DrillShopper··on Updates to Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy
It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

The fact that there's no law mandating opt-in only for data retention consent (or any anti-consumer "feature") is maddening at times

DrillShopper··on How to slow down a program and why it can be useful
You can use the tc command from the netem package for those wondering how to achieve this on Linux. https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man8/tc-netem.8.html
DrillShopper··on What is going on right now?
I can barely get GitHub Copilot to output a functional 50 line program, let alone a 5 KLOC program that actually works.
DrillShopper··on What is going on right now?
I'm glad you asked! It's a complex and multifaceted issue.
DrillShopper··on What is going on right now?
Objectively is like literally - they both also mean their own opposites (subjectively and figuratively) due to how people actually use them in real life writing and communication as opposed to literature

Your use case is one that I have been gently leaning into for small projects at work and personal projects - the LLM is used to give me an initial ideal and code. In a sense, the LLM writes "the one I throw away", and by exploring the limitations of what it produces I both get a better idea of the problem domain and more confidence in actually implementing something useful.

I'll believe it when I see it with my own eyes, otherwise these words read more like sales copy than technological discovery.

DrillShopper··on NSA's Acting Director Tried to Save Top Scientist from Purge
What part of that bothers you? That there was an investigation or that it targeted Trump based on discovered evidence?
DrillShopper··on T-Mobile claimed selling location data without consent is legal–judges disagree
You're going to have to wait until Texas voters collectively grow the ability to reason and a backbone before you can toggle that option off (yes, I know it's not all of them but the fact that Abbot and company aren't metaphorically tarred and feathered then run out of town on a rail for even suggesting redistricting right now is telling)
DrillShopper··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
False equivalence - I don't see lefty culture warriors burning books/removing them from libraries.

They are fighting to get different books (less Eurocentric, for the most part) into the curriculum, but they're not removing them from the library.

DrillShopper··on H-1B Visa Changes Approved by White House
I've been a proponent of levying an excise tax on H1-B visas equal to the salary amount paid to the person on that visa (including benefits, if any).

If you really need the lower salary worker then sure, you can have them, but it will cost you.

I would also make the company sponsoring the H1-B visa responsible for all relocation costs when they fire someone on the visa.

DrillShopper··on Poorest US workers hit hardest by slowing wage growth
He's already weaponized the IRS, DOJ, and FTC, so there are a lot of ways he can fuck you for not bending the knee.

The new Confluence editor is tied with Word in how infuriating it is for me to put an image into a document and then move it.
DrillShopper··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
This is highly regional.

I live in the Midwest US. The city government sponsors floating (as in they move around, not that they're in water) beer gardens across public parks in the summer, and our local Lutheran and Catholic churches will run outdoor beer gardens and barbecues as a way to enjoy the nice weather and bring in a little money. The various state fairs also sell beer, and a local outdoor, public music festival goes through a staggering amount of alcohol consumed in public.

People are out in public, often with the authorities around, drinking beer and mixed drinks out of clear plastic cups (usually) and nobody cares. It's just a summer thing.

DrillShopper··on How did Facebook intercept competitor's encrypted mobile app traffic? (2024)
Because Facebook is key to their online surveillance, so Facebook making itself better is making itself more effective to the state surveillance apparatus
DrillShopper··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
I can't wait until the US government cuts Israel off from the weapons teet and tells them to fight their genocidal wars of aggression with their own money instead of the American taxpayer's money.
DrillShopper··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
You already do under the Israeli government - you're just living under the one you prefer.
DrillShopper··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
The only reason the Palestinians are considered "ethno-nationalist" is that they are opposing a facist, genocidal, actually ethno-nationalist state that has spread its propaganda that any disagreement on any grounds is anti-semitism.

It's ridiculous and I know the moment I see someone dig into their bag of slander with that they are not arguing in good faith.

JIDF out in force again.

Too bad Bitcoin is a piss poor medium of exchange unless you're ransoming personal data or stealing pensions from old ladies.

DrillShopper··on Local LLMs versus offline Wikipedia
Look at the British Post Office scandal - "the computer is always right".

Say what you will about a human, but unless you're a religious zealot or blind you generally don't believe the leader to be infallible. But through the magic of silicon you can shut people up more effectively.

This makes computers an accelerator of the problem, and therefore warrants caution any time their output may be relied upon for life and death decisions.

DrillShopper··on Local LLMs versus offline Wikipedia
> So how bad could it really get

I don't know. How about we ask some of the peoples who have been destroyed on the word of a single infallible malicious leader.

Oh wait, we can't. They're dead.

Any other questions?

DrillShopper··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I haven't changed jobs and I've had three different health insurance companies in as many years, all of which needed new prior auths for Trulicity/Mounjaro.
DrillShopper··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I wouldn't trust a compounding pharmacy with making this given some of the truly horrible horror stories I've heard, and I'm on it primarily for type 2 diabetes. This is the minimal dose that keeps my A1c and blood sugar where my internal medicine doctor wants them. The weight loss is a welcome side effect. That said, I have lost about 120 lbs in the last two years, so something I was doing before I got on Mounjaro was working. Mounjaro just helped make it consistent.

tbqh being extremely overweight sucks in a whole lot of ways. While the side effects sound miserable, they will only be temporary. The damage done to my body and metabolism as a result of being this heavy for this long piles up every day, so if I have to suffer like this then I'd rather do that than have a stroke and die in front of my family.

DrillShopper··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
It's typically a salad for lunch, usually lean protein over a complex carb for dinner (latest this week was slow cooked pulled chicken over brown rice), and typically a piece of fruit and a hard boiled egg for breakfast.

The hardest part about this diet for me has been finding sources of protein that get me at my goal with the small sizes of the meals I do eat.
