Devasta··on AI (2014)
> How is that universal basic income scheme coming along?

If the Epstein class won't allow for everyone to have a reasonable standard of living when they relied on workers to produce, the chances of them allowing it when they don't is next to nil. They couldn't even bear the thought of people working from home, for no other reason than the workers liked it, and that cost them nothing.

Devasta··on Rob Pike’s Rules of Programming (1989)
> "Premature optimization is the root of all evil."

This Axiom has caused far and away more damage to software development than the premature optimization ever will.

Devasta··on ATMs didn’t kill bank teller jobs, but the iPhone did
> People when they mature have an innate desire to work. It is good for body and mind.

That doesn't mean it has to be wage labor though.

Devasta··on ATMs didn’t kill bank teller jobs, but the iPhone did
> the value just in the co-opting of another human being's attention?

Thats a weird way of describing it.

A machine telling me to exercise and eat right will be ignored, even if the advice is correct. A person I trust taking me aside, looking me in the eye and asking me the same would be taken far more seriously.

Devasta··on Iranians describe scenes of catastrophe after Tehran's oil depots bombed
Sorry, is it your assertion that Trump isn't a child molestor???
Devasta··on Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is stepping down
Bluesky is very strange, it's got potential to endure as a fairly popular social media site but it's kinda obvious that it's staff are contemptuous of their users.

The intended audience was meant to be blockchain weirdos with encyclopedic knowledge of the age of consent in every state, but instead they are stuck with a core userbase of Furries and LGBT people.

They don't know how to fix this, so they'll be stuck floundering for a while to come trying and failing to return to their core mission.

Devasta··on Iranians describe scenes of catastrophe after Tehran's oil depots bombed
Regardless of what you feel about the government of Iran, it is not inaccurate to say that country is in a fight for survival against a cabal of child molestors working to bring about the apocalypse.

Anything they do in this conflict is justified, anything less than their total victory is a disaster for the world.

Devasta··on AI and the Ship of Theseus
This is awful news, but I don't know what can be done, is it possible to have a new GPL4 that deals with this? I doubt it.
Devasta··on Relax NG is a schema language for XML (2014)
It is heavily used today, it's everywhere in finance and banking, it's just not on the web, so browser and web devs are forced endlessly to re implement shitty versions of things they could have had out of the box decades earlier.
Devasta··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Iran is a lesson to all: as soon as Israel or the US take a disliking to you you have to rush for nuclear weapons.

Iran has been the grown up in the room for well over a decade at this stage and it didn't matter one bit. You cannot appease Israel or the US because that don't want to be appeased, they want to bomb Iran into a lawless wasteland. They could have switched to a secular liberal democracy and it'd make no difference.

Devasta··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
They really should be a proscribed organization.
Devasta··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
I can understand the need to restrict some stuff kids can see, like when I was a teen it me hours and hours to download one 2 minute porn clip from kazaa, but these days you could download a lifetime worth in one weekend. That can't be healthy.

That being said nothing about these laws is about protecting children; their primary purpose is to crack down on the next Just Stop Oil or Palestine Action so for that reason should be opposed.

Devasta··on Mark Zuckerberg to testify in landmark social media trial
Unironically, Zuckerberg should be in the Hague. We tried people in Nuremberg for less than he has done in his life.
Devasta··on JavaScript-heavy approaches are not compatible with long-term performance goals
Why would performance be a goal?

If a native desktop app crashes, your users will gnash their teeth and curse your name. A web app? They shrug and refresh the page. They have been trained to do this for decades now, why would anyone believe this isn't intended behavior?

No one has a reasonable expectation of quality when it comes to the web.

Devasta··on You can't trust the internet anymore
But if approval of a new user in the enclave requires vouching by an existing member, then they will be anyone who joins lest they are banned themselves right?

I'm talking about like 100-200 members max social clubs, not subthing like subreddits with tens of thousands of users.

Devasta··on You can't trust the internet anymore
The future of the internet is going to be invite-only enclaves. I sometimes wonder is anyone working on the next generation of discussion forums, or if it'll be a return to PHPBB.
Devasta··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
> What I don't find plausible is the specific kind of harm alleged in the case discussed in the source article, where having videos attuned to your interests constantly fed to you causes you to become depressed and suicidal.

Why couldn't it?

Start with funny videos, like clips of animals doing silly things.

Then have the occasional cringy video of a person being funny but slightly cringe in there, something akin to you've been framed.

Then have people who are being cringe but its carefully framed, a well edited video of some left wing student pushing for a policy but in a clumsy way, being embarrassing the way all teenagers are.

After a while longer, your feed is nothing but clips of BEN SHAPIRO PUBLICALLY EXECUTES THIS SOCIAL JUSTIC WARRIOR ON THE ALTAR OF FACTS AND LOGIC.

BEN SHAPIRO CLIP COMPILATION - OWNS THIS TRANS ACTIVIST- FACTS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS!

Then you suddenly are getting people talking about their concerns™ about trans people in sports, how there might be unaddressed issues, and then Helen Joyce and the like are appearing in your feed, sounding calm and reasonable while they politely and civilly discuss how all trans people are inherently vile sexual predators engaged in a global conspiracy to sterilize your children.

More and more right wing content, drip drip drip, absolutely no one step that is that distinguishable from the previous, until eventually your feed is nothing but Q-Anon if you are lucky, and outright Nazism if not.

Devasta··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
Just ban personalized advertising and be done with it, they will do any amount of harm so long as it gets a click.
Devasta··on Shifts in U.S. Social Media Use, 2020–2024: Decline, Fragmentation, Polarization (2025)
In the past, I could go onto Facebook and see what my friends were up to, and share updates with them about what I was doing. It was great for arranging nights out.

Today, it's a dumpster fire, I can't see what anyone is doing, it's just AI videos and engagement bait.

Discord is the replacement for my friends at least.

Devasta··on Man who videotaped himself BASE jumping in Yosemite arrested, says it was AI
We have to plan for this to become more common in future.

You trying to start a union in your workplace? Expect video of you jacking off in public to leak online. Video of cop mercilessly beating a black guy? Inadmissible, could have been AI.

It will only get worse as video and audio generation get better and better.

Devasta··on Y Combinator will let founders receive funds in stablecoins
Not once in mankind's history has any great product or feat been enhanced or achieved through the use of timesheets.

Don't get bogged down with that stuff.

Devasta··on Spain to ban social media access for under-16s, PM Sanchez says
> I'm just not sure why now and not previously.

Shock at how many people believe Palestinians are human got the ball rolling, but now its prepping for the fallout of the release of more and more Epstein files.

Devasta··on Why TikTok's first week of American ownership was a disaster
"No App" is still a completely acceptable result, they didn't buy tiktok to make money, they did it to stop people talking about things that the owners disagree with.
Devasta··on Why TikTok's first week of American ownership was a disaster
How is it a disaster? They still control the app, and now they can adjust the algorithms to dampen down on discourse they don't want. So what if they lose a chunk of the audience, they can force a sale of whatever app those people move to too.
Devasta··on Parents might age faster or slower based on how many kids they have
Insanity is hereditary: you get it from your children.
Devasta··on The lost art of XML
Its really bizarre, you talk about Rust or TypeScript and everyone understands how doing a little bit extra planning up front yields to great results as everyone can work from solid foundations, but you suggest they do the same for your data by using XML and its wailing and gnashing of teeth, bringing up anecdotes about SOAP and DTDs like we're all still living in 2003, concatenating strings together for our XML and trying to find answers to problems on forums or on ExpertSexChange.

The vast, vast majority of devs today have never known anything except JSON for their React frontends, but honestly if they gave XML a try and weren't working from second hand horror stories from 20 years ago I think a lot more people would like it than you expect.

Devasta··on Danish pension fund divesting US Treasuries
"How did you go bankrupt? Two ways: gradually and then suddenly."

--Ernest Hemingway

Devasta··on Worst of breed software
Thats honestly the reason why most stuff is a web app these days. For desktop software you need to deal with IT security losers who recoil in horror at the idea of computers running software, and god help you if you need a port opened.

Far better to shove everything through port 443 and redownload the software over and over until the end of time.

Devasta··on The Performance Revolution in JavaScript Tooling
For tools devs use, performance is important, so we will do anything and everything we can to squeeze out those few extra seconds of delay, they all add up.

For tools users use, developer experience is important, so they get whatever React and Electron slop we hurl over the fence.

Tale as old as the web.

Devasta··on CSS sucks because we don't bother learning it (2022)
It's also just kinda bad. Like, people were celebrating the has() pseudo class allowing them to do things with selectors that would be trivial in XPath in its first version 20 years previously.

I will give the people who work on CSS props though, they are the only ones interested in advancing browser's capabilities as something more than just a JS runtime, that is to be commended.
