Drakar1903··on 1-on-1 meeting questions
I think the post above yours was an exaggeration for the purpose of illustrating a point.
Drakar1903··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
Anything close to an hour would have me thinking about moving closer.

On that note, I don't know if there's any research to it, but I feel like commute is an exponentially increasing nuisance. To illustrate: Moving from a 15 minutes commute to a 20 minutes commute will bring me less irritation than moving from a 55 minutes -> 60 minutes commute.

Drakar1903··on Reasons not to become famous
More actors start to talk about how the look in the movies is not fake as in CGI'd, but fake as in they don't look like this all the time.

Henry Cavill spoke up that his scenes for the Witcher had him drink IIRC only 2 liters of water over the 4 days before shooting.

Rob McElhenney spoke up how "easy" it is to have a Hollywood-tier body: https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a21285961/its-alway...

Drakar1903··on Reasons not to become famous
You can work hard at whatever makes you money, then convert that money into steroids.
Drakar1903··on Uber Announces Results for Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2019
You gotta pop the hood of your car and put them on whatever part of the engine is the warmest. There's probably optimization where you cook the fries as you drive.
Drakar1903··on Uber Announces Results for Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2019
>So they’re taking ~20% cut from every trip.

What I'm reading is I can order an Uber to two blocks away and say to the driver that I actually want to go to the other side of town, Uber says it's 50$ from which he'll get 40$, so how about I pay him 45$ in cash. We both win.

Only in the same way as when you can write down 10^20 as 10+10+10+10+10+...
Drakar1903··on Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-from-Home Experiment
Well, that's one job that's tough to do remote, isn't it?
Drakar1903··on Why Are Alphabet Letters Arranged How They Are?
So that singing the alphabet song we learned as a child is more melodic.
Drakar1903··on Tricks to start working despite not feeling like it
Well, if you're making "pots", you're not making "vases", "pans" or "thimbles". The experiment doesn't work if you don't set any acceptance criteria.
Drakar1903··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
The other issue is uncertainty - you have no idea how much you will earn on a given day or if this will be the day your car finally hits one pothole too many and dies.
Drakar1903··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
I see a kind of future where restaurants are reduced to a kitchen and packing area, with no seats. Then several kitchens bunched together to save on rent and utilities. Then cut out the drivers with air or land based drones. Then start lobbying so that the drones can move underground, and new buildings have to include a drone delivery vent / conveyor belt.

You already can live your whole life and never leave a house, working remote or playing the stock market, having everything delivered. It's grim. And it's coming.

Drakar1903··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
You could book an Uber to two streets away and tell the driver that you actually want to go to somewhere else, and you'll pay the guy under the table. Bet they won't mind that.
Drakar1903··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
If you only have a front door exit, then column-by-column would work for the first column, but then it would switch to row-by-row starting from the back, since the column moves forward, and that allows the last row people to join the end of the column first.

If you have front and back door exits, the same would happen, but row-by-row would start from the middle of the plane.

Drakar1903··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
Multiply that 3 minutes by however many passengers are on the plane and you're saving days of human existence.
Drakar1903··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
I think it's an expansion on Matrix's blue pill red pill analogy, except black seems an even more forceful and grim color than red.
Drakar1903··on It is perfectly OK to only code at work, you can have a life too
>Why should I spend my free time to be a better wageslave?

Because if they lead to a higher salary and you can keep your spending habits the same, you have an option of having a stronger safety net, an option to retire at 45 instead of 65, an option to see Java the island and not only Java the programming language.

Drakar1903··on Anti-patterns and malpractices in modern software development (2015)
Unless you plan to work at the certain job until you retire, you gotta think about your resume. You don't want to be the guy looking for jobs with Visual Basic and Excel macros experience.
Drakar1903··on One-quarter of the world’s pigs died in a year due to swine fever in China
Feels like every generation needs to perform its coup. Once upon a time you could set your clock to whether there was a revolt going on in places like Spain or Turkey.
Drakar1903··on Kotlin vs. Java
I wonder why people don't frame Kotlin as the middleman that takes the good parts of both Java and Scala.
Drakar1903··on Spain planning on going ahead with ‘Google tax’ despite US tariff threats
Which works because of strong position of unions. The minimum wage issue can't be simplified to "no minimum wage and yet they thrive"
