It's worth noting that Caffeine has a built-in OS X Command Line equivalent, Caffeinate - https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin...

My own suggestions to add:

* Keka

* BetterTouchTool

* Cyberduck

* AppCleaner

D4AHNGM··on For German, Swiss Privacy Start-Ups, a Post-Snowden Boom
Eh. Relying on simple geography in an age where everything is connected seems beyond daft.

I've been trying to navigate away from a reliance on US-based services, but at the same time I'd much prefer to move over to a service that didn't have any data to hand over rather than trust Switzerland, Germany or any other country not to just suck that data up themselves.

D4AHNGM··on GNU hackers discover HACIENDA government surveillance
I find it quite amusing they don't roll with SSL/TLS on their website.
D4AHNGM··on CipherShed, the Truecrypt fork
Interestingly the FUSE element is going to get much more difficult come Yosemite. Apple has implemented a strict unsigned kext ban on Yosemite, and obviously FUSE relies on those kernel extensions, so effectively, building things like FUSE from source is going to get a lot more difficult for end-users.

The FUSE element will still work fine if you take a signed OSXFUSE binary for example, because those binaries & the kexts within them are signed, but distributing source packages to OS X at least is going to become more painful.

D4AHNGM··on Node Version Numbers
'This' debate has kicked off over at Node again, on whether a mature, developed project should be versioned in major.minor release numbers, or whether it's acceptable to stick with 0.10.20 and so on indefinitely.

I know there are a ton of developers in HN, so I'm wondering what the community's views are on this debate.

D4AHNGM··on The first Swift conference worldwide (Feb 6th, Paris)
Darn. I'll keep my fingers crossed they don't sell out until I get a little more cash on hand and can buy one then! :)

This looks interesting. How long are the super early-bird tickets open for?
D4AHNGM··on GitHub and BitBucket's SSL Provider's Cert has expired
Is this only an issue for those using Google Chrome? I haven't had any SSL issues with Github all day using Firefox.
D4AHNGM··on Hydra: A lightweight OS X window manager with a powerful API
This thread really does show the best of Hacker News. I wandered in here intrigued by Hydra and ended up checking out 3 or 4 open-source pieces of software that do similar things thanks to recommendations here.

The choice is absolutely brilliant. I love seeing so many open-source recommendations. I went for Spectacle in the end, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on Hydra and seeing how it progresses.

D4AHNGM··on Minimal Wikipedia redesign concept
I do like clean minimalism, but I'm not sure it works on a site like Wikipedia. The NYTimes recent redesign was a pretty good meld of minimalism around the article but retaining functionality.

I fear that your design kind of strips away a whole ton of functionality and with something like Wikipedia functionality is infinitely more important than design.

Kudos on actually coding up a completely working live preview though. That's not something I see too often with these kinds of proposals.

D4AHNGM··on Minimal Wikipedia redesign concept
Wow. I know it's a purely personal taste thing, but I think your redesign is leagues ahead of OP's proposal. Your design keeps the informative, interconnected aspect of Wikipedia's design and then cleans it up slightly and makes it more readable, but does so in a way that won't alienate the average user.

I might actually see if I can find the time to code up a preview of your design and see how it handles 'in the wild', as such.

D4AHNGM··on Show HN: Accounts, a simple address book for iOS
This looks pretty interesting. I've never been contented with the iOS default contacts but haven't really found a way to replace that.

I think I'll download the beta and play around with it for a while. I do like the Android way of handling contacts.

I'd be more reassured by seeing a fuller privacy policy rather than a vague promise not to violate privacy, but perhaps that'll come in time.

D4AHNGM··on Bitcoin balance lookup
This is pretty nice. Are you planning to spread the integration out to other popular cryptos as well?
D4AHNGM··on Inside Swift
Thanks for this link. The site still seems to be down, 9 hours later.
D4AHNGM··on Quitting Chrome: Because Google+
Worthwhile noting that even if you have the Flash Player Plug-in installed in Safari it runs much smoother & is less resource intensive than Chrome. Apple seem to have done a great job on the latest Safari.
D4AHNGM··on Quitting Chrome: Because Google+
DDG is great! They've come a long way in the last year, and I've switched to using DDG as my primary search resource on iOS, Linux & OS X. The amount of times I can't find what I need on DDG and have to revert to Google Search these days is less than 10% I'd say.
D4AHNGM··on Safari to Include DuckDuckGo as a Built-In Search Option
I'd suspect that at least on Yosemite you'll be able to disable the web search. You can already choose to chop out huge sections of Spotlight's optional functionality on Mavericks, so I don't see why that'd change come Yosemite.
D4AHNGM··on IPv6 day: Turn Off IPv4 on 6 June 2014
As much as I'd like to participate, removing my IPv4 capacity would result in me having zero internet for the day. I've been asking for well over a year about IPv6 to my ISP and each time they've replied along the lines of 'Erm, well, we're thinking about it, kinda, maybe'.
