Digit-Al··on Study: Social media probably can't be fixed
What you're link refers to seems to be a different way to get to the feed that has been around for ages. The feed I described has been around for over a year (I can't remember when I first found out about it, but it was a long time ago).

[Edit] it looks like it was initially introduced three years ago: https://about.fb.com/news/2022/07/home-and-feeds-on-facebook...

>Facebook could provide you options to only see friend's content. People have certainly asked for it. They absolutely refuse to.

What are you talking about? On the app, click on the burger menu and select feeds. You will then have a page with get feeds. Song the top you will see "Friends". Select that to see only stuff your friends have posted.

Facebook has loads of options to curate your feed. Lots of people are too lazy or stupid to find them.

Digit-Al··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
I'm a meat eater, but don't eat much red meat as I have mild arthritis and too much red meat causes me to get flare ups. I tried one of those burgers a few years ago (can't remember if it was Beyond or Impossible now) and didn't like it. The taste and texture had a bit of an uncanny valley vibe as they were sort of almost there, but not quite the same. The taste was a bit odd and then I was left with a pea protein after-taste for hours, which was not pleasant at all.

Here in the UK we have something called Direct Debit, that is backed by the Direct Debit guarantee. All regular payments are made by DD and we can cancel a regular payment at any time just by contacting our bank. I can go into my banking app, review a list of all DD payments, and cancel any of them with just the press of a button. You should campaign to have that system in America.

I often find it strange that a country that is so advanced in many ways is so backwards when it comes to banking.

> On top of that, salaries for basic jobs would need to get much higher to incentivize people to work.

Not true. The 'B' in UBI means 'Basic'. UBI wil pay your rent, utilities, and food, but not much else. Now, there are some people that are willing to just exist on only the bare minimum, but that's a significant minority. The vast majority of people want more. There will be plenty of people willing to do minimum wage jobs to top-up their UBI so they can afford extras like holidays, nicer phones, meals out, etc...

The main difference would be that the security of UBI would give them more power to distch a job if they were being abused in some way, rather than being so desperate that even if their employer is abusing them they are forced to take it because they need the job to survive.

I feel like too much discussion on UBI is poisoned by the idea that the vast majority of people are bone idle and are willing to just sit at home doing nothing and just existing with the bare minumum required to live. It's just not true

Digit-Al··on Buying a Robot Cat and Falling into the Weird World of Animal-Robot Research
Wouldn't it be likely that smell has something to do with why animals don't treat robots as animals? After all, lots of animals use scent to some degree to help identify each other. A robot won't smell like anything they recognise - either friend or foe - so they would likely ignore it.
Digit-Al··on The Decline of Usability: Revisited (2023)
Even worse, in my opinion, is when you're typing away and a dialog from some other application suddenly decides to pop up and swallow all your key strokes; or, in the worst case, one of your key strokes just happens to coincide with a shortcut key on the intruding dialog so you accidentally accept something without having a clue what the dialog was and what you accidentally accepted.

OS should prevent any dialog from a background application from coming to the foreground of it detected that use is in the process of typing. It's not that difficult of a task after all.

I remember many (many) years ago I used to frequent a small independent video rental shop. Then, one day a Blockbuster opened next door (and when I say next door, I do mean literally next door) offering a larger range of videos to rent and much cheaper prices. Within about three months the independent had gone out of business and shut down, at which point the Blockbuster jacked their prices up to what the independent had been charging.

It was incredibly blatant and I felt sorry for the poor guy that had been running the independent business.

Digit-Al··on Microsoft is now 50 years old
It's sad the direction they've ended up going. Microsoft were always a rapacious company bent on market dominance, but at least they used to be focused partially on trying to achieve that by creating very user focused software; which included large amounts of user testing and tuning every shortcut and icon for the best experience for the most users. Now they just seem to be intent on forcing user login, ads, and ai on users whether they want it or not, and generally degrading the whole user experience with no care.

Digit-Al··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
My comments above are based on precedence when sites like Facebook added these clauses and people got all panicked thinking the company was going to start selling their content (rather than selling their souls /s). The mundane truth was that they needed the wording to make sure they were legally given the right to publish the content onto the web in the way they did. So people were assuming nefarious reasons when they were just legally protecting themselves.

Now, it does seem strange that Mozilla have suddenly added this when they haven't had it previously. Personally, I deem it highly unlikely that they are planning on monetizing our content in some way; whilst they have made some strange decisions sometimes I don't think they are completely stupid. Mozilla is in a precarious position right now, they are only managing to scape by on user trust and if that disappears they are finished. I'd like to think they are not foolish enough to do something that would catastrophically erode that trust, and selling user data to advertisers would kill them.

Having thought about it a bit more now, I have to wonder if they have dreamt up some other mad scheme, like Mozilla Cloud Storage, or something that would require such wording in the terms. Hopefully, it's just a wording update to protect themselves. I guess we will find out in due course.

[edit: fixed a typo.]

Digit-Al··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
I have seen discussions of this sort of wording so many times over the years. My understanding is as follows (and I could be wrong, but this is my understanding of why that wording is used). If you use Firefox to upload a file to a website then, legally speaking, the browser is acting as a "publisher"of that file. Because of Draconian laws in many countries, to publish a file you have to have a legal right to the file, therefore Mozilla have to establish that if you use them to upload a file that you are granting them the legal right to publish that file. It has to be worldwide because you may be uploading to anywhere in the world.
Digit-Al··on When Not to Obey Orders (2019)
Interesting. This goes some way to addressing an issue I had been wondering about recently. I am a UK citizen, not US, so have little familiarity with US military. With the recent news on Trump declaring that Greenland should belong to the US I was wondering what the US military would do if ordered to carry out an unprovoked attack on an allied nation. This does seem to suggest that there is a very real possibility that they could refuse.
