Devilboy··on Does everyone hate MongoDB?
At least with a serious RDBMS you'll have loads of awesome tools and solid experts around to help you solve your scaling problems.
Devilboy··on Does everyone hate MongoDB?
> The fact that you base your impression of MongoDB based on ZERO evidence just conjecture that the slowness of their site is database related says a lot about you too. There are many other reasons it could equally be: app server, network etc.

Those other things are trivial to fix (e.g. add more app servers) so I too think that it's safe to assume it's probably the data store's fault.

> But it does 'just work' that's the whole point.

Devilboy··on Making Instant C# Viable - Vizualization
Side effects is definitely the biggest problem to solve here. For SQL you can start a transaction and roll it back afterwards. Disk access can be done with snapshots. Network traffic... well I guess it depends on what you're doing exactly. There's lots to do but it can work.

Devilboy··on Programmers Must Take Vitamin D
Every day at about lunch time I go lie on the roof in the sun for 10 minutes - doctor's orders. I also take D supplements but that alone was not enough to get my levels back to the normal range so I have to get some actual sun as often as I can too.

It's a bit of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation here in Australia: Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70, while approximately one out of three Australians have vitamin D deficiency...

Devilboy··on Robot cars on public roads? California says yes
Autonomous trucks are already used in mines in Australia. They are apparently more reliable than humans, because they never drive too fast, they never drive too close to the edges, and of course they never get tired or distracted.
Devilboy··on Robot cars on public roads? California says yes
The cars will be programmed to always ensure that there is enough room to stop the car safely when something unexpected happens. BMW already has a system to automatically stop the vehicle safely if the driver is suddenly incapacitated. And Volvo has one that stops you rear-ending someone. Pretty soon we'll have cars that are pretty tough to crash, even though the human will still drive it almost 100% of the time.

That will be amazing, I can't wait!

Devilboy··on The Hidden Truths about Calories
Our diets changed. If we revert to eating what humans ate 100,000 years ago we do NOT need to count calories and we do not get fat. What happened is we started cooking and eating things that could not be eaten raw, like grains, potatoes and so on. If you eat only stuff that can be eaten raw your body will do a pretty good job of maintaining your ideal weight without counting calories (assuming you don't have a thyroid problem or something of course)

Devilboy··on Enforcing Different Passwords for Different Sites
They do encrypt passwords but that doesn't matter. You can still log in to their accounts and do anything you want. And if for some reason you really do want the actual passwords you can obtain those too, obviously they get decrypted to send to the website you're logging in to so just capture it at that point. Normal people don't configure master passwords.
Devilboy··on Enforcing Different Passwords for Different Sites
If you want to MAKE people use secure passwords you assign them a random password and don't allow them to choose their own. They'll write it down on a piece of paper making them pretty damn secure against almost anything except a physical break-in.

Devilboy··on Google's Autonomous cars complete 300,000 miles without an accident
I don't think this will be a problem because we're likely to see a gradual move towards fully self-driven cars where humans still drive but the computer takes over only when needed to avoid accidents. Volvo already has a system that stops you rear-ending other vehicles and BMW has a system that safely pulls the car over if the driver suddenly gets incapacitated. Eventually the most advanced cars will never cause an accident while still being human-driven. From there the leap to let go of the wheel is not that big and I think it will be reasonably easy.
