Crontab··on Goodbye to a 15-year-old Debian server
I love reading stuff like this. Thanks for posting the link OP.
Crontab··on Why OpenBSD Rocks
> There's no filesystem journal

That's one that has been sticking out to me lately. Both NetBSD and OpenBSD, as much as I like them, lack a modern filesystem..

Crontab··on Why OpenBSD Rocks
I installed Debian on a virtual machine the other day and, frankly, it felt a lot like using Solaris: a weird init system paired with unintuitive commands for manipulating network interfaces. All that said, it worked well in my testing, and I would use when hardware or software compatibility demanded it.
Crontab··on Apple moves to store iCloud keys in China, raising human rights fears
Indeed, this article also could have been titled "Apple obeys the law of countries that it does business in", but it wouldn't have been as attention getting.
Crontab··on Are dark themes bad for your eyes? Alan Kay seems to think so
Agreed. When I worked in CIC/CDC, it was always darkened, and a white interface would have been super annoying.
Crontab··on RIAA Lawyers Botched a Big One Against flvto.biz – So What’s Next?
Wouldn’t that result in transcoding from one lossy audio format to another? I’ve always been advised against that.
Crontab··on Dotfile madness
I personally detest the whole XDG thing but lots of non-XDG applications are guilty of littering the home directory. For example, every time I use the Less pager, it creates a .lesshst file (fixable by setting "LESSHISTFILE" to "-"). Vim creates .viminfo files so I had to create an alias to it where vim equals "vim -i NONE".
Crontab··on Fedora, UUIDs, and user tracking
I don't mind Fedora wanting to get counts of things, provided it is exclusively an opt-in feature. Debian's 'popcon' is an example of doing it right.
Crontab··on Hospitals release lists of retail prices for services
This has been my experience as well. The one time I had to go to the hospital while uninsured, while in-between jobs, they immediately tried to negotiate a settlement with me.

This has made me wonder what the point of these high prices are if no one ever pays them. My guess has always been that it has something to do with tax write-offs for the services that they never recoup.

Crontab··on GoDaddy injecting JavaScript into websites and how to stop it
It is kind of sad how every single web-based technology is turned against us. I shudder to think what they will be able to do with Web Assembly.
Crontab··on Mickey Mouse and Batman will soon be public domain
The intersection between the public domain and trademarks is pretty interesting.

For example, Marvel Comics recently paid to re-obtain the rights to publish Conan comic books, even though the character and original stories are in the public domain. This result is perverse, in my opinion.

Crontab··on FSF receives two major surprise end-of-year donations
The linked article doesn't say anything about "end-of-year". But it does refer to the donations as a "surprise".
Crontab··on DragonFly BSD 5.4
LOL, you might be right about that. I am guilty of treating my laptop like a desktop with a built-in UPS.
Crontab··on DragonFly BSD 5.4
I would say that your experience isn't typical. OpenBSD has an excellent reputation of Thinkpads.
Crontab··on DragonFly BSD 5.4
NetBSD is older than FreeBSD.
Crontab··on DragonFly BSD 5.4
I personally don't like the idea of FreeBSD being downstream from a project that can't even be included with the OS it is being designed for.
Crontab··on Corel confirms it has acquired virtualization specialist Parallels
They are the Yahoo of software companies.
Crontab··on DragonFly BSD, version 5.4, has been released
Very nice. I've been playing with DF in a virtual machine over the past week and it seems very nice - although I think the Hammer2 command could be more useful.
Crontab··on Apple in Violation of Their Own License?
That would depend. If the contributor retained their copyright and didn’t assign it, then you couldn’t commerialize closed versions of it without their permission.
Crontab··on AWS Transfer for SFTP – Fully Managed SFTP Service for Amazon S3
I've never even heard of FTP over SSL. Is that something that never became popular due to the existence of OpenSSH?
Crontab··on Nnn – a terminal file manager for programmers
Just noticed you mentioned 2.1 and Homebrew installed 2.0. That is probably why I am not seeing it.
Crontab··on Nnn – a terminal file manager for programmers
I am testing Nnn via Homebrew and I am also missing the ability to delete. The in-program help lists '^X' as Quit.

Is anyone else who installed via Homebrew able to delete?

Crontab··on Ask HN: Older textbooks/papers you consider classics still worth studying today?
"The Unix Programming Environment" would be my choice. Love it.
Crontab··on OpenZFS vs. Btrfs and other file systems (2017)
I have read a number of people talking about ECC and ZFS and the general consensus I have gleaned is the ECC is nice to have but not required.
Crontab··on Microsoft Is Putting Ads on the Mail App in Windows 10
I've avoided Ubuntu since the Amazon-search issue, so I haven't tested 18.04 personally, but the second article I linked to says:

"This data collection is turned on by default"

I took this to mean that telemetry was being collected and, if someone desired, could be turned off after the fact. I have a problem with telemetry being opt-out (it should always be opt-in). If Ubuntu is prompting to allow or disallow the collection of data, then that is good news, as people are being asked for their informed consent.

Crontab··on Microsoft Is Putting Ads on the Mail App in Windows 10
I used to think that being open-source was enough to avoid being spied on but it is not. Ubuntu showed this with the Amazon search issue [1] and is apparently collecting telemetry with 18.04 LTS [2]. My understanding is that Brew also gatherings telemetry by default.

Enabling telemetry collection as the default setting needs to end - even if it is well intentioned.

Crontab··on Ask HN: Command Line History
Hello again.

I like the idea of unsetting HISTFILE to a avoid saving sensative commands. That probably works on most shells.

Crontab··on Intel announces Cascade Lake Xeons: 48 cores and 12-channel memory per socket
Don’t underestimate AMD’s ability to shoot itself in the foot.
Crontab··on Intel announces Cascade Lake Xeons: 48 cores and 12-channel memory per socket
Finally, a CPU that can keep up with Google Chrome!
Crontab··on I ditched the Mac for the iPad, and I’ll never go back
I like the iPad as a secondary device but the lack of user freedom and true file management would be an issue for me if it was my only computer.
