Crazyontap··on Remote code execution in cdnjs of Cloudflare
There is probably no good reason to use such CDNs nowadays:

1) The biggest benefit of using cdn was that scripts stylesheets were often loaded from cache. This is no longer the case anymore.

2) It's adding an unnecessary vulnerability as seen from this case.

3) CDN scripts can be (possibly) used to track your website traffic.

4) They often drop third party cookies which decreases your website load speed among other things.

It's best to just host your script on Digital ocean spaces or S3 and use a Cloudfront proxy.

Crazyontap··on Petite-Vue – 5kb subset of Vue optimized for progressive enhancement
Here is the link to it:

https://www.vuemastery.com/courses/vue3-deep-dive-with-evan-...

Sorry but it is locked as it's part of the paid course :(

Crazyontap··on Petite-Vue – 5kb subset of Vue optimized for progressive enhancement
If anyone of you guys have access to Vue mastery watch the tutorial where Evan creates a mini-version of Vue js in vanilla JS in like 15 minutes.

He also explains some of the Vue optimization tricks like why they ditched the nested JSON and how Vue caches the @click handlers, etc so they don't need to check this on every digest cycle.

I wish there was a free version to link here. Really interesting stuff, shows you how much thought and effort is put in by the creators to optimise so many little things which us users of the framework never even notice is happening.

Crazyontap··on Purelymail – cheap, no-nonsense email
How do you do spam blocking?

I think Gmail really shines at this. It's one of the reason I was thinking of switching to Hey email also, though after reading Hey's reviews I've decided not to. So anyway, would love some comments from users or you about how good you are at separating the wheat from the chaff.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: How to learn how to sell?
Sorry I don't follow. When did I or the book say anything about lying to people?

Could it be not possible that a product can actually help a person get what s/he wants? Or be the best thing to suit their needs. Do you have an objection to that statement?

I actually believe my product is the best fit for my target (not everybody but a very small niche of few thousand people in this world). When I find those persons it indeed feels very easy to sell my product to them and also get repeat business.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: How to learn how to sell?
I would suggest reading Grant cardones Sell or Be sold. Don't like the guy but the book is really good.

The number 1 thing I learned from this book was you have to learn that selling is basically helping people and #2 that your product is the best thing for your customer, i.e. you should be convinced that there is nothing better in the world at the moment to help your customer.

When you truly and honestly believe that selling becomes easy.

Crazyontap··on On Depression and Founders
Man this comment is scary af for me. I mean I don't know you from adam but getting to the success at the end of the rainbow is what makes me jump out of bed each morning and not want to go to bed each night.

It's my dream that consumes me and keeps me happy more than anything else. But I too sometimes feel that "what happens after it's done" and it is not everything I imagine it to be. What if the bag of dreams we're all chasing is just empty like this Alan watts video(1).

Call it denial but I just try not to think about it a lot as I don't know what the future holds and it's pointless to speculate right now as every person is different. But reading your comment did scare me a little tbh!

Crazyontap··on BuzzFeed News Has Won Its First Pulitzer Prize
> They ultimately identified more than 260 structures that appeared to be fortified detention camps. Some of the sites were capable of holding more than 10,000 people and many contained factories where prisoners were forced into labor.

All BuzzFeed jokes aside, this is an exceptional piece of journalism. They managed to identify the exact spots where China was holding the Uyghurs, Kazakhs. "They began with an enormous dataset of 50,000 locations. Buschek built a custom tool to sort through those images."

In a time when even mentioning anything remotely to China can get you in really hot waters, kudos to them for pursuing such news.

Crazyontap··on iOS 15 Humane
Even though this article is sarcastic(?) I can't help but get genuinely angry at these trillion dollar companies thinking they know what is better for us and trying to control and police everything. This is even worse than govt censoring porn and cuss-words back in the day thinking they know what is moral for the society.

I was just talking to a friend the other day on how badly Apple and Google are trying their best to kill curiosity and creativity. I mean when I first got my 286 the machine was just full of possibilities. I think learning the ins and outs of it was more fun than doing anything productive.

I used to hack away at it all day and night. Learning about interrupts, tinkering with the BIOS settings, hacking the serial port, irq, etc. Now everything is just locked down. In my latest phone I can't even run `fastboot` as that too has been locked down permanently because "security".

Thank god we have Linux created before all this Bullshit started happening. If Apple, Google and Microsoft was in charge of things as they are now, we wouldn't even have any hardware to run anything else than Windows and iOS.

Crazyontap··on Introducing chrome.scripting
One thing I've often found strange about Chrome and extensions is how there is no support for it in the mobile version and it's been downloaded 1B+ times and nobody complains about it.

While the capability for running extensions on mobile chrome has always been there and is quite evident with the chrome forks like "Kiwi browser" which runs every chrome extension including ublock just fine.

It only shows how Google must have deliberately decided to purposely never support extensions on mobile from day one.

I mean it's much harder to give something and take it back, so you generally phase out functionality out by citing security issues and that's what I think is this whole v3 fiasco is all about too.

Crazyontap··on Italian Artist Auctions Off an ‘Invisible Sculpture’ for $18,300
If this was a publicity stunt I'd say it's working quite well.
Crazyontap··on Google Groups has banned comp.lang.tcl
Wow if getting a group banned is that easy, then it's more like a vulnerability because the same can be scaled up and get almost any group banned (as the banning is also automatic as I see in another comment below).
Crazyontap··on Show HN: An experimental, people-powered search engine
I read on HN or maybe reddit don't remember that there are people on the internet who solve captchas all day and night for you for like $0.01. It could make more sense to have them do this instead. It could be actually useful for people with disabilities, or people who type urls in google, etc.
Crazyontap··on Charlie Bit My Finger video to be taken off YouTube after selling for £500k
Yes, this and Bitcoin both feel like pyramid schemes.

There is a lot of initial investment from top-tier people who convince others to invest (by showing eye-popping returns) and drive more investment. Soon the people on the top-tier gradually cash out and eventually it's the common people who lost their hard-earned money.

Crazyontap··on Monetizing open-source is problematic
Looks like this hasn't happened to him for the first time either. First page results for faker.js show how he has been ripped off before too(1). Really sad how big companies abuse OSS.

Crazyontap··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
I think a framework on an existing language would be a much choice instead of learning a totally new language just for this.
Crazyontap··on Engineer Who Won the Nobel Prize Twice in Physics
> Their relationship, however, soured when Shockley tried to take most of the credit for the invention.

The article mentions BBT and one the constant jokes on it is whose name goes first and who gets the most credit. Guess some scientists really are that way! :)

Crazyontap··on My Favorite One Liners
I sometimes wish there was a linux command that when piped into turned anything into json readable format, so `ps | json-pipe` would output something like [{pid: 133, name, etc}, ...] or `ls | json-pipe` would turn into [{name, size, etc}].

It would handle most known commands and maybe had plugin support for the rest.

Just a thought I had. Don't really know if it's possible or feasible. But it would make working with command line much more predictable and easier especially if it also supported jmespath! What do you guys think?

Crazyontap··on Show HN: Appleshouter – iOS Push Notifications for PWAs and Web apps
Apple has no incentive to make PWA or web apps work natively since they don't get their 30% cut on that.

Steve jobs made it abundantly clear when he blocked Flash on iOS citing battery and security reasons and every developer including myself hailed it as the best thing that could to the internet then; never figuring out the insidiousness of such changes and how it was a priority for Apple to cripple the web browser and keep it crippled to make their App store flourish and get more % cut on apps. They have made billions of dollars doing that and Steve jobs was truly a visionary in this regard.

Crazyontap··on Why we switched from Webpack to Vite
First of all thank you for writing so many useful open-source software.

Anyway since you are here is there any reason why Vite won't run with Vue 2.x? I tried Vue 3 with Vite and I was blown away how much dev time it saves. No startup time, no compile time.. but we have thousand and thousands of line of Vue 2 that isn't going to be ported to V3 anytime soon and it kills me that I have to waste so much time looking at webpack compiling all the vue files everytime I load it.

Is this technically impossible to make Vite work with Vue 2 or is it because the community has moved away from V2 and don't want to spend any time on V2 tooling? Thanks.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of releases/deployments of dozens micro-services?
Any plans for showing user's birthday on the settings page?

Sorry, I'm just kidding but that's the only thing I could think off when I heard the number 200!

Crazyontap··on I made a site to explore the best UI/UX design tools out there
I instantly thought it was a parody website for what the websites have come to nowadays. Where is the cookie popup? Where is my back button hijacking? Where is my adblock warning!?
Crazyontap··on My experience releasing failed SaaS products
DHH posted this in 2009 on "Learning from failure is overrated"

His main point being You might know what won’t work, but you still don’t know what will work. That’s not much of a lesson.

Crazyontap··on What I learnt after burning $10M as an entrepreneur
Also it's so damn slow. Feels like it downloads a movie in bluray quality when I log in.

I've had so many friends complain the same, why don't they fix it and why do companies force us to use this :(

Crazyontap··on The solution of the Zodiac killer’s 340-character cipher
I really like New Zealand's policy(1) to not name the killers and not giving them any validation at all.

While the puzzle has been solved and it turned out to be real mind bender, it may be the end result that that killer may have wanted all along.

There is so much buzz around it (movie, subreddits, forums, and whatnot) that it really bums me out that we gave such a heinous criminal so much time and attention.

(1) "He sought many things from his act of terror, but one was notoriety - that is why you will never hear me mention his name," Ms Ardern said in an emotional address at New Zealand's parliament.

Crazyontap··on How to price your SaaS product
One of the best advice that I've read on this very forum is always make sure that you start at $47 if that makes sense for your product.

The logic behind it is that a lot of businesses give employees the power to buy stuff under this $50 limit without having to get it approved from their boss/deptt.

Crazyontap··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
I sometimes wonder if Apple didn't come up with this model of charging devs 30% even Google wouldn't have too. These companies often end up with similar policies. But that one greedy kid showed everyone how easy it is to leech off on hard work of devs (who are also to be blame as we happily agreed to this BS) and now it's a common practice.

If safari browser had a Safari store with 30% cut pretty sure chrome extension store would also be charging 30% instead of their 5% now.

Crazyontap··on Google finally revealed how much personal data they collect in Chrome
I guess the majority of people on HN already know this more or less. The problem is still this: We still don't have good alternatives to Google's products and services.

1) Android: Google still owns all our phones. Even on rooted phones it hard to remove google services that god know send so many requests containing whatnot to the eeee addresses. Just install no-root firewall and you will be amazed the amount of pending requests that accumulate in 1 hour.

2) Google search: I guess I can manage with DDG but when it's not that straight forward search, subconciosuly I'm still thinking that let's just do a quick google search to see if i'm not missing anything. And often I find better results. While adblocks makes sure I filter most of the crap.

3) Gmail: Yes there are alternatives but switching emails is hard. It's a big commitment for most people to switch a 10 year old gmail address. And it still works great at filtering spam and whatnot.

And same for maps, youtube and all their services. They really have a big leverage on everyone.

Quiting facebook and instagram was child's play in comparison. I haven't logged in for almost an year now. Quitting google is really hard otoh.

Crazyontap··on Kotlin Compiler Crash Course
I really don't remember it was a long time ago but from what I recall there was just too much magic happening and things would break a lot of times because it was easy to make mistakes with it.

Come to think of maybe I didn't learn it well enough at that time and blamed it for my silly mistakes. CS did introduce a lot of good things like the fat arrow which was just amazing at that time.

Crazyontap··on Kotlin Compiler Crash Course
Sure it was this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_oGi8uuDpA (from history)

I guess I remember incorrectly it was 3 hours long. It is only 1hr few minutes and you can easily watch it at 2x speed.

But overall Youtube is a great resource for learning new things. If you search Kotlin crash course (filter by duration > 20min) you will find ton of such courses and you can easily judge them by number of likes/dislikes.

And make sure to watch it at 3x speed with subs ON initially (video speed controller for chrome). This is truly a great hack when learning tech things via video.
