Cyranix··on Where my mouth is
Imprecise transcript:

Q: Are you convinced that you're more successful
     because of OCaml?
A: <jokingly> I certainly have job security! But
seriously, I think the answer is yes, for many
reasons that are difficult to tease apart. One
of the big reasons is that it became easier to
hire great programmers. We hired many great
programmers before we switched to OCaml (and
they have since adopted OCaml) but it took more
effort to find them than it took to find great
functional programmers. It's hard to describe
how significant the effect was, but I believe
it was important; our language choice impacted
our tools and results in a positive way.
Cyranix··on Show HN: Wit – Natural language for your app

  - Spanish (Mexican, Castellano, others?)
  - Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese)
  - Hindi
These would be logical next steps with some important commonalities: broad base of native speakers, high importance in the US market (maybe less so for Hindi), and very important dialect differences. Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, and Russian could also force the issue of non-Romanized character sets.
Cyranix··on Pushed to the limit as a banking intern
Allowing that there may be exceptions such as your own case (assuming you are properly assessing your situation), would you still agree that the generalization holds for the vast majority of cases?
Cyranix··on Client-side full text search in CSS
My initial reaction is that you would need an additional moving part to turn this into a vulnerability. Say you had the ability to permalink to a filtered view -- the querystring param could carry an XSS payload... breaking out of the CSS context early, or maybe (and this is off-the-cuff speculation) staying in the CSS context but adding a rule which refers to an attacker-controlled file.
Cyranix··on Adafruit's Trinket
Head over to http://hackaday.com or http://makezine.com and search for Arduino or ATMega or microcontroller -- you should have a ton of hits describing various projects.
Cyranix··on The feds pay for 60 percent of Tor’s development. Can users trust it?
Not his problem, and not a particularly significant downside if he doesn't follow through. A better response for you would be to upvote articles you think are better HN material.
Cyranix··on N.S.A. Foils Much Internet Encryption
That is a really weird conclusion to draw from this article. I don't know who you think is "vilifying" encryption as an application of mathematics.
Cyranix··on Deeply Moving: Deep Learning for Sentiment Analysis
Some out-of-the-box parsing can be done with NLTK and OpenNLP. Just be mindful of the fact that the quality of the parsing is fairly dependent on whether the corpora you provide are sufficiently similar to the corpora that the models (part-of-speech, parsing, chunking, etc.) were trained on.
Cyranix··on Deeply Moving: Deep Learning for Sentiment Analysis
Sentiment analysis implies attitudes, which imply context. A robust sentiment analysis system must either be trained on a targeted corpus (in which entities/concepts and attitudes are well aligned) or include some way of establishing a more targeted context after having been trained on a general-purpose corpus.

That is to say, people generally aren't describing the physical material occupying a toilet in a corpus of movie reviews.

Cyranix··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2013)
I was going to email you, but I feel that it would be beneficial to other job seekers if I posted here instead. This is a rather vague listing, and I don't think there's any way I would apply without a few key questions being answered.

• Can you be any more specific about the nature of your target market? If not, what prevents you from discussing it?

• How can I verify that the company is "highly experienced in its target market and ... has a proven track record of success", given the absence of a website or any discernable press?

• When you say that you're "building a flourishing and lucrative business" and that your "results driven team ... build[s] successful products", is this a reflection of the company's actual status or just its hopes?

If you actually value "clear and effective communication", you might consider a full rewrite of this job posting with honest details.

Cyranix··on Nearly a fifth of scientists are considering abandoning the U.S.
It's definitely not just immigrants returning home. My wife is a neuroscientist, and we emigrated to Canada. Whether we will return is still an open question.
Cyranix··on Details Behind Today's Internet Hacks
I'd suggest extending the idea to non-responsive sites as well. Instead of submitting a link to a company's homepage when they're being DDOSed or are otherwise unavailable, submit a link to their status page if they have one or, failing that, use a third-party indicator. Off the top of my head I can't think of a third-party indicator that would capture point-in-time availability, but a manually crafted URL like http://isup.me/example.com?1970-01-01T00:00:00Z would get the point across just fine.
Cyranix··on The realtime magic behind Moot and how we deliver all your instant notifications
I integrated Atmosphere into a Dropwizard-based project (not on GitHub yet, hoping to get it out there in a week or two -- look for Cyranix/mi5 if interested). Although I did get it to work, it wasn't a smooth experience. There seem to be many ways of accomplishing the same thing which are just different enough to trip you up in subtle ways (at least if you're only a moderately experienced dev like myself), and the documentation is a bit of a mess (scattered, not well translated from French, etc. -- not entirely, but enough to be a pain). Any JavaScript devs interested in this sort of tech could make a much-appreciated contribution to the project by making a client-side script that doesn't depend on jQuery.
Cyranix··on Harp – Open-source web server with built-in pre-processing
Maybe I'm missing something from a design/marketing perspective, but... am I mistaken in thinking that the ice cream imagery totally unrelated to everything else?

On the whole, though, I love the idea. Hope I get a chance to try it out.

Cyranix··on Lifetimes of cryptographic hash functions
The first step is accepting that you have a problem. Fortunately, it's fairly straightforward to fix the problem!

Cyranix··on Legal Weed is Hurting San Francisco's Hippies
If you use NewsBlur to subscribe to their feed, you can use the "intelligence trainer" feature to filter based on author, tags, or phrases in titles -- works quite well almost always. (Not sure if other feed readers have the same capability.)
Cyranix··on MIT Moves to Intervene in Release of Aaron Swartz’s Secret Service File
Does the researcher whose grant application is being sought need to do anything to discover the FOIA request, or does the filing automatically notify them in some manner?
Cyranix··on Chaffing and Winnowing: Confidentiality without Encryption (1998)
But that's rather missing the point, isn't it? The premise is "Under circumstances where encryption is not a viable option, what secure communication methods might be possible?" so responses that ignore the premise, like "just use encryption" or "just don't get into such circumstances", aren't the most salient critiques.

Cyranix··on Kasparov flees Russia on detention fears amid Putin crackdown
My guess is that someone was hoping to draw a parallel between someone fleeing Russia (Kasparov) and someone trying to get into Russia (Snowden).
Cyranix··on Why is nobody using SSL client certificates?
The analogy to mechanical keys doesn't hold up under closer scrutiny, though, right? House keys don't serve as an identity, just an access mechanism. You don't lose all future access to your house if you lose your keys; a locksmith can independently verify (with reasonable certainty) that it's okay for you to obtain a new set of keys which give access to the same house.

I feel like the human predisposition to risk aversion is even more of a factor preventing adoption among average users than poor UX (not to mention lack of awareness). What do I tell my parents when they ask "What if my computer crashes? Would I not be able to log in to the website and see my stuff? What good is using a website if I can't access it from any computer?"

Until something as securely portable and loss-resistant as one's own memory is achieved, I don't see passwords being less popular than any other access mechanism for the average user, no matter how significant the other downsides.

Cyranix··on Useful GitHub patterns
We're not on GitHub (to my dismay) but my company does use Atlassian Stash, and they've been mimicking GitHub more and more with each update.

Our development process does include pull requests, and code review is mandatory (with the number of reviewers configurable at some level), as is a successful build from Jenkins. Stash's UI will not permit a merge operation without satisfying those criteria. There's also a restriction on the master branch so the sneaky commit isn't even possible.

Cyranix··on Is Wine Bullshit?
Yeah, that last paragraph is kind of trolling the readers. When you say fast food restaurants "dilute the quality of their meat," you're actually talking about possible jeopardy to human health stemming from awful factory-farm practices or poor quality control w.r.t. suppliers -- so price is (by and large) an indicator of a very meaningful qualitative difference. Not at all the same scenario as with wine.
Cyranix··on Google Reader Apocalypse Extremely Fucking Nigh
NewsBlur is also YC S12. I can't say I've tried them all to compare fairly, but I'm quite pleased with NewsBlur for my feed-reading needs. Samuel Clay has been quite responsive to the few GitHub issues I've filed, too.

Same thing in Java -- if there's a class named something commonplace like "Transaction" or "Connection", it's going to be pretty critical to understand whose implementation that refers to.

Cyranix··on NeDB, a pure Javascript database for Node.js and Node Webkit
Perfect timing. I spun up a project fairly recently using node-webkit and wanted this, exactly. Getting SQLite integrated wasn't particularly painful, but a document storage model is just what I had hoped for. Thanks for the contribution; looking forward to giving it a try!
