Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Are there any books, sources that outline system vulnerabilities?
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) system provides a reference-method for publicly known information-security vulnerabilities and exposures.

Davidbrcz··on Roomba Inventor Joe Jones on His New Weed-Killing Robot
Have a look at naio technologies (http://www.naio-technologies.com/en/).

They make agricultural robots for easing farming. They have a bunch of robot to remove weed

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Reminders for long-running shell jobs?
Have a look at liquid prompt https://github.com/nojhan/liquidprompt
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: What is the least “sexy” field in Computer Science?
I would go with network calculus
Davidbrcz··on Is Ada a failed language?
"it[Ada] failed to find its niche. "

This is plain wrong. One of Ada's favorite niche is real time embedded systems with a strong emphasis on safety and reliability. It is widely used in aerospace, railway, ...

Davidbrcz··on Keylogger in Hewlett-Packard Audio Driver
I have not been following all of the incidents that happened in the past. Do you mind sharing your list ?
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: (again): how would you interview senior developer candidates?
A senior developer is here to write good code but also to help younger developer. Thus attitude is key aspect of the candidate to consider and would ask :

- How do you handle a young developer who is making mistakes ? Do you take time to help him ? A concrete example would to give him/her a bad piece of code and ask him/her to peer-review it.

- Are you ready to give some talks about whatever your are good/expert at ?

- What is your attitude toward optimization (I would expect something like : don't optimize until it is correct and needed, but don't write the original code without performances in mind).

- Check if the candidate is stubborn. A senior grumpy stubborn developer can be a pain to work with.

Bonus: what is the job ?

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Which static site generator you use?
Hugo : https://gohugo.io/
Davidbrcz··on MIT offers $250,000 award for breaking the rules
It's ironic when you remember Aaron Swartz case
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Really afraid to start my own technical blog, any tips?
Worst case scenario, you write something wrong and somebody notices and put a comment. Simply acknowledge, correct the post and carry on.

Remember that many scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals turn out to be wrong/not reproducible or contain errors .

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Would it be feasible to send a Curiosity-like rover to an exoplanet?
The signal would be too weak. See free space propagation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_propagation#Free_space_p....

Remember, we are already using super sensitive telescopes for looking at the star nearby the exoplanets.

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Would it be feasible to send a Curiosity-like rover to an exoplanet?
You are mixing several concepts.

To propel a spacecraft, due to the law of conservation of momentum, if you want to go in one direction, you have to push something (the propellant) in the opposite direction.

It's the momentum of the ejected stuff (mass*velocity) that matters for maneuvering in space. You have to carry that propellant with you and accelerate it. You can use specific impulse to compare efficiency of rockets (the higher, the more efficient is the rocket in creating forward thrust with the same amount of propellant). The best engines we have are ion thrusters because we can accelerate a small amount of gaz (not very heavy to carry) very fast => big momentum. But thrust is limited, this why you can not lift off from Earth with an ion thruster.

Nuclear energy is just used to power spacecrafts in electricity when you can't use solar panels.

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Would it be feasible to send a Curiosity-like rover to an exoplanet?
No.

From a traveling point of view, sending a probe to Pluton (New Horizons) took us 10 years and the probe had a nice pull from Jupiter. The closest exoplanet is 6 700 times farer than Pluton.

From a communication point of view, the probe/rover would not be able to send us back any kind of signal. Even if we were able to communicate, a round-trip message would take 8 years.

And remember, we are not always successful when sending a probe/rover to Mars, which is the closest planet to Earth.

Davidbrcz··on A Visual Introduction to Probability and Statistics
The site is awesome
Davidbrcz··on TED: Can we build AI without losing control over it?
I'm more afraid of a computer that can't be switched off (no matter the reason) than I'm of AI.
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: What math should I know well to be able to learn ML
I would go Linear algebra, probability/statistics/bayesian reasoning, optimization,

Also, have a look here: https://github.com/off99555/machine-learning-curriculum

Davidbrcz··on Generator of random 3D abstract forms
Do you know these images were generated ?
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for creating diagrams?
Dia, open source. It can draw many kind of diagrams
Davidbrcz··on [poll] do you use Firefox mobile?
I use it
Davidbrcz··on Ask:HN a strong argument for privacy
Give me your porn history and I'll post on your Facebook wall. What do you mean you don't want to because it's private ? See, you have something to hide !
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to Unity?
cinnamon desktop
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Best Git GUI for linux?
I would say Emacs + Magit (https://github.com/magit/magit). The legend says that some people started using Emacs for Magit only.

You can also try this https://hackernoon.com/be-125-more-efficient-with-git-60556a... to some point emulate what magit does with plain CLI and a fuzzy finder.

Davidbrcz··on Donald Trump says 'no computer is safe'
You are right. So keep the computers off the network and send an encrypted flash drive with a key ? The latency will go through the roof but the bandwidth might be acceptable

NB: I know that computers off the network can still leak information

Davidbrcz··on Donald Trump says 'no computer is safe'
This might be the most pertinent thing he has ever said. But when he says "If you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier.", it is not entirely safe, one still need encryption because mail can be intercepted.
Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: How do you recognize a great programmer to hire?
I find the following matrix extremely useful for that purpose : http://sijinjoseph.com/programmer-competency-matrix/

It is not specific to any language and it gives a grade on many many relevant aspects of everyday programming (IDE, automatic build, framework, data structure...)

Davidbrcz··on Ask HN: Why are software engineering salaries in the U.K. so low?
You can not just compare raw figures. You have to take into account other expenses such as housing (which can be tremendously high in some US areas such as SF/Bay area), health insurance, retirement plan,...

Once all expenses are taken into account, I think that US salaries are higher but not _that_ higher.

Davidbrcz··on It Takes 6 Days to Change 1 Line of Code (2015)
This is true beauty
Davidbrcz··on What Makes a Password Good?
Its length : the longer, the better. Nothings beats an exponential ! Ideally, one should use a pass phrase (a full sentence) instead of a password (a single word, no matter how complicated it is).
