If you built good useful infrastructure people are more likely to want to keep it, use it and defend it.

The UK didn't build good infrastructure to capitalize on the cyclist interest so could not ride the positive wave of a new status quo bias.

Nothing they said dismisses academia as an ivory tower anymore than anyone pointing out how ridiculously pervasive the replication crisis is dismisses academia or ad hominems leftism as untrustworthy.

There is no need to be defensive when how perverse the incentive structure for academia is, is pointed out. You can be a diehard leftist and also hate the present day institutions of academia.

DirkH··on What is the origin of the lake tank image that has become a meme? (2021)
I believe the meme format typically involves asking the tank questions as if it were a great sage with wisdom to impart.

So it has to so with the lady of the lake because not only is there a body of water but in both cases there is a role for paying deference to the entity in the water (Lady or tank).

Nobody needs an Aston Martin to perform well enough at their job. I've been in multiple situations where being a Linux user put me at a disadvantage because everything else at a company assumes Apple.

Granted, the appropriate response is to demand a Mac from this company, but it still highlights that a Mac isn't a luxury item the same way an Aston Martin is

DirkH··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
Perhaps we support the ban because we saw first hand the damage it can cause to others and ourselves.

I would have supported a ban when I was in highschool. I think a lot of teenagers would have.

Also I don't understand how a ban is punishing the victim anymore than banning drugs from high-schools is punishing any teenagers.

DirkH··on The Onion buys Infowars
I mean, iirc the Germans were buying guns to fight Actual Communism and other far-left boogiemen they perceived to have infiltrated their political system.

The road from there to Actual Fascism was enabled and supported by a diverse working class coalition who was fed up with the status quo and in a dire economic situation.

No, it is similar. I think the analogy is that you being the horse and AI being cars. You are to upcoming AI what a horse was to cars.

I'm convinced what we are witnessing is that there are genius level engineers (lots of them) that are and many have always been sub-par communicators. I think being a good communicator tracks really well with how much someone can get out of LLMs (as does engineering competency. You need both).

Great but not genius engineers who are also great communicators may broadly outperform people with only technical genius soon, but that's speculation on my part.

DirkH··on Wikipedia article blocked worldwide by Delhi high court
You know, given this is the third time I have read this exact text block I have:

a) increased my credence that this is a bot b) increased my credence that you're spreading ideological bs claims not worth investigating further, despite being initially curious to learn more the first time I read this

Copy pasting a comment everywhere not a good look IMO. It shows a general lack of engaging with fellow humans in dialogue and makes you look like you might just be spreading something trying to reach as many eyes as possible because you're being paid to do so.

Can someone smarter than me explain to me why we haven't moved away from email yet, or why there hasn't been a move away from it? I don't understand why we don't have some opt-in infrastructure replacing emails. E.g. you get a message from a company and before they can send you anything else you need to opt-in to receive messages from them.

Why isn't there something like a "Proof of human" protocol where when you sign up you verify yourself with government ID (same as you do for banks) and then from this you can produce infinite unique ids for authentication to websites instead of emails. Your identity is unknown where you sign up, but wherever your ID is used it is known that it is a human being.

>80% of all emails are used for nowadays seems to just be to have a unique ID in a database for a user that can also be used to contact said user. You could have some protocol where the unique ID can be used to initiate a chat with someone, but they won't receive it unless they opt-in.

The incentives for ad companies would even align with this since what company doesn't want exclusively "proven human" users they try to send ads to.

DirkH··on Is population density the reason Americans can't discuss politics?
I think Americans have lost hope as well. I think in America it isn't hope for a better tomorrow that is driving politics anymore, it is fear for a worse tomorrow.

I don't know how things are in India, but I imagine people have lost hope that politics will actually impact their lives in ways they wish, but they probably aren't as fear-driven as Americans (yet). And this explains why you can discuss politics with someone you disagree with - because you aren't scared of what the party of someone with opposing views will do (yet).

DirkH··on Is population density the reason Americans can't discuss politics?
Isn't this better explained by the US's atrocious two-party system that has over the years hyper-polarized politics (multiplied 10x further by social media?)? I can remember 10 years ago it was much easier to discuss controversial politics with a stranger in person that you disagreed with. What I am saying is the situation right now in India insofar as discussing politics with anyone comfortably used to exist in America a decade ago.

India doesn't have a 2 party system (I don't think?). If you look at the seats in parliament there is much more of a rainbow which suggests it is more democratic than the US. Maybe it will eventually evolve into a 2 party equilibrium as more people vote only for bigger parties they think stand a chance, rather than for ones they actually believe in (practically mathematically guaranteed to happen if India's political system has no defence against the spoiler effect). But that shift will take time. If I am right India will eventually be hyper-polarized like the US after it "2-party-crystallizes."

If there were only 2 viable political parties in India right now where votes were split near 50-50 each election cycle and each party viewed the other as a huge threat and amplified how terrible the other is on social media 24/7 I think we'd see cultural norms shift in India and people would start to become more quiet on politics. Population density I don't think would be that key a factor.

Likewise, if the US had multiple political parties all represented in parliament and there just wouldn't be as much political hyper-polarization and without 2 parties tribalistically fighting winner-takes-all style it is much easier to have cultural norms that you can talk controversial political stuff

DirkH··on It's Time to Stop Taking Sam Altman at His Word
Strong agree and strong upvote.

An intuition pump is to think of a religious zealot that has a drastically different worldview and aims and drives from you that seem completely nonsensical (e.g. perhaps not caring about wealth accumulation at all - even for stability - and only about perpetuating God's glory).

Sam is no religious zealot, but the difference in the life game he is playing and the life game most of us are playing is as vast as that between us and the zealot.

DirkH··on AI agent promotes itself to sysadmin, trashes boot sequence
I think you are confusing intelligence with consciousness. They're orthogonal.

Otherwise I do not know what definition of intelligence you are using. For me I just use wiki's: "Intelligence can be described as the ability to perceive or infer information; and to retain it as knowledge to be applied to adaptive behaviors within an environment or context."

Nothing in that definition disallows a system from being "pure mechanism" and also being intelligent. An mp3 player isn't intelligent because - unlike AI - it isn't taking in information to retain it as knowledge to be applied to adaptive behaviors within an environment or context.

An mp3 player that learns my preferences over time and knows exactly when to say hi and how based on contextual cues is displaying intelligence. But I would be mistaken for thinking that it doing so means it is also conscious.

DirkH··on AI agent promotes itself to sysadmin, trashes boot sequence
If statistically companies are making more money in the long run giving more control to AI... that is exactly what they will do it - and it will be rational for companies to do that. And the people not doing it will be labeled unmodern, falling behind, losing profits etc etc.

Me daydreaming about a future Cloudstrike caused by AI:

```
Why did this happen? You've cost our company millions with your AI service that we bought from you!
Err... dunno... not even the people who made the AI know. We will pay you your losses and then we can just move on?
No, we will stop using AI entirely after this!
No you wont. That will make you uncompetitive in the market and your whole business will lag behind and fail. You need AI.
We will only accept an AI model where we understand why it does what it does and it never makes a mistake like this again.
Unfortunately, that is a unicorn. Everyone just kinda accepts that this all-powerful thing we use for everything we kinda just don't fully understand. The positives far outweigh the few catastrophes like this though! It is a gamble we all take. You'd be a moron running a company destined to fail if you don't just have faith it'll mostly be ok like the rest of our customers!
*Groan* ok
```

DirkH··on AI agent promotes itself to sysadmin, trashes boot sequence
Always seems to me that the goalposts keep moving as capabilities of AI improves.

I swear to God we could have AGI+robotics capable of doing anything a human can do (but better) and we'll still - as a species - have multi-hour podcasts pondering and mostly concluding "yea, impressive, but they're not really intelligent. That's not what intelligence actually is."

DirkH··on AI agent promotes itself to sysadmin, trashes boot sequence
Looks pretty easy to find tons of examples of agentic AI engineer projects online:

- https://github.com/Pythagora-io/gpt-pilot - https://github.com/smol-ai/developer - https://github.com/stitionai/devika

If you want to just make games there's Rosebud AI

I cannot speak for the quality of any of these projects though

DirkH··on TSMC execs allegedly dismissed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as 'podcasting bro'
This analogy breaks down when you consider what "attention is all you need" did for us.

A mere 5 years ago I was firmly on the camp (alongside linguists mainly) that believed intelligence requires more than just lots of data and a next token predictor. I was clearly wrong and would have lost a $1000 bet it I had put my money where my mouth was back then. Anyone not noticing how far things have come I think are mostly moving goalposts and falling to hindsight bias.

A better analogy is that the genius person in the village built a step ladder made of carbon nanotubules. Some people proclaimed "All with have to do is keep going and we can reach the moon with a very tall ladder!' Other people - many quite smart - proclaimed reasonably: "This is impossible. You are not realizing the unique challenges and materials we have not yet researched we need to build something like that."

Some in society kept building. The ladder kept getting higher. They run into issues like oxygen and balance so the ladder is redesigned into an elevator. Challenges came and were thought insurmountable until redesigns were still found to work with the miraculous carbon nanotubule material which seemed like a panacea for every construction ill.

Regardless of how high the now elevator gets and regardless of how many times the elevator gets higher than what the naysayers firmly believed is impossible the same naysayers keep saying they will never get much higher.

And higher the elevator grows.

Eventually a limit is reached, but that limit ends up being far higher than any naysayers ever thought possible. And when the limit is reached the naysayers all gathered and said "told you this would be the limit and that it was impossible!'

The naysayers failed to see the carbon nanotubules for the revolutionary potential that it had, even if they were correct that it wasn't enough.

And little did everyone know that their society was mere months ago from another genius being born that would give them another catalyst on the order of carbon nano tubules that would again lead to dramatic unexpected and long-term gains to how high the elevator can grow.
