CyberRabbi··on On Being Disappeared
At some point in the development of democracies, free speech will be recognized as a civil right. For now, as long as it’s a private company, your right to free speech can be ignored.
CyberRabbi··on A userspace WireGuard client that exposes itself as a proxy
I love wireguard but my one gripe with it is that its not a true data link layer. You have to give it routing information through an out of band mechanism “AllowedIPs.” One downside is that you can’t have two peers that act as general routers on the same wireguard network. With Ethernet, you can have multiple nodes in the same subnet acting as generic routers, it’s just a matter of sending IP packets to that host.

I hope someday wireguard addresses this issue and makes itself fully transparent as a data link layer.

CyberRabbi··on A Way Out for A.out
If I want to run these binaries on my daily driver, it’s much easier if I don’t have to start up a VM. I want the latest Linux kernel on my daily driver for hopefully self-evident reasons.
CyberRabbi··on A Way Out for A.out
If your point is that a.out support makes kernels worse for everyone else, you can simply compile it out and it will not affect you.

The issue is keeping the code in tree. Its inclusion doesn’t affect the quality of the kernel, its just a maintenance burden.

CyberRabbi··on A Way Out for A.out
Because new kernels are better than old kernels.
CyberRabbi··on Wasmer and Trademarks
This is often repeated but it’s just obviously not true. It’s much easier to figure out how to exploit a server if I have its source. If I don’t, I have to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and hope something sticks.

If I’m in the situation where I have a binary of a server without the source, I have to pay the cost of using ghidra or IDA for a few hours or days (or weeks) to figure out how the software is structured before I can come up with an exploit. If I’m dealing with an open source target that’s a cost I don’t have to pay.

CyberRabbi··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
Why not? You can ssh into it and also run X applications in your Macos session.
CyberRabbi··on Minimum Viable Declarative GUI in C++
That’s a great requirement for any C++ GUI library. It must support a runtime GUI model. Ideally it would seamlessly support a compile-time model as well but I’m not sure there is a strong argument for the increased complexity in that case.
CyberRabbi··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
Run Linux in a vm on macOS.
CyberRabbi··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
> it's MacOS interface for linux

If this is something you want I recommend you just use macOS. It will always be the best macOS experience.

CyberRabbi··on George Hotz against the institutions
Nowhere in this thread is there an argument or dispute over Stallman’s status.
CyberRabbi··on George Hotz against the institutions
That’s interesting that you came away with the impression that Stallman is replaceable from my comment given my comment states in literal terms that Stallman crafted an idea that changed the world. What specific part of my comment gave you the impression that he’s replaceable?
CyberRabbi··on George Hotz against the institutions
Nowhere in my comment is there a suggestion that RMS is a “normal human.” If your intention is not to refute my comment but to add unrelated info, then thank you for that info.
CyberRabbi··on George Hotz against the institutions
Interesting discussion of AI and the decline of civilization. His allergies to power are a bit naive though not completely unfounded, at least Stallman comes to mind as an example of someone who was able to change the course of history without much personal power, instead he crafted ideas that had power. Some ideas are powerful enough to compel enough people to act in line with them. Ultimately accomplishing anything at a large scale requires large scale cooperation. Whether the reason is money, submission to authority, or ideological conviction.
CyberRabbi··on It’s Like GPT-3 but for Code – Fun, Fast, and Full of Flaws
The logical conclusion of your position is a de facto situation in which only private corporations get to enjoy intellectual property rights. It’s easy to steal from free software developers but if you steal anything from a corporation your life will be ruined.
CyberRabbi··on It’s Like GPT-3 but for Code – Fun, Fast, and Full of Flaws
Until the Copilot product is accessible to the public on the same terms as the free software on which it is based, it is another example of corporate exploitation of the commons, or, in other words, open theft.

If it separately becomes a long term trend for private companies to use neural net regurgitation to allow them to use free software without complying with the GPL, free software must be completely abandoned.

CyberRabbi··on Random number generator enhancements for Linux 5.17 and 5.18
Probably expose a random device.
CyberRabbi··on Random number generator enhancements for Linux 5.17 and 5.18
I haven’t looked into it but from what I’ve read from various sources, not every platform can extract entropy from that process. I took that to mean that the CPUs on which the jitter dance is employed are not entirely “deterministic.” Well of course they are but they must be carrying black box state that affects execution that, so far, is impossible to extract without knowing the full execution trace up to that point.

Can anyone provide a specific explanation for why some of platforms can extract entropy from scheduling jitter and others can’t?

CyberRabbi··on Ask HN: How to prove that astrology works?
1) Make a survey that classifies respondents into one of the 12 astrological signs

2) give it to a lot of people, the more the better

3) also collect their birthdays

4) do a regression analysis to determine how well the sign based on birthday predicts the sign based on the survey response

5) profit

Good luck

CyberRabbi··on LibreTube main devs account has been suspended by GitHub without any reasons
Why is it so hard for people to understand that if they want to access to basic services on the internet they have to conform to normal behavior standards?
CyberRabbi··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
I’m confused. If you don’t think it’s easy why would you laugh? I thought you were trying to tell me it’s so easy and trivial that it’s not worth mentioning, which might be true for you but it’s definitely not true for everyone.
CyberRabbi··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
> Because that's easy to do for everyone

Is it? I don’t think it is. Why do you think it is?

CyberRabbi··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
Generally, the best time to invest is precisely when everyone else is pessimistic about the market. When I say invest, I mean true investing. Long time horizon.

Like others have said, that’s aside from the point. You are more likely to lose than gain by timing the market. That’s what the GP is getting at.

CyberRabbi··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
If you have a stable job and a fixed mortgage you’ll be okay regardless of inflation. Inflation really only affects those who hold debt or hold cash. As public inflation numbers increase, make sure you are getting a commensurate increase in salary.

What? Why don’t you report this bug or submit a patch. If you have, can you link me to your report or patch?

> Malone knowingly lied about safety, making claims he knew were untrue at the time he made them and continued to do so.

What is your source for this? Aren’t you assuming bad faith?

Regardless I think you are missing the point. Dissent by definition will not have to conform to your worldview or notions of what is true or who is considered a scientist. If you only allow things which your worldview considers true, that is not real dissent. Twitter does not permit real dissent on their platform.

There was a time when the claims Galileo was making about the sun were not considered true nor were they acknowledged by scientists. Really consider that.

> Had he simply said “I don’t agree with this” his account would still be active like all of the other people who do this.

No, if I tweeted “I do not agree that the vaccines are safe enough.” I would get banned. How do I know this? Because I tweeted this and I was banned from Twitter. You’re not being honest.

CyberRabbi··on Twitter's new Tor onion service
> Nobody is being banned for dissent, they're having incorrect claims challenged and removed from sources like Wikipedia

Dissent is disagreement. People are in fact and explicitly being banned for disagreeing with the official information on COVID vaccines. Science is always changing and dissent is necessary to advancing our understanding of the world, whether it ends up being correct or not. When you ban people for “misinformation” you are impeding the scientific process.

allegedly still buggy :)
