DarwinMailApp··on Twitter confesses to more adtech leaks
It's not my Alexa I'm talking about!

I have no reason to buy one. I made a list of benefits and it really wasn't strong enough!

DarwinMailApp··on Twitter confesses to more adtech leaks
I like your point as I can relate to that opinion. However my outlook has changed in the last year or so.

There has been several occasions where my conversation somehow turned into relevant web ads. I don't think I'm making a mistake here.

A friend of mine told me of his good friend who left Amazon recently as his job was to listen to what users say to Alexa and ensure Alexa responded correctly. FYI that's both when users say Alexa first and also when they do not. More on that here [1].

I would love some more clarity into what's going on here.

So there are essentially remnants of our browsing history linked to our devices shared among numerous ad companies.

They then serve relevant ads for us all over the web depending on where they are being paid to display relevant ads.

Twitter is at it. We've experienced the same behavior from Google & God knows Facebook is at it too.

I've even had conversations where the only connection we had to the web was our locally running Alexa only to see ads relating to our specific conversation 10 minutes later on the web.

Can anybody think of a technological approach to flagging this behavior?

DarwinMailApp··on Being basic as a virtue
I loved this part: Being mediocre is turning down the combat difficulty on Red Dead so you can play through the game. It’s a resistance to hyper-optimization; the “courage to be ordinary”.

I wholeheartedly agreed with this point as soon as I read it. I adapted this approach while building DarwinMail [1].

There have been countless email & Twitter suggestions for DarwinMail. I've always listened and asked questions until I understood what what the users core message was. However, I do not always implement what has been asked.

I believe in some 'truths' when it comes to building your product while following a basic approach;

1. Users are the core of any business.

2. The feedback you receive from users is the most valuable feedback you will receive on your product as they are the ones actually using your product.

3. You do not have to implement everything your users ask for.

Even though you may not do everything your users ask for, that does not mean you are not listening.

I believe you need to keep your features simple and easy to understand.

Being basic reminds me of the saying 'Slow is smooth and smooth is fast'.

To me that is one of the most important truths when it comes to life and business.

DarwinMailApp··on How to get your first ten customers (2013)
I loved the part where you mentioned we should ‘Shut up and listen to them’.

This worked exceptionally well for DarwinMail [1], which I built to replace Google Inbox months before it was due to be shut down.

DarwinMail received initial traction from a Product Hunt release and a submission to the Show HN section (on the same day).

1. From day 1, I had a contact us option from which I received tremendous amounts of feedback which was instrumental to DarwinMail's development. Many requests & fixes were added to our Trello board via email feedback.

2. I created a public Trello board, from which every single user could see that I am adding their suggestions to the roadmap & working on them too. They could also see the future features.

3. For every user that joined our mailing list, I updated them every other week with the latest updates/fixes and features to DarwinMail.

4. I posted to Twitter regularly on various changes such as UI enhancements and mini-feature releases. I also had a lot of correspondence with users via this medium.

5. I gave away free lifetime coupons to anyone who would share DarwinMail with their friends. This generated a lot of momentum.

I hope this helps. While there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to getting your first users, I have learned so much from the experiences of others and so I hope I have provided the same kind of useful information for you.

Thanks for your question.

IMAP is certainly on the todo list :) [1]

For the moment, I am focusing on Gmail in order to develop the features users want and fix the bugs that inevitably arise. Then I will move onto IMAP.

I want to increase the likelihood of a smooth transition to other emails providers. I am both fixing bugs and implementing new features every day so we are getting closer and closer to IMAP every week :)

Thank you so much for your kind words :)

DarwinMail's bundles work just our iPhone's group notifications.

You can group emails via its label and use that to bundle them in your Inbox. This will be done automatically. The only step you must take is simply turn on the bundle via our 'Manage Labels' modal.

This allows you to fully customize bundles based on any criteria such as sender, title contains words, has attachments and so on :)

Please let me know if you have any other questions :)

DarwinMailApp··on Show HN: I built custom bundles into DarwinMail to replace Google Inbox
Hello HN,

Today is a great day!

I have built custom bundles into DarwinMail in a bid to replace the void left behind by Google Inbox. As you may know already, Google Inbox shut down last March and I have personally been hurting since!

Thus, let me introduce to you, CUSTOM BUNDLES! [1]

Now you can bundle any email in your Inbox. From a specific sender, from a trip away, a work party and so on.

Check out the custom bundles now!

Have a wonderful day,

Joey - Creator of DarwinMail

No no you are most certainly not doing anything wrong :)

It's a fault with me, I'm currently exploring the issue and hope to resolve it during this weekend.

It means a lot to me. Please note I will always put your feedback and requests first, as it is you and every other user who makes suggestions that ultimately help DarwinMail to grow.

1. I understand that the product can only become great if each & every suggestion is listened to, so thank you! 2. DarwinMail has a public roadmap, public changelog, and open lines of communication.

3. The primary focus of Darwin Mail is to help you be productive. Each and every change is made for that sole reason.
