond··on Twitter Will Finally Stop Making Your Images Look Terrible
The phenomenon of meme photo degradation is indeed an interesting one.

I think that is one reason I have always been put off by memes even when they come from loved ones, the photos look LITERALLY dirty, as if passed around by hand :)

Edmond··on Open-source and the demise of proprietary software (2018)
It shouldn't be surprising that JetBrains is doing well.

Even with sectors like developer tools, there is a lot of room for creating value-added solutions that are proprietary, and that customers will happily pay good money for.

Edmond··on Open-source and the demise of proprietary software (2018)
The conclusion is simply not backed by reality. There are certainly realms where open source has supplanted proprietary counterparts and they all mostly fall under infrastructure type software.

We all use these infrastructure open source software products because they serve needs that practically anyone doing technology work will find themselves to have.

The larger universe of commercial software is HUGE and most of it is proprietary and will remain that way.

Edmond··on Ask HN: What are successful projects that started as prototyped hypotheses?
Maybe the OP needs to clarify what type of "problems" exactly he is referring to..the examples he gives point to problems requiring significant engineering efforts, which is very different from the examples you note above.
Edmond··on Cryptoqueen: A woman scammed the world, then vanished
