Ecco··on Show HN: Tariff Calculator for Amazon
Fun! That being said, I think that the extension is very inaccurate because it can't know how much the product was actually paid for when imported from China (and therefore tariffed).

I would argue the 40% estimate, even though probably correct some of the time, is very often vastly overestimated. Consumers mostly pay for last-mile delivery, marketing, and the retailer's margin. The price paid in bulk to manufacturers is usually a very small fraction of the retail price.

Ecco··on Payment processors shouldn't be able to charge through an expired card
Weird. What is the expiration date for, then?
Ecco··on Airbnb Now Shows the Full Price of Your Stay by Default
FINALLY! Boy was this a dark pattern. So many landlords abusing this system with super low rates and crazy high fees. Got bitten by this on multiple occasions and eventually moved to booking.com out of spite. I'm glad they fixed this.
Ecco··on Why It's Easier to Manage 4 People Than It Is to Manage 1 Person
Seriously what's the point of a manager in that scenario?
Ecco··on SDL2 for macOS 9 "rough draft"
I commented that because the author said "dealing with the foibles of CodeWarrior". I guess in the scenario cross-compiling wouldn't be easy, but possibly easier?
Ecco··on SDL2 for macOS 9 "rough draft"
Wouldn't it be easier to cross-compile using a modern LLVM/GCC? I assume both have 68k backends?
Ecco··on [dead]
Ok so wait, the submission I just linked to earlier is now unflagged? That's good I guess, but what's going on??

Ecco··on A cross-platform multi-target dotfiles manager written in Rust
Oh, interesting, thanks!

And I don’t even bother with ignoring files! I just git add the ones I want to track :)

Ecco··on A cross-platform multi-target dotfiles manager written in Rust
Dumb yet serious question : what problem is a dotfile manager even trying to solve?

Personally I have a git repo in my home directory and just commit dotfiles to it. The only drawback is that git always think there’s a git repo no matter where I am in my home, so I usually rename the .git folder to .git_hidden. And on the (rare) occasion that I want to update one of my dotfiles I just rename the .git_hidden directory back to .git.

It’s really just two “mv” commands, I can’t believe you need a tool for just that.

What am I missing out on?

Ecco··on FFmpeg School of Assembly Language
I guess your question could be rephrased as "couldn't we come up with better compilers?" (LLM-based or not, brute force based or not).

I don't have an answer but I believe that a lot of effort has been put in making (very smart) compilers already, so if it's even possible I doubt it's easy.

I also believe there are some cases where it's simply not possible for a compiler to beat handwritten assembly : indeed there is only so much info you can convey in a C program, and a developer who's aware of the whole program's behavior might be able to make extra assumptions (not written in the C code) and therefore beat a compiler. I'm sure people here would be able to come up with great practical examples of this.

Very cool! Website bug report (hoping somebody sees that): on my phone (iPhone latest iOS) the videos would automatically play in full screen when scrolling the page. Really annoying :)

I recommend a Dynalink AX3600. Really fast CPU, tons of RAM, great WiFi, and works perfectly with OpenWrt. $59 on Amazon.

There was a rumor about an optical sensor on the side of a joycon that would turn it into a mouse. Is this out of the equation? This would have been awesome!

Ecco··on Frosted Glass from Games to the Web: HTML glass UI inspired by AAA game dev
I agree that it looks nice and similar to what SSS eventually renders like. But strictly speaking it's not SSS. Actual SSS happens when the medium is somewhat transparent (light can enter the material) but also diffusive (light gets randomly bounced around within the material). Glass lacks this second property. A good example of a material exhibiting strong SSS would be wax.

Not that this matters much anyway, the effect is cool nonetheless, albeit a little bit improperly named.

Ecco··on Frosted Glass from Games to the Web: HTML glass UI inspired by AAA game dev
Yes, it looks similar. But it's still not sub surface scattering.

Light inside the frosted glass just goes in a straight direction. It will not behave like this : https://blendamator.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/schema-ra...

Ecco··on Frosted Glass from Games to the Web: HTML glass UI inspired by AAA game dev
I'm pretty sure there is no subsurface scattering in frosted glass. Indeed frosted glass is just regular glass with a frosted surface. Below the surface, it's just pure glass, which does not scatter light.
Ecco··on CSS gets a new logo and it uses the color `rebeccapurple`
Without even judging the overall design (personally I don't mind the simplicity), why on earth do they use such inconsistent fonts? 3 different font sizes (and maybe also mismatching horizontal spacings) for 5 assorted logos??? This is insane...

> Personally, I value my own time well above my job's hourly rate

Would you mind elaborating? Because I would argue that, by engaging daily with your employer in a trade of your time for money, you value your time exactly your job’s hourly rate.

Ecco··on iPhone 16 Pro Storage Expansion 128GB to 1TB [video]
Interesting, I’ve never seen this before. How does it compare to regular gooey or liquid flux? Also how does it work? Just bringing a chunk of rosin next to a soldering iron would just vaporize the flux as seen on the video?
Ecco··on iPhone 16 Pro Storage Expansion 128GB to 1TB [video]
What is the white powdery/smokey stuff he drops on the eMMC chip using the soldering iron at 7min27s? Some kind of flux?
Ecco··on Have you ever seen soldering this close? [video]
Actually I have, and you can too! All you need is a stereo microscope - even a cheap, sub-$100 will do :)

Now that being said, I would have never been able to record such a high quality video! The depth of field in particular is really amazing :)

Ecco··on Godot on iPad, Toolbars, Importers, Embedding, Debugger
Very interesting, but I can't help but wonder: are developers really interested in working on an iPad? I feel like this is exactly the kind of job where a laptop is more efficient, for a couple reasons: 1/ Physical keyboard 2/ Over extended periods of time, even though more intuitive, touchscreen feels more exhausting to use than touchpad because you can't easily rest your hands.

And if the targeted usage is "iPad with a keyboard on a desk" well, at this point it's mostly a laptop anyway so as a developer why even bother getting a tablet in the first place?
