EamonnMR··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
I sometimes get these as push notifications with my username added to them.
EamonnMR··on When SVG almost got network support for raw sockets
The loss of the mouse and keyboard as primary input devices is an underrated part of why everything feels worse now compared to the flash era. Web is a very different target now than it was. Also, the flash game ecosystem was intertwined with the animation ecosystem and the advent of streaming full motion video devalued animation skills.

Anyway nowdays we have Godot and Unity which are both very nice. But there were definitely lost years where amateur gamedev was less accessable.

EamonnMR··on Vicuna: An open-source chatbot impressing GPT-4 with 90% ChatGPT quality
Lately I've seen 'Open Source' thrown around a lot in the AI space with little regard to if the thing in question is actually using an OSI license.
EamonnMR··on BlenderGPT: Use commands in English to control Blender with OpenAI's GPT-4
"The generated code might not always be correct. In that case, run it again lmao" is the best documentation I've read all week.
EamonnMR··on Docker
What I've deen is in-house base images in AWS's registry but still pulling stuff like Fedora base images from dockerhub.
EamonnMR··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
Money Printer Go Brrr and the Scorpion and the Frog fable in a Frontline Documentary, what a time to be alive.
EamonnMR··on Robots have been about to take all the jobs for 100 years
Was anyone ever laughing though? This isn't comeuppance. This is the other half of the Titanic sinking.
EamonnMR··on “Off switch” makes explosives safer
My understanding is that right now 'our explosives got wet' fails safe. This would invert that situation.
EamonnMR··on “Off switch” makes explosives safer
Water has a tendency to get into places it's not supposed to. I'd hate for a roof leak to cause a warehouse explosion.
EamonnMR··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
I use fzf for all of my searching needs, especially on Mac where the default search is hot garbage.
EamonnMR··on Yes, you should still learn to code
I was going for the invention of fortran, I just did the math very incorrectly
EamonnMR··on Mastodon hit 10M users
Being able to follow just hashtags and users and never getting recommended garbage is very nice. I mostly just use Twitter to follow Dril now.
EamonnMR··on AWS’s anti-competitive move hidden in plain sight
They did this with managed Kafka too.
EamonnMR··on Yes, you should still learn to code
If ChatGPT existed 47 years ago programming as we know it never would have been invented, and we'd just ask our room sized tabulation machines to kindly do payroll.
EamonnMR··on Godot Arrives in the Epic Games Store
I haven't tried it in four, but trying to get an animated model in blender into godot in 3 was a total mess. You needed to configure the animations in a very specific non-obvious way and there were a ton of gotchas.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
I mean, it's similar to a Google Doc or whatever for sharing ideas and tutorials, but I get a much prettier URL. And it saves me from writing the same post over and over on multiple forums. And I once helped someone find information about an obscure toy line.
EamonnMR··on High blood caffeine levels may reduce body weight and type 2 diabetes risk
It's dopamine related, same as other stimulants.
EamonnMR··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
Does OpenAI respect Robots.txt? Do we know?
EamonnMR··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
Or just the reign of brevity. Sheer volume is no longer impressive.
EamonnMR··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
Awesome web page, I collect these.
EamonnMR··on Launch HN: Blyss (YC W23) – Homomorphic encryption as a service
At a previous job we used to rent a fair number of servers from companies we couldn't trust (and even if we did, some had security practices so bad that we couldn't be sure they didn't, for example, leave easily exploited backdoors on our boxes. We sunk a fair bit of thought into how we could get some use out of that spare compute we were paying for. Some day, maybe that problem could be solved with FHE, if an efficient scheme could be achieved. Though I'd prefer, in the future, to never be renting shady or insecure servers I suppose.
EamonnMR··on Reddit Is Down
I've seen this one plenty of times.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: Any solo game developers here?
I've gotta say, I've seen your game before. You're very good at marketing.
EamonnMR··on The DeLorean Alpha
Not low-poly enough.
EamonnMR··on Cobble_stone – The texture of your childhood (2021)
This is one of the ones I was poking for, I think I found it:

https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/EXPLOSION_-_SHELL_RICCO...

EamonnMR··on Cobble_stone – The texture of your childhood (2021)
Is it the one Blizzard used for its title card in StarCraft Broodwar?
EamonnMR··on Cobble_stone – The texture of your childhood (2021)
With the release of DiscMaster I embarked on a similar quest for the sound effects of my childhood, though I've been far less successful.
EamonnMR··on Bank run on Silicon Valley Bank
So is this related to Silvergate?
EamonnMR··on Show HN: BBC “In Our Time”, categorised by Dewey Decimal, heavy lifting by GPT
In Our Time is one of the best podcasts out there. Are there any similar ones?
EamonnMR··on Cities: Skylines II
Even if you got past the always online aspects, it just felt like a huge step down from Sim City 4. Too many opaque things going on, too much thrown at you, too high concept, didn't feel like building a model train set anymore.
