DoctorOW··on Goodbye InnerHTML, Hello SetHTML: Stronger XSS Protection in Firefox 148
They do link the default configuration for "safe": https://wicg.github.io/sanitizer-api/#built-in-safe-default-...

But I agree, my default approach has usually been to only use innerText if it has untrusted content:

So if their demo is this:

    container.SetHTML(`<h1>Hello, {name}</h1>`);
Mine would be:

    let greetingHeader = container.CreateElement("h1");
    greetingHeader.innerText = `Hello, {name}`;
DoctorOW··on Be wary of Bluesky
> That's the same argument people made about Twitter. "If it goes bad, we'll just leave." We know how that played out.

But they migrated to Bluesky, right? So it played out fine?

DoctorOW··on Old School Visual Effects: The Cloud Tank (2010)
Apparently thinking One Battle After Another (2025) is "without a doubt THE most insufferable movie of the year" (<https://singlemindedmovieblog.blogspot.com/2026/01/bottom-10...>)
DoctorOW··on In Search of a Discord Replacement
I use Android so that's the only thing I actually used. I falsely assumed iOS was in a similar place.
DoctorOW··on In Search of a Discord Replacement
Small correction, Stoat does have a usable native mobile app:

- Android: https://github.com/stoatchat/for-android

- iOS: https://github.com/stoatchat/for-ios

DoctorOW··on Archive.today is directing a DDoS attack against my blog
If you don't like Archive.org use something else, there's plenty of ways to archive something. I think the idea that the world's most powerful organizations are trying and failing to pursue this makes "Should we shut it down?" all the more ludicrous a question.
DoctorOW··on Archive.today is directing a DDoS attack against my blog
> Do we want archive.today taken down over this?

I don't think that's on the table. I would say use this as your incentive to support archive.org, who has proven much more accountable. Archive.Today is weaponizing their traffic, and reducing traffic is the best way to deal with it. Vote with your feet.

DoctorOW··on Why Go is not my favourite language
I'm going to be honest, I always felt like the verbosity was the point of Go. Iirc the whole reason it was invented was to let codebases be as readable as they are writable even for less experienced developers. Why are there Error types when exceptions exist? To force you to acknowledge the possibility for errors. You can easily let your frameworks and libraries handle recovering from panics, but err is unavoidable. You have to, at the very least, put the _.
DoctorOW··on The Dallas Morning News Is Hiring a Faith Reporter
> Perhaps the poster's curiosity is "Why is the Dallas Morning News hiring a faith reporter?"

Indeed, thank you.

DoctorOW··on Jellyfin LLM/"AI" Development Policy
The root of the issue is "ChatGPT people" are using artificial intelligence to replace... intelligence. Nobody, not even ChatGPT people, wants to actually read that drivel.
DoctorOW··on The bachelor tax – what it costs in taxes to be single
If it helps you in talking yourself down from domestic terrorism, IRS is just law enforcement. Killing IRS agents won't lower your taxes, in the same way killing police officers won't legalize anything.
DoctorOW··on I Like GitLab
> consider Hey, Basecamp, Shopify

Basecamp is slow as hell, Shopify depends on some insanely specific tuning, and I don't use Hey but it's the same team as Basecamp IIRC.

DoctorOW··on Proof of Corn
Why do I need to help? Is this an experiment to see if it can do it on its own, or just another "project" where they give AI credit for human's work for marketing purposes?
DoctorOW··on Cows can use sophisticated tools
I knew it.
DoctorOW··on OpenAI could reportedly run out of cash by mid-2027
I read somewhere (404 media? ) that they spent more on AWS than they got in revenue for 2025.
DoctorOW··on PCs refuse to shut down after Microsoft patch
Never in my life have I heard of this security issue.
DoctorOW··on Minnesota is under siege. This cannot stand
I think Obama administration waasn't perfect, but I think it was the right move to focus on the citzenship status for deportations rather than racial background. I think if Obama had the Tea party protestors declared "illegals" and authorized lethal force against anyone who disagreed, it'd negatively affect his media coverage.
DoctorOW··on Minnesota is under siege. This cannot stand
The problem I've found is coordinating. The idea that we need a sizable chunk of the country to all work together in leaderless organization, is noble but lofty. Every attempt I've ever seen is something extremely easy for the feds to disrupt like a Facebook, Reddit, or Discord group, where everyone collectively bikesheds and no decisions get made.

DoctorOW··on Is Rust faster than C?
> we can say that a fast language is the one where an average programmer is most likely to produce fast code with a given budget

I'd say most people use this definition, with the caveat that there's no official "average programmer", and everyone has different standards.

DoctorOW··on Apple Creator Studio
A lot of those are paid extras. I know my Adobe CC didn't come with any stock credits.
DoctorOW··on The Inevitable Rise of the Art TV
I worked at a TV station that would use these for monitor walls (more for the anti-glare than anything else). I remember seeing paintings on set being a sign something went terribly wrong.
DoctorOW··on U.S. Emissions Jumped in 2025 as Coal Power Rebounded
That's the exact reason it's being subsidized with tax dollars, to try and keep it competitive with other energy sources.
DoctorOW··on The chess bot on Delta Air Lines will destroy you (2024) [video]
They're probably using an OSS chess engine in something like C++, but using HTML/CSS/JS for the interface. 90% moves could be represented by a chess board as a 2D array, checking the engine accepts it as a valid move, and then replacing what's on that square be it empty space or a now captured piece. Castling, pawn promotion, and en passant are the edge cases with en passant being the most obscure.
DoctorOW··on Show HN: Geoguess Lite – open-source, subscription free GeoGuessr alternative
AWS Lambda and Firebase are both notoriously expensive ways to host APIs. I would really push you to look at those as your next targets for sustainability focused cost cutting.
DoctorOW··on Why Are Grok and X Still Available in App Stores?
Why hasn't that worked for Tumblr?
DoctorOW··on Gmail is entering the Gemini Era
You're absolutely right! I'll put this at the top of the inbox.
DoctorOW··on FFmpeg Thanks to TencentGlobal
In case you missed the reply from Tenecent:

> Following an internal review, we’d like to correct the performance data mentioned earlier: the actual improvement is approximately 2x, not 5x. We value accuracy and appreciate the chance to provide this clarification.

DoctorOW··on The creator of Claude Code's Claude setup
> I predict that the commercial market for a lot of software will evaporate

Counterpoint: Windows, Oracle DB, etc. have had free/cheaper alternatives for decades and still thrived.

DoctorOW··on Show HN: TCP chat server written in C# and .NET 9, used in the terminal
For what it's worth the HN algorithm is a pretty complex, so I'm still oversimplifying but ti's more about the rate a story gains score than the points themselves. You can get just 5 votes in the first minute you're up and make the front page, which is more or less what this did.
