CrossVR··on Biomolecular shifts occur in our 40s and 60s (2024)
Ultimately as much as we love individual responsibility, the truth is only the lucky few have the ability to freely choose their lifestyle. For the rest of us we have to conform to the unhealthy lifestyle that society demands of us.

To live a life that's even remotely healthy we have to dedicate a significant amount of the precious spare time we have just to undo some of that damage.

I do not believe we are predisposed to adopt sedentary lifestyles. As kids most of us are very active, but we are taught to be sedentary. Both academically and professionally we are most rewarded for sedentary activities: doing extra coursework, building your resume. Is it any surprise we develop a sedentary lifestyle when such a lifestyle is most rewarded?

CrossVR··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
> As I’ll explain, the fake buffering is 80% of the length of the ads you would’ve seen, so even with fake buffering you’re still saving time using an adblocker.

I don't care if the fake buffering is 100% of the ad length. Not having to see the pre-roll ad and no ad breaks during the video is worth the wait.

CrossVR··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
Oh I take it seriously and I also agree that in the US there's a large population that's sent to prison for no good reason, with almost no attention paid to rehabilitation and treatment.

However I have doubts that, when people who hold that position come to power, El Chapo will be walking free with no restrictions the next morning.

Some form of restriction of movement will be required for frequent violent offenders. You may abolish the old system since you believe it's rotten to the core and you may call whatever replaces it something other than prison, but it will still be prison.

CrossVR··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
> prison abolition

Can we stop calling reform abolishment? I know it's more fun to call it abolishment because it triggers the people you disagree with, but it's entirely counter-productive.

I'm just getting so tired of these constant motte and bailey fallacies in US political discourse.

CrossVR··on How we reduced the impact of zombie clients
Nowhere in the blog post does it say they can't cope with the load, which is why the rate limits are so high. This is only about reducing wasted resources by blocking requests which are never going to succeed.
CrossVR··on Why old games never die, but new ones do
Yet the obscure forgotten stuff is still playable if you kept a copy of the disc. Those games didn't need a community to preserve them, because they were not designed to be ephemeral like live service games.
CrossVR··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
Or, hear me out, a life without caffeine is still worth living.
CrossVR··on NSA spied through Angry Birds, other apps: report (2014)
I once asked a VP of engineering at a major ISP why they don't add a layer of encryption to their peering and customer connections to prevent spy agencies from tapping their fibre cables. I was expecting him to say it would be too expensive to upgrade all their network hardware given the amount of traffic. Instead he said: "our routers can already do that, but the government regulator stepped in and prevented us from turning it on."
CrossVR··on The Homebrew Channel repository is archived (Apr 28, 2025)
Homebrew is a general term for software written by hobbyists and is mostly used in the context of running such software on a locked-down system.
CrossVR··on My imaginary children aren't using your streaming service
The problem isn't that the Netflix button will make them break down into tears. The problem is that the daily confrontation just brings the mood down.

They're just sitting down for a relaxing movie or series and the first thing that comes up is the question: "You don't have kids right?"

CrossVR··on Knowing where your engineer salary comes from
Running companies like this is how you end up with the current state of Boeing. Only valuing engineers who are directly earning you profit and firing the ones who only have an indirect role in your profit centers.

> If your work isn’t clearly connected to company profit, your position is unstable

You know what really makes your position unstable as an engineer? Delaying a product over "safety" concerns, thereby doing work that's clearly connected to preventing company profit. Only young, bright-eyed engineers would be naive enough to bring up safety concerns right?

CrossVR··on Using fake deadlines without driving your engineers crazy
If you using fake deadlines to stress employees and force them to go the extra mile and do crunch time to meet those deadlines then that's worker exploitation.
CrossVR··on How AI is creating a rift at McKinsey, Bain, and BCG
He didn't say that because he was a moron, in that context it sounds more like a threat to me.
CrossVR··on Convert Linux to Windows
> While the Linux syscalls themselves are very stable and reliable, the c library on top of them is not. Practically all of userland is based on libc, and therefore by proxy Linux itself has a binary compatibility problem.

People who primarily use Linux often forget that Windows has the exact same problem. In the case of Windows libc is distributed as part of the Visual C++ runtime. Each version of Visual Studio has its own version of the VC++ runtime and the application is expected to redistribute the version of VC++ it needs.

The only thing Windows does better is ensuring that they maintain backwards compatibility in libc until they release a new version of Visual Studio.

CrossVR··on Upcoming Windows 11 builds cannot install without internet and Microsoft Account
And for what? Make number go up? If it's just another data collection scheme the at least I could understand why.
CrossVR··on I genuinely don't understand why some people are still bullish about LLMs
The point is that given the current valuations, being good at a bunch of narrow use cases is just not good enough. It needs to be able to replace humans in every role where the primary output is text or speech to meet expectations.
CrossVR··on HDMI Musings: YCbCr color subsampling, Dolby Vision MEL/FEL, and and5V injection
One note missing from the YCbCr color space explanation is that, while HDMI does support YCbCr, the spec requires all video sources to also offer an RGB stream. Thus it is not possible to use HDMI for a device that can only output YCbCr.
CrossVR··on 'Naive' science fan faces jail for plutonium import
Given that this guy was charged under a non-proliferation act it makes a massive difference whether it's Pu-238 or Pu-239.
CrossVR··on In Jail Without a Lawyer: How a Texas Town Fails Poor Defendants
> Now you better not lose because you are on the hook for all of the money the court wants to believe it cost them to prosecute you.

In a criminal case you aren't liable for the legal costs of the prosecution. I think you're confusing criminal court with civil court.

CrossVR··on The Road Not Taken Is Guaranteed Minimum Income
Sure that's an if, but the effects of inflation certainly exacerbates that inequality. Thus the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. It's just a question of cause and effect.
CrossVR··on The Road Not Taken Is Guaranteed Minimum Income
We're talking about the poor here, not the middle class. A lot of states haven't raised their minimum wage above the federal minimum wage, which hasn't been raised since 2009.

Also even if wages go up inflation still reduces the wealth owned by the middle class. Especially given that interest rates on savings hasn't kept pace with inflation for decades. So unless you own a house or a stock portfolio even the middle class gets poorer due to inflation.

CrossVR··on The Road Not Taken Is Guaranteed Minimum Income
> rich getting richer means poor getting poorer

If the rich getting richer drives up inflation then that does indeed mean that the poor get poorer.

CrossVR··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
I feel sorry for Apple users who advocate for a more open ecosystem as they are always met with outright hostility and told they should stop using Apple. As if you don't deserve to use Apple hardware if you don't agree with everything that Apple does.
CrossVR··on Recommendations for designing magic numbers of binary file formats
The magic number isn't about recognizing specific versions. That's just an added benefit if you choose to add that to the magic number.

It is to solve the problem of how to build a file manager that can efficiently recognize all the file types in a large folder without relying on file name extensions.

If you don't include a magic number a file manager would need to attempt to parse the file format before it can determine which file type it is.

CrossVR··on Recommendations for designing magic numbers of binary file formats
At first I wasn't sure why it contained a separate Unix line feed when you would already be able to detect a Unix to DOS conversion from the DOS line ending:

0D 0A 1A 0A -> 0D 0D 0A 1A 0D 0A

But of course this isn't to try and detect a Unix-to-DOS conversion, it's to detect a roundtrip DOS-to-Unix-to-DOS conversion:

0D 0A 1A 0A -> 0A 1A 0A -> 0D 0A 1A 0D 0A

Certainly a very well thought-out magic number.

CrossVR··on Recommendations for designing magic numbers of binary file formats
I think preventing the opposite is more pressing. Imagine creating a text file and it just so happens that the first 8 characters match a magic number of an image format. Now when you go back to edit your text file it is suddenly recognized as an image file by your file browser.
CrossVR··on "It has been determined" that infected dairy herd serology can be disclosed
Woah, I'm not sure how you got that from my comment. It was a genuine question since OP made it seem as if Dr. Fauci had played some role in the USDA's handling of the H5N1 epidemic. In fact I was concerned OP was trying to pin yet another conspiracy on him.
CrossVR··on "It has been determined" that infected dairy herd serology can be disclosed
> Post Fauci, it's huge.

How is Anthony Fauci related to this? He headed the NIAID, not the USDA.

CrossVR··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
> And despite all the discussions, I still cannot remember (or find) that dependence from Russia was even in the top-5 of arguments from either side

The Nord Stream pipeline was completed in 2011, the same year Merkel decided to accelerate the phase out of nuclear. The US had repeatedly warned against constructing the pipeline because of energy dependence on Russia.

Everyone knew that apart from coal Germany has no energy resources. Given that it wouldn't be possible to meet climate goals with coal the energy would need to come from either the newly constructed pipeline or renewables.

That the newly created energy dependence would give power to dictatorships may not have been at the forefront of the public's mind. But treating it as something unknowable without hindsight lets the politicians who caused this travesty off too easy. If Merkel had been honest to the public about the potential consequences of her decision, perhaps it would've been a part of the debate.

CrossVR··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
> In hindsight, it was premature by Germany to shut down theirs so early

What hindsight? Everyone knew at the time that it was premature. It was a deliberate choice to bear the burden of increased pollution and to make the country more dependent on the whims of a foreign dictator, because nuclear bad.
