EamonnMR··on Statement on AI Risk
Grimes would still have a job if AI got regulated though.
EamonnMR··on Statement on AI Risk
This kind of statement rings hollow as long as they keep building the thing. If they really believed it was a species killing asteroid of a cultural project shouldn't they, I dunno, stop contributing materially to it? Nuclear physicists famously stopped publishing during a critical period...
EamonnMR··on Statement on AI Risk
Stuart Russell's book Human Compatible articulates it well. He agrees that we can't predict how it would behave, and that's what he's worried about.
EamonnMR··on Programming with natural language is going to work (2010)
The way you're using brackets sure resembles Backus-Naur form.
EamonnMR··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
If your spacetime contains black holes you may be entitled to compensation from the manufacturer. Please retain this notice and your receipt. Known in the state of California to cause spaghettification. Offer not valid in worldlines crossing the event horizon.
EamonnMR··on Modding Age of Empires II with a Sprite-Diffuser
The staying power makes me feel kind of sad, because it represents a lack of vitality... they've cleared the local space, like some sort of planetoid, and newcomers have little chance.
EamonnMR··on Venture Predation
Uber's moat is the inertia of its massive customer and not-employee base making it difficult to enforce the regulations it has historically flaunted. In that way, it's similar to why Mastodon can't kill Facebook.
EamonnMR··on Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
Coincidentally, I finally got my Watchy set up today. Though the case is bulky enough that I might take it out and just use a NATO strap.
EamonnMR··on Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
Termux used to be really nice but it's fairly broken now if you installed it from google play.
EamonnMR··on Saturn reclaims 'moon king' title from Jupiter with 62 newfound satellites
Please give all lengths in Rhode Islands.
EamonnMR··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Growing? Or have the same voices who have been saying it since the aughts suddenly been platformed.
EamonnMR··on Why are there no antitrust claims vs. GitHub Copilot, when there is a precedent?
And if indeed it's treated as clean room, does open source need to just pack it in? Are all of our licenses rendered unenforceable?
EamonnMR··on The Cathedral and the Bazaar (1999)
I had a similar experience around 2008 when I was first getting into the type of stuff we talk about around here. My media literacy wasn't what it is now, so I didn't know just how far outside the mainstream some of it was, and I certainly didn't pick up on the underlying politics.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
I believe this was the command in question: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/repair-table.html
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
WordPress may be uniquely bad.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
I would disagree on maintenance being simpler. I have never had Postgres randomly munge a table and require me to run a command to fix it.
EamonnMR··on Fern leaves and cauliflower curds are not fractals (2012)
The thick branches, of course, start out as thin twigs.
EamonnMR··on Tensegrity Wiki
Thrilled to see a wiki off of fandom.
EamonnMR··on SpaceTraders: A multiplayer game built on a free web API
Neat little Elite, shame it has no arcade bits.
EamonnMR··on Shap-E: Generate 3D objects conditioned on text or images
The next super Scribblenauts game is going to be wild.
EamonnMR··on The first empirical study of the real-world economic effects of new AI systems
Have any countermeasures actually been implemented besides blog posts and podcast appearances? Climate activists regularly disrupt traffic, glue themselves to things, and protest pipelines. By contrast folks who believe AI will end the world have a propensity to start AI companies.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: Besides Legos, what’s the best kit for prototyping mechanical devices?
Thanks for the link to Capsela, I'd been wondering what those were called for a while.
EamonnMR··on First up-close images of Mars’s little-known moon Deimos
I remember binging that over ten years ago... glad it's still around.
EamonnMR··on First up-close images of Mars’s little-known moon Deimos
In Marathon it was converted into the titular generation ship and launched towards Tau Ceti. But I suppose you could call Marathon little known too...
EamonnMR··on First up-close images of Mars’s little-known moon Deimos
The soundtrack to that game really stuck with me, as it was installed on the eMacs in our classroom so we played it during indoor recess. Since the addons page is long gone, I threw the soundtrack up on the internet archive.[1] Ben Spees, who did the Soundtrack went on to found the math rock band Mercury Tree.[2]

I mostly remember Ambrosia for the Escape Velocity series though, especially Nova.

EamonnMR··on Wind and solar are now beating coal in the US
Be pretty cool if a wind farm could be tough enough to run normally during a hurricane, though you'd need a lot of storage.
EamonnMR··on Lego breaks ground on first US manufacturing facility
Was it FIRST Lego League?
EamonnMR··on Intranasal vaccine confers broad mucosal and systemic immunity against SARS-CoV2
Intranasal is only viable for people who are truly terrified of needles. Instead of a swollen arm you get the head cold experience. Never again; I hate getting pricked as much as the next guy but I really like being able to breathe through my nose.
EamonnMR··on StableLM: A new open-source language model
I think when they say ethical they're talking about RAIL which has clauses about not doing bad guy stuff with their models, not AGPL.
EamonnMR··on Southwest Airlines halts flight departures amid technology issue
Maybe they also have a 'technology issue' in their recruiting process and they think nobody is applying.
