Dnguyen··on Fake Dog for Home Security
We installed X-10 barking dog modules 20 years ago. https://www.powerhouse.eu/en/home-security/46-x10-dk10-barki...
Dnguyen··on HN is up again
I see what you did there! haha
Dnguyen··on Show HN: EdgeDB 1.0
How do we migrate from existing Postgres database to EdgeDB? Can traditional app still access all the relational as before and new app access via EdgeDB? We're making use of existing environment and extending it with our own frontend. I would like to understand how I can mix legacy and new code.
Dnguyen··on Launch HN: Joon (YC W22) – A mobile game that teaches kids to build good habits
How is this compare to ChoreMonster? They were hot for a while and don't hear about them anymore.
Dnguyen··on A visual C4 model tool for your team
What is the diagram framework being used?
Dnguyen··on JamRTC – WebRTC for Live Musicians
I worked on a project similar when the pandemic started last year. Ran into latency problem and just couldn't find a way around it. Add to the latency issue is also the global metronome as well.
Dnguyen··on Power Automation is now free for all Windows 10 users
How does this compares to AutoHotKey?
Dnguyen··on Launch HN: Airbyte (YC W20) – Open-Source ELT (Fivetran/Stitch Alternative)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Airbyte is mainly an EL to be used with other schedulers? The scheduler will have to provide, internally or externally, the logic and parameters to the nodes that drive Airbyte connectors?
Dnguyen··on Launch HN: Airbyte (YC W20) – Open-Source ELT (Fivetran/Stitch Alternative)
I do a lot of ETL over the years and watched the video and read the intro. I apologize but I haven't a chance to read through the full documentation. My question is, a lot of data I pull are relational and hierarchical, how would I pass variables along to related connectors? And is there a way to wait for a parent connection to finish before the child connector runs? I've build many ETL over the years and it's not easy to keep up with the changes. The bottleneck was always the engineering adapting to the changing schema.
Dnguyen··on Mysterious helicopters have been circling Los Angeles
There are reports of a person flying around LA airspace with a jet pack. Maybe that's why the helicopter is there, to catch that person?
Dnguyen··on Show HN: Amplication – Instantly Generate Node.js Apps with GraphQL and REST API
Looks interesting. I've used similar setup but with Hasura. My current project needs to interface with a 3rd party REST API on top of Postgres. I was able to replaced many of the CRUD REST API with Postgraphile. To bring it all under one GraphQL endpoint I used Apollo Federation. When I have time I'll have to see how Amplication federate the various data sources.
Dnguyen··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
I was working on a music system for my brother, who is a music teacher, to allow for better music teaching than Zoom. I just don't have the bandwidth. But I do have some code for video interface with Jitsi and MIDI. I'd be more than happy to pass along with I got and some idea on how to get the music to synch.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: Were you in the early 2000s HTPC scene?
I built HTPC using ShuttlePC with MythTV back then. I also integrated home automation to control the lights and audio distribution around the house using X-10. Back then, the phone were still analog and one of the X-10 light module would turns on when I get a call. I had a Sony projector with a 105 in screen and 5.1 surround sound. When the movie starts the lights would dim and the curtains would close. Getting a cable card was expensive back then. I had DirecTV so set up an IR relay with X-10 to control the channels. Torn out the walls to run all the wires and consolidated everything in a closet. It was a sweet set up. Good times.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: Do I need to register a lot of redundant domains?
I think you should focus on making your product as the best instead of worrying about other people leeching off your domain name. If you get that far, you must be doing very well so no need to worry about leechers.
Dnguyen··on Launch HN: Visual One (YC W20) – Event recognition for security cameras
Very similar to Arcules (arcules.com), which is a start up backed by Canon.
Dnguyen··on Where Have You Gone, Peter Norton? (2014)
Great Scott! I was there! Good times.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: I need ideas to impress fifth graders with technology
My son is 9 and in 4th grade. I got him this https://kano.me/store/us/products/coding-wand and he loves playing and coding it. If you think your audience is into Harry Potter, give this a try. It's like magic!
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: Personal photo library recommendations? Open source, browser-based
I used https://galleryserverpro.com/ many years back. It was one of the better ones back then. I switched to Amazon Photo as I didn't want to deal with another server and backing up my precious family photos. Looks like it's open sourced now, which is even better, if you don't mind .Net and SQL Server.
Dnguyen··on Show HN: Simple but Powerful IDE for Databases
I've been using Toad for a long time and looking for something better, less buggy, more performant. Watching the video this looks very promising. Looking at the limitation of the Free version, it's too limiting to really give it a try. For example, only one connection at a time, limit to two tabs, no data import and export, clipboard size limit. I need to see how it handles my everyday usage before I can determine if I want to switch.
Dnguyen··on HeidiSQL – GUI client for MariaDB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL
I use pgModeler for Postgres. Although lately I've been using Valentina Studio and it has a decent schema modeler too.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: How can I make the most out of high school?
With most things in life, you get out what you put in. I remembered it was awkward for me, but I made efforts to hang out with friends. A lot of my friends didn't have the same interest as me at first, but there's always something in common that we share, may it be sports or food or movies or just plain hanging out. As you already know, friendship needs cultivating. Just like building a relationship. So, go have fun! Keep an open mind and hang out with people, you'll learn interesting things about them and build a long lasting friendship bond.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: Document management
Something like Wikipedia?
Dnguyen··on Helm: Personal Email Server
I like the idea. But can it handle multiple domains? Also, if I put one in my brother's house, can it connect the two and use them as fail over? That will eliminate my worry about outage and backups.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: Recommendations of good cybercrime novels?
Darknet by Matthew Mather About an AI entity taking over the financial market and buying its way into the political system.
Dnguyen··on Why Stellar could be the next big ICO platform
FYI: the symbol for Stella Lumen is called XLM, not XLR as stated in the article.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
Here's my two cents, hopefully I can make a dollar back. I've been working on an web app to let small businesses create/design logos. My idea is to build a bot that translate requests in natural language to actions. For example, enlarge the icon by 5 percent. Or move the text a little to the left. Basically I want to cut down the time and cost of making minor changes that clients go through with designers over emails. Good match for your #4.
Dnguyen··on Ask HN: A good primer on cryptocurrencies?
Khanh Academy has a very good course https://www.khanacademy.org/economics-finance-domain/core-fi...
Dnguyen··on Show HN: GreenPiThumb – A Raspberry Pi Gardening Bot
I like the scale idea! But as the plant grows, you would need to adjust.
Dnguyen··on Agens Graph – PostgreSQL Based Graph Database
There's also https://github.com/postgraphql/postgraphql
Dnguyen··on SQL Notebook
In my daily work I often have the need to analyze excel and csv files from clients. I use http://harelba.github.io/q/ and it worked most of the time. But this one seems promising. Especially being able to query data from a file and join with data from a database.
