Dannymetconan··on How to negotiate salary in the software development market of 2019
I get that but my experience has been the exact opposite for all but my first job.

I really don't think being able to pass these "programming puzzle" type interviews is a good measure of a good engineer. Just finishing them is often not what a company is looking for.

The market is "oversaturated" if you take all the candidates completing these bootcamp type courses. Some are fantastic but many I have encountered still have a lot to learn.

Just because there are a large number of candidates does not mean that a large number of them are at all qualified. There is a huge variance of quality across the development market from that I have experienced. No real proof of any of these claims here.

In this case most of the 'locals' are foreign men brought to Dubai to work on the sites. They live in horrible accommodation further out into the desert and probably wouldn't even be let into the malls if they tried.

Or in Vietnam it was about 10 euro a shot and probably would have been free if I had been a local.
Dannymetconan··on Ask HN: As a developer, what are your biggest pain points?
Being told I was getting hired a backend Java developer for a first job and then working in a JavaScript, Java and DevOps full stack role for the last two years.

The frustration that comes from being required to be competent on a large range of technologies because of this and feeling just as I start to invest enough time in one I have to switch to doing something else. Most recently was working with Jenkins and Groovy!

Dannymetconan··on Ask HN: How's the Paris startup scene?
Just a comment but 30k for 2 years full experience seems low. I'm working in another European capital and I'm at 40k for a similar full-stack dev role.

The only alternative would be to develop everything in house and to purchase and run your own servers.
Dannymetconan··on Ask HN: Strategies for mentoring junior developers?
As a junior dev one aspect of mentoring which I have always valued is being given time to explain to a senior dev how I am about to go about implementing a solution. This coupled with feedback on how I should change my code and why is great.
Dannymetconan··on Great things and people that I discovered, learned, read, met, etc in 2017
I would think 3/4 hours is a very optimistic time to read any decent novel. Though I'm not really sure what the length of a decent novel would be but most books I have read would take at least 8 hours.
Dannymetconan··on Ask HN: Do other fields have their own HN?
It's a great model why change what works!
Dannymetconan··on A million-dollar engineering problem
A great write up. Really wish that they had given some indication about how much the original bill was. Sounds very effective but 1m of 100m isn't that much!
