DougEiffel··on History is just one damn thing after another
Perhaps a map of the world with a timeline slider at the bottom. The map would need clickable bubbles which are larger or smaller relative to the significance of the event.

Zoom out for a smaller number of more significant global events. Zoom in and, like Google maps does with cities, show an increasing number of less significant events local to the zoomed in area.

For example, zoomed out in 1692, we see a slave revolt in Barbados, a large bubble for Europe's ongoing Nine-Years' War, and the Salem Witch Trials.

Zoom in on Salem and see little bubbles appearing with specific witch trials.

Now, to truly bring home your idea, add weighted dotted lines between events. The strength of the relationship between events would influence the weight and opacity of the dotted lines between events.

I'm a big proponent of this method. I do the same thing several times each winter in my car using an empty parking lot.

Practice feeling comfortable sliding and recovering so you don't have a bad reflex and overcorrect. Absolutely saved my ass one time a few years ago driving home from work.

I was on a 55 and the roads were dry and clear. I came around a slight curve that runs next to some woods and hit black ice immediately. I lightly tapped the gas and tokyo-drifted back to the center of the lane. Felt just like what I had practiced and I felt calm while doing it. Had I panicked and slammed on the brakes, I would have gone sideways into the woods at 55.

Nevermind the risk of a student stealing the gun from the armed guard, or the risk of the armed guard going through a rough divorce and deciding to go postal themselves.

The latter really scares me as a teacher. Imagine what the security guy could do with some planning time and full access to all locked doors as well as the camera and alarm systems.

DougEiffel··on I still think it's unlikely we're observing alien aircraft
I desperately hope you're right. I would love for their to be aliens (who aren't immediately trying to wipe us out).

I suspect that you're wrong though. And when I dig through your comment history, I see a bright, well-spoken individual in the grips of conspiracy and mysticism.

The UAP/UFO phenomenon is always "for real this time!" Even now, the people testifying to Congress are not providing evidence or even giving firsthand accounts - they are playing a game of "someone said" and giving second or even third-hand accounts of aliens.

Those who make the assertions must provide high-quality evidence. Please show me high-quality photo/video, or several world-renowned scientists who will attest to the definite existence of alien visitors. Conspiracies of this magnitude cannot be kept secret for long.

Finally, your comment on a previous post about reverse engineering leading to the invention of circuits and transistors tells a lot about your bias. These inventions and the slow, iterative processes behind their creation are some of the most well-documented events in history. We have engineers, corporate documentation, peer-reviewed studies, blueprints, and the physical objects themselves. All of these things show precisely how we went from crude prototypes to complex feats of engineering - one small step at a time. There never was a sudden and unexpected explosion of technology which was completely alien to what had come before it.

DougEiffel··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
This is a pretty cynical take on the issue.

There are definitely power-trippers who are attracted to these roles. But there are also people who just want to facilitate a nice community and enjoy their little corner of the internet while making it enjoyable for others.

I think people who accuse mods of "just being on a power-trip" are the same people who get mad when their HOA tells them they have to trim the hedges so their neighbor can back out of their driveway safely.

It's myopic and doesn't give mods credit for seeing the bigger picture. This website, for example, is heavily moderated to keep protecting the feeling of "Reddit in the early days." If the mods here weren't on top of that, this place would be overrun by the type of stuff that is now on Reddit's front page.

DougEiffel··on I still think it's unlikely we're observing alien aircraft
The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan lays bare the naive optimism and ignorance behind belief in alien UFOs.

Aliens would be the greatest discovery in man's history. There would simply be no way to suppress it. If they can indeed be captured on cameras and sensors, the sheer number of cameras and sensors in the world for the last few decades would guarantee several high definition videos and measurements with no other rational explanation. The greatest minds in science would be clambering over each other to study them.

Sagan also goes to great lengths to explain that there would be very little chance of aliens appearing or behaving the way they purportedly do. For example, they would certainly not fly almost exclusively over North America. The aliens are also not likely to change with the times, as is suggested by the fact that UFO conspiracy theories often follow patterns that change every few years or so. Alien sightings used to be green men in flying saucers, then they left crop circles, now they are little pill-shaped objects.

In short, we lack any evidence at all, many who claim to see them later recant or admit to being charlatans, and the descriptions of aliens are rather unimaginative when compared to the actual possibilities of how alien life may look or behave.

DougEiffel··on The Kentucky Derby is decadent and depraved (1970) [pdf]
Jon Ronson has written several incredible books that all qualify as Gonzo Journalism. The only one I didn't like very much was the one about the adult film industry.

The Psychopath Test So You've Been Publicly Shamed Them: Adventures with Extremists

All great books and even better audiobooks that you'll like I think.

Super easy. I took Imodium for a couple of days at the 3 month mark for some very minor digestive symptoms.

The "worst" part of quitting Sublocade so far was the one day, also around 3 months, when I felt a little tired and my emotions came back. I felt like I had the most mild cold ever, but what bothered me was the intense fear that I was about to go into legitimate withdrawal.

8 hours later I felt fine and have felt fine since.

Congrats on making it through and getting the injection. I did Suboxone for a couple years, the Sublocade injection for a few more, and then I stopped my Sublocade ~5 months ago.

My total clean time is almost 7 years now. I wish more people knew about Sublocade and Buvidal. I always tell people that opioid addiction pretty much has a cure these days but they are so hesitant to start the injections because they never heard of it.

My wife doesn't like video games. if I sat her down to play Obra Dinn, she would hate video games forever with no hope of reform.

Obra Dinn was an incredible work of art, but it's not accessible by any definition of the word. I don't think anyone would enjoy it if they weren't already deeply in love with video games and puzzles.

The Outer Wilds (not worlds) is another one that I think rivals Obra Dinn, and is more accessible. It might be the best narrative-focused puzzle game ever made.

DougEiffel··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
I think maybe it depends how you define shit posting. If you mean trolling or posting extremely negative and low-effort content, then I suppose I agree with you about it being toxic.

But if shitposting is just off-color jokes or talking about topics you might want to keep private, I don't see that as a problem. I think a lot of great internet content wouldn't exist without some form of anonymity. I certainly wouldn't share genuine insights into my job without anonymity. People wouldn't share sexual content or secrets. Many people wouldn't share anything at all no matter how tame or appropriate. My wife over thinks when she writes and is always afraid she isn't wording things well. She posts absolutely nothing outside of Reddit.

Reminds me of (and may be related to) hybristophilia - when a person has a sexual interest in those who commit heinous crimes.

The Wikipedia page for this phenomenon is pretty interesting. Particularly the "causes" and "history" sections.
