DuncanIdaho··on Sexism in IT - The JavaOne incident
Abuse is not about physical damage and/or risk to life.

If it were, it doesn't take a bodybuilder to kill or hurt someone with an axe or a knife.

But that's completely besides the point. The point is that in marital abuse - getting hurt (physiologically or psychologically) by someone that was supposed to care for you is always demeaning and hurtful experience.

And its a point that few women know, that male psyche is way more fragile than male physis. Some know and take advantage of it.

Your statement of men not being hurt by verbal (or other forms of psychological) abuse is frankly, naive. A man puts up with it because, frankly unless he moves away (and that's what every sane person should do in my opinion) there is no way for him to defend himself from his mother/spouse without getting a short end.

When you face real and significant discrimination you don't go and try to make a "stand" in a room full of perpetrators.
DuncanIdaho··on Sexism in IT - The JavaOne incident
Honestly, I don't mind.

I like people saying whatever they want to say. If they say stupid shit - then that reflects on them and only on them.

Ok, so the guy doing the presentation and uttering a cleanly well thought out joke is whatever he is. Also Shifra is whatever she is (have you read the thread?).

E.g.: I actually got up and made him apologize for his stupid and offensive joke. On the way out, one woman thanked me and one man told me I should "relax." (I told him he should shut up.)

Statement like that also reflects poorly on the person saying it. I see it as an abuse of power: I am a woman and since I am a woman I will now make you bow down to my might - else I might get all lawyered up on you.

Consider this scenario: It's a JAVA conference and the guy titles his presentation: Explain it to COBOL programmer. And there is a COBOL programmer in the crowd (alog with the rest of the 1% of COBOL programmers) who gets so upset, that he makes a guy apologize for it.

Was the statement offensive? Yes. Was making a fuss worth it? Seriously doubt it.

Like I said, people speak for themselves. Making offensive jokes is highly inappropriate - in any scenario.

I sincerely hope that all the people who are so concerned about morals, do so without discrimination.

>One in five (18 percent) of men have been victims of domestic violence by a wife or female partner as opposed to 13 percent of women by a man.

>One in nine women admit to having used physical aggression against a husband or male partner (compared to one in ten men)

>14 percent of men say that they have been slapped by a partner (compared to 9 percent of women)

>11 percent of men have had a partner threaten to throw something heavy at them (compared to 8 percent of women)

>Only 4 percent of women explained that their behavior (either verbal or physical) was because of drink or drugs (compared to ten percent of men)

>Nearly half (47 percent) of women say that their behaviour (physical or verbal aggression or verbal reasoning) was because "it was the only way I could get through to him"

>Working class men (20 percent) are more likely to have been subjected to physical agression by a wife or female partner than upper or middle class men (15 percent)

>Here and Now's survey reveals that fifteen percent (6.3 million people) of the population say that they have been subjected to physical agression by a husband/wife or hetrosexual partner.

>MORI interviewed a representitive quota sample of 1,978 adults in Great Britain. 1,865 of whom had ever been in a personal relationship with the opposite sex.

>Field work was conducted from 17-21 November 1994 in 150 constituencies. All interviews were conducted face to face in home employing a self completion technique. Data have been weighted to the known profile of the British population.

Merely mentioning that in contemporary times, sexism towards men may be more prevalent as vice versa gets one booed off the stage.

And your question is loaded. There are plenty of sexist jokes going around on medical conferences. Mere notion that women, do not make sexist jokes against men, I find offensive. When in reality, a man complaining about it would be seen as a pussy (sexism?).

In the country where I live it is practically impossible to get stewardship of your kid if you are a man and mother also wants it. Hell I know cases where mother doesn't want the kid, but takes him just to spite the father.

There are loads of evidence that modern civilization is doing something very wrong with its men (especially young men). Lack of role models, bias towards women in affirmative action, bias against men in legislative and enforcement action is resulting in a dramatic shift of gender equality.

And in a bad way. I know dozens of attractive, educated, successful women who can't get a proper mate. Its a sellers market out there for ambitious, educated, refined man - lets say a classic gentleman.

How do you propose a world will look, where we have gone so far, that offending other people is made taboo?

I honestly propose that some people should realize, that life is not all unicorns and cute puppies.

Or as it goes: If you think that I have an attitude problem, perhaps you should check that you don't have a perception problem.

Making fun of/uttering/referencing prejudices targeting women == Sexist.

Using prejudices targeting men == Witty and Feminist.

I am a man. I am not a rapist looking for victim. I am not a bumbling buffoon who can't change a light bulb without falling off a ladder. I do not beat children and women.

I work hard, I go and do risky and unpleasant shit (digging through human excrement to unclog the sewage, etc.) so the rest of my family doesn't have to.

I also make more than I spend and generally try to make myself as useful as possible. I also like kids, though I don't have any of my own yet, I like to hang out with other peoples kids.

And I am sick to tears of my gender being portrayed as monsters preying for our next victim.

DuncanIdaho··on The Inexplicable War on Lemonade Stands
I really don't know why or how. But to me it seems like an inverted 1984 scenario, where instead of "kids" turning in "parents", in current western society parents are trying to beat down on the kids as much as possible.
DuncanIdaho··on The Inexplicable War on Lemonade Stands
I don't know what VIPR squad is doing, but it seem pretty much as European customs officers under Schengen region.

Since there are no border customs checks any more in Schengen area, the customs officers have authority to stop any vehicle and to strip it bare, while searching for a cause for an investigation.

In Slovenia as of this year, customs officers are allowed on private land to perform an inspection of fuel for vehicles (heating oil is basically diesel with lower tax and often used in heavy and farm machinery).

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that its not good keyboard.

I love Thinkpad keyboards I even profess my love publicly (http://www.janezstupar.com/the-best-keyboard-for-programmers).

There are two major beefs with Thinkpad keyboards. First the positioning of fn key and lack of option to remap it is inexcusable. Second the page keys you mentioned.

DuncanIdaho··on Apple’s Lower Prices Are All Part of The Plan
Regarding your complaint of rocking keyboards.

I went and checked my ol' T60 and by god, do T60's keys rock like a drunk sailor.

But it's universally regarded as one of the best laptop keyboards available.

DuncanIdaho··on How Russian Tycoon Yuri Milner Bought His Way Into Silicon Valley
I would be hard pressed to not believe it. From my own experience.

I don't know Yuri - you do.

He may as well be the only honest Russian oligarch (or a front for the only honest Russian oligarch).

But what GP posted is the state of affairs everywhere in eastern block and by far the norm.

Thus you must understand if people think less of you because of your associates. It is an prejudice but a well founded one.

In the end it won't matter anyway. But this is the way things work. I believe I read somewhere that yourself are of Russian ancestry? If so I believe you should be familiar with long tradition of tyranny of the few in Russia.

You (e.g. the government and its cronies) start screaming - we need more control for your security! They are coming for your beer! These hackers are trying to take away your refrigerator!

And Joe Sixpack will gladly turn over any liberties he has.

Just like with TSA. Joe Sixpack obviously couldn't care less. He doesn't care that it is costing him insane amounts of money, he doesn't care that security doesn't really work. He doesn't care about body scanners. Hell I bet that if TSA went and mandated that a random passengers need provide anal relief to TSA agents - JSP would not really care. Because he is a true patriot(tm).

All you need to do is to perform a Jedi mind trick: "You feel safer now."

DuncanIdaho··on Why is JSON so popular? Developers want out of the syntax business
Not sure if serious...

SOAP, WSDL and everything else XML and XML Schema related is overkill for simple interfaces. For complex interfaces it is just - well too complex.

If the time spent creating XML based web services that kinda but not really work (we're only talking interfaces here!) is spent documenting your JSON WS - you get quite a better experience.

Ant this is the reason why everybody has switched to JSON.

DuncanIdaho··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
I didn't mean 100% commitment on programming or whatever.

I meant 100% commitment to a project. So if I'm working for the man - I'm 100% committed to working for the man. If I'm doing a startup then I'm doing that 100%. Hustling vs hacking is not an issue to me. It's just that doing a startup "project" while working for the man would seem inefficient to me. What I mean - if my idea/project has potential - I will find a way to hustle it into a proper 100% thing - else I am risking too much.

I'm the same way with women. I don't even flirt if I am with someone - it just seems a waste of time to me. And I have always been with single woman at a time.

To me if something is worth doing - then it has to be 100%. I don't read two books at a time - I devour them one by one.

Edit: I do have a life - that's why most of this post is meant in a professional context.

DuncanIdaho··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
Some of us are unable to do anything "on the side". When I do something I commit 100% - so if I feel like working after hours - I would just do my regular work.
DuncanIdaho··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
How about training a replacement?

On the other hand - if you are lucky enough to run into people who are better at executing than you are - then funding them seems like the smartest thing to do, should they want to work with you that is.

DuncanIdaho··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
Indeed - in relation to my other comment.

Since I do have (too many) ideas, but didn't like any of them enough to commit myself to it - the plan was to build a dream team (I have a knack for leading people - The Right Way(tm)) - and just practice execution until a killer idea in a good scalable market came along - and then run with it.

DuncanIdaho··on Consulting is like selling crack (go work for a startup)
That was my strategy exactly after quitting my former job (I was working as developer in a consulting company).

My plan was to start consulting on my own, get the deal flow running, bootstrap the consulting company and offload my work to the new guys with time. Then I would use the profits from the consulting company to fund my own startup(s) OR do some angel investing PG style.

But then while I have been slowly probing and negotiating some odd 7 gigs, on my third actual meeting I turned a potential customer into a co-founder and we're currently working on the project he wanted to hire me for.

By September we will see if the project takes off. If not - I will have spent my nest-egg by then, find a Job (for a year or so), save as much as I can and start out with the original plan again.

Why do I like this plan so much? For one I have similar view of capital as Niccollo Macchiavelli had of soldiers - I would rather fail with my own than succeed with borrowed money. The reason being that here in central Europe - typical "angel" investor expects a 50%+ share in your company for any money they commit. And if I wanted a boss I would keep my original job.

DuncanIdaho··on This is why I sell beer.

DuncanIdaho··on Chomsky on Intellectual Property
The fact that producing stuff is difficult is enough to create an opportunity. If you produce better stuff (price, quality, marketing) you get to sell more and earn more. This gives you an opportunity to invest more in to the system. So you get to be ahead of your competitors. And everybody gets to be ahead as side result with time as well, thus you need to keep investing and keep on trying.

The problem is that some industries feel entitled to retire on mohito island while humanity gets to drag them along.

Also most of people using and developing Linux live off it - one way or another. I'm certain that professional/user ratio is in strong favour of Linux.

Idea that companies put money into R&D solely due to intellectual property, or that they only make enough to put something into R&D because of IP is wrong.

Look at some of the most successful businesses in the world. Selling sugared water, selling grilled pieces of meat, selling washing machines and various appliances, selling pieces of wood that fit together,...

Taking whatever IP from them wouldn't change their R&D and other forward looking spending activities much.

And don't come back to me with low tech/high tech argument. High tech production is even harder, that's why those who know how to do it and keep successfully investing into getting beter, get to run the show. Those who don't know how to improve and those who want to collect tax on everybody forever should just roll over and die.

I find it quite surprising how little users pinboard actually got overall. But on the other hand - most of them are premium customers.

Maciej I'm curious is this endeavour profitable for you? I understand the point of an itch that needs to be scratched and all. But still I'm curious - I find the service excellent (I'm a devout customer) but for all the resource intensiveness that your service requires to offer caching and search and the time sunk into implementation and maintaining, well I find the fee kinda low (on a over thumb estimate that is).

Are there any other ways you are monetizing this? Since all those bookmarks are true "human powered search engine"?

DuncanIdaho··on Dealing with burn-out
My mother has borreliosis. She got ill 10 years before it was known to be a disease. She is also a workaholic and for 10 years she was told that she ain't nothing wrong with her and that she's lazy by her very own doctor. And her response was: "mr. Doctor, now that I know how laziness feels, I promise I won't ever call anybody lazy again."

It's a tangent I know, but look at your attitude. And I sure as hell hope you don't ever burn out to find out how it feels and for you to tell me how well are you able to work. I'd rather have you ignorant for the rest of your life.

Let me say this much it might not be as hard as stroke, but It sure as hell feels worse than losing motivation or getting bored.

DuncanIdaho··on Dealing with burn-out
Its easy for an able bodied person to call person in a wheelchair lazy.
DuncanIdaho··on Dealing with burn-out
Ahhh so only people who are single minded have the luxury to have their condition called burn out?

Have you been burned out? I have and I'm still recovering. And my condition ain't that bad either. But discord between what I have come to expect of myself and what others have become to rely on from me and the sad reality that mere thought of activities I used to excel in, make me physically sick.

First you get tired, then you stop enjoying your work, then slowly others change their opinion of you from being the coolest person you become a drag in their eyes. Then you loose job, then your spouse leaves you. And then the society calls you a looser.

Some people get lucky and see where it is going while in early stages. Others try to compensate and blow it.

And there's the third kind who yap about it while not having a slightest clue.

DuncanIdaho··on Dealing with burn-out
Why are you and iqster twisting words?

How is becoming incapable of doing what you trained your whole life for, due to too much of it not burnout? He even lists symptoms he experienced.

Jacques was lucky that he had funds to start something unrelated (like living his life) and productive, but he kept repeating that his business could suffer if he didn't have people who could take care of it (or whatever). The fact is that he couldn't bring himself to do what he was doing until that point of life to make a living.

What does define burnout then?

Correct me if I'm wrong - but with PhD's its the usual affair - softer the field, bigger the unemployment - meaning that there aren't nearly as many jobless PhD's in physics, medicine and chemistry as there are in economics, literature,...
