Darthy··on What If Life Did Not Originate on Earth?
Update: found it. Apparently the theory is contentious, with accusations that they cherry-picked their data points. Discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5580334
Darthy··on What If Life Did Not Originate on Earth?
There was this interesting article posted here some time ago that plotted the complexity of life found on earth vs time, and by using the right methodology and logarithmic scales, it arrived at a nice linear line over many data points and several billions of years. And the line converged to a 0 point, but that point was a few billion years before earth was created 4.5 billion years ago, adding more credibility to a panspermia theory. Can anybody remember that article and its url?
Darthy··on A Norwegian town built a giant mirror to deflect the sun (2017)
Fascinating. Is it correct that with both implementations, you cannot move the virtual sun around - it's always shining from the exact same angle?
Darthy··on A Norwegian town built a giant mirror to deflect the sun (2017)
I haven't seen either product in person, but from looking at youtube videos of both, it seems like CoeLux has a clearly defined, properly round sun, while with your product, the sun looks fuzzy and cross-shaped, like viewed through a diffraction grating [1]. Am I correct in this characterization?

Interesting. How do you differentiate yourself from CoeLux, which has been doing a very similar thing for a few years now?

Darthy··on Apple and Samsung fined for deliberately slowing down phones
> Do we want a literal slow-software police?

This court case shows that we kinda now already have one.

The phones from 5 years ago already had amazing processors with billions of cycles per second. They can probably do nearly everything.

But you know us software engineers: "make it faster till it runs wells on my test kit, then oh well ship it!"

I think this ruling is a nudge into a better way. Yes deplay updates for more than 2 years, but don't stop optimizing new stuff when the latest phone can run it pretty well - keep optimizing until devices from the last 5 years run it very well.

Also, the trailer for the TV drama "Kidding", with Jim Carrey playing a character somewhat inspired by Mr. Rogers, was released yesterday:

Darthy··on Emirates Planes Could Be Going Windowless
Note that you can turn it off at any time. And there are no ads there, it's just a pure 4K 60fps stream from the bridge with some artifical railings rendered on top. There are even 2 cameras, one for each side, and you get the view in the correct direction.

My position is also to not remove any windows, but give the 90% of passengers without a window seat a window seat.

Darthy··on Emirates Planes Could Be Going Windowless
For an example of this been done well, check out Royal Caribbean's Virtual Balconies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4__AIB8Bl-4

Note that RCI did not remove any windows, but instead used tech to give a window to people in inside cabins where there are no windows. IMHO this should be the way to go for planes as well: Give everybody a window seat, with VR. And then also use that VR to show all those movies in a virtual cinema, show VR games etc.

Darthy··on Canon has sold its last film camera
Well, the "M" in the regular Leica M-Series means "Messsucher". The M in "MP" means "mechanical" (as in "mechanical perfection"). So based on that one could argue that the MP isn't part of the regular series :-)
Darthy··on Canon has sold its last film camera
Leica has just discontinued its last "regular" film camera, the M7, a few days ago:

https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2018/05/leica-m7-film-ca...

All that remains are the purely mechanical Leica MP and M-A film cameras, plus many digital cameras of course.

Darthy··on Filming 100-Megapixel Aerials Over New York
That's incorrect. You're thinking of a low pass filter, for which the Red supports a variety of filters that you can switch. What the parent most likely is seeing is bad nearest-neighbor downscaling (e.g bad selection of downscaling algorithm).
Darthy··on Filming 100-Megapixel Aerials Over New York
Correct. Master Primes, Cookes and Leica Summilux are all PL-mount, with which the Red is completely compatible. Seeing such a bullshit attack as the top comment is really unfortunate.
Darthy··on US cell carriers are selling access to real-time phone location data
Off the top of my head, you could have this system: you use a new id that authenticates you with the carrier every n packets, and you do the routing from the source to your id on a server that you control yourself.
Darthy··on US cell carriers are selling access to real-time phone location data
This is a problem with the GSM/UMTS standards themselves. Carriers always know where you are, but one could create a standard where they wouldn't have to know unless you make a call. With enough encryption and effort, I'm pretty sure one could even create a standard where carriers would never know where you are, even while you are using services.
Darthy··on Buffett to Musk: ‘There Are Some Pretty Good Moats Around’
According to the latest Tesla owners terms&conditions, owners cannot use a different ride sharing service than Teslas to send their automated cars off working, once such a service exists. A classic case of a "moat" if there ever was one. Musk should put his money where his mouth is and scrap that passage.
Darthy··on Brain connectivity reflects human aesthetic responses to music (2016)
Well, all art is basically things with no clear value for survival. You could even say that's the definition of it :-)
Darthy··on Google Workers Urge C.E.O. To Pull Out of Pentagon A.I. Project
We can all look at the data. The graph I linked ends in 2003 (like indicated in the graph itself), and jpollock posted the value for 2016, which is 70, so even higher than 2003. In other words, you are telling incorrect things and when called out, instead of giving in to reality, you are doubling down telling even more incorrect things. Not good. And it's quite saddening that in this forum dedicated to rational discourse, your flawed reasoning is being rewarded with so much attention, currently sitting at fifth place among all root comments.
Darthy··on Google Workers Urge C.E.O. To Pull Out of Pentagon A.I. Project
When it comes to life-or-death questions, we should make informed decisions. "Just trust me" fundamentally lacks any valuable information that furthers the discussion. In addition, "just trust me" also endangers less clear thinking people to sway based on emotion instead of well-founded cold hard facts.

Darthy··on CPU Usage Differences After Applying Meltdown Patch at Epic Games
Thank you for the explanation, and especially for being non-snarky, which unfortunately seems to be getting rarer and rarer on this forum.
Darthy··on CPU Usage Differences After Applying Meltdown Patch at Epic Games
The Meltdown attack requires an attacker to have a piece of code executed on your server. Epic's servers are used for login, where people send you data, and for game logic, where people also just send you data like "player x moved his avatar here, player y shoots etc". If all the server does is execute the code which Epic wrote themselves and already trust, why would it need to apply the Meltdown patch?

Could somebody please coin a name for this? Wikipedia currently calls it "Intel KPTI flaw", but that is very vague. It's quite difficult to talk about something without a simple easy-to-remember name.

> these are the kind of vulnerabilities that the NSA would salivate over

No need to salivate over something that you paid for and that you already used for 8 years.

Post-Snowden if you believe the NSA has already broken into most things and has very often paid to facilitate this (like loss-making Skype US server routing, or inefficiently using valuable silicon space for IME), you are no longer a conspiracy theory lunatic - you are just a mere sane person applying Occam's razor.
