DiggyJohnson··on Highlighting My Code Based on How Much I Care
Thanks for sharing I love this theme. Implementing it now this morning and really appreciate the middle ground between no highlighting and the popular rainbow chaos themes.
DiggyJohnson··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
I think you might be missing a couple words because it’s not clear what you grievance is. Not tipping a waiter in the USA is poor form regardless of your individual opinion on tipping culture.
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Good god lol

Those places also are providing more opportunities for their populations than the EU. It’s way more nuanced than the dichotomy you laid out. The only reason this isn’t extremely obvious is Europe’s cultural and institutional inertia and society wealth. Without these head start I can almost guarantee you wouldn’t be making the same point about fiddling with regulatory minutia.
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
I love democracy but it seems like you’re implying that everyone gets a veto or nobody. That’s obviously untenable.
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
The EU is the product of the decisions of its members and structure of the coalition. Outsiders have little reason to distinguish the nuance when the discussion has to do with the EU market as a whole.
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Vouched even though you could have reworded this much more civilly it’s a legitimate point
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
EU single stage and European Federalism are not as inevitable as you imply. They are both legitimate but unpopular positions to say the least
DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
That’s because it would not be possible to discuss reasonably these things without writing a thesis. It’s better to hand wave the cost of the externalities and those that are familiar with the domain will understand - rather than writing a thesis on “the externalities of manufacturing and distributing <product> in this <industry> <subsector> in <country> and relative cost to export versus produce locally.”

How do you see it differently?

DiggyJohnson··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
That’s just a tangentially related fact and not very relevant to this discussion from my perspective

I don’t think the electronics spare parts market makes up a sizable chunk of Chinese exports to the West but I could be wrong
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
It doesn’t make sense to assume SF logistics even on this board because it’s such an outlier. Just my opinion.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I just wish I could have this discussion without finding out that the interlocutor has a top 2% percentile commute distance.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I guess if you consider your commute as purely work time then it starts making more sense. Maybe I’m unusual in that I don’t loathe my commute and see the time as 100% personal time.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
In NYC commute times are still under 45 minutes for most tech professionals door to door.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I’ve found the discourse around commute times to be incredibly hyperbolic. 90 minute one-way commutes are an extreme outlier for professionals (USA). Genuinely like two standard deviations from normal.

Turn the selfie viewport off if possible. It’s the only reason that camera on meetings feel worse than in person meetings.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
$20k for the company to facilitate your workspace or $20k of net cost to you the employee to comply with RTO? If the latter and assuming a reasonable commute (15-35 minutes) one way how did you arrive at that number?
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Did you ever consider downsizing or renting to be closer to work? I can’t imagine choosing to commute that far every day.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
For what it’s worth having to relocate for work if the new work isn’t local has been the norm for like 10000+ years. I’m not sure it’s absurd, but it is a trade off.
DiggyJohnson··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I’m always confused why the default commute time in these discussions is always 60 or 90 minutes one way. 60+ minute commutes are outliers and I don’t understand why a person would take a job that far away without being aware of the commute or moving closer to the work. Does that make sense? Most American commute 10-30 minutes. That’s the middle of the bell curve.
DiggyJohnson··on Discovery of a multicomponent alloy forged by the Hiroshima atomic blast
why would you wish for this?
DiggyJohnson··on Severance
My condolences for whatever career path led you to actually believe that
DiggyJohnson··on Multiple Mouse Cursors in Wayland
It’s good to see the minimal drag to border behavior coming to all the OSs and DEs these days. I’m a weirdo and use i3 so I relate to this concern and am very comfortable with tiling for lots of applications. However there’s sometimes I wish I could just tell my display manager to treat the single WH wide monitor as two separate displays with dimensions, e.g. W(H-x) and W*(H+x).

Not sure the best level to implement this. There’s probably already solutions for this now that I think about it…

DiggyJohnson··on Plasma Tunnels Reveal How Dying Satellites Fall to Earth
What do you mean? Especially by “ignorance of meteors”? Are you opposed to all launches if your preference is zero?

Please consider that I’m very familiar with natural and artificial meteor falls if you choose to respond

DiggyJohnson··on Plasma Tunnels Reveal How Dying Satellites Fall to Earth
I’m not GP but your original comment did not come across as neutral
DiggyJohnson··on Plasma Tunnels Reveal How Dying Satellites Fall to Earth
Why do you consider the ideal point for this question absolute 0 zero reentries rather than the minimal number of reentries that don’t cause damage to the atmosphere?
DiggyJohnson··on Plasma Tunnels Reveal How Dying Satellites Fall to Earth
If it turns out the junk truly disintegrates without any significant affect to the atmosphere then GP is saying that it’s not actually a problem and not actually “junk”. Space junk usually refers to stuff junking up things in the same way a rusted out sedan ruins a yard.

If the sedan disappeared it wouldn’t really be considered junk. If the sedan disappeared but left behind a puddle of poison the label would still apply.
