CosmicShadow··on Tickets Are for Remembering
I've got a stub binder that started having print outs of tickets in it or post-it notes. When I would go back to see what I've been to and get a burst of nostalgia, I'd just get mad at the lack of ticket instead of the good memory. Having one that looks and feels like the real thing let me move on from that.

There are a lot of folks who feel like the object obtains some "magical aura" by physically being at a concert with you, and that's ok, but for me, it's just a way to remember the show and keep track of everything I've been to. I go to enough shows that a single ticket isn't like a massive special memento, which may be the case for the person who goes to like one show a year.

Gifting is huge for us as well as parties, retirements, anniversaries, you name it!

CosmicShadow··on Tickets Are for Remembering
Thanks, I appreciate it! After many startups and business ventures to not get anywhere, it was nice to have one finally hit, and one that I actually care about too!
CosmicShadow··on Tickets Are for Remembering
I definitely think it's a minority, but even so it's a very large group of people that liked to save tickets. It's why I made Stubforge, so I could keep adding tickets to my own collection. I've got a lot of repeat customers who have been able to keep their collections growing as well. Even if you don't look at them, it's a way to remember what you've been to in a consistent fashion.
CosmicShadow··on Tickets Are for Remembering
As someone who has been saving my ticket stubs for 20+ years I was very frustrated by the disappearance of physical tickets. I paid the extra fee to have them mailed to me, but eventually that went away. Printed emails are not the same.

I eventually figured out how to make the most realistic replica ticket stubs possible to add to my ticket stub album. I spent several thousands dollars on professional printers and real stock as well as months building my own software to customize and print tickets, all to scratch my own itch. Now my collection continues to grow with the 20 or so shows I go to every year and I've helped over 16,000+ people do the same with my website https://stubforge.com, which I'm now lucky enough to run full time.

A lot of people don't get it, and that's ok, but for those that do, they really get it.

People buy our tickets to give as gifts (because it's not easy to do anymore in a non-awkward or non-art project fashion), to add to their collections, to frame with posters, to use as surprise proposals, to invite people to their weddings, to announce their pregnancies and more things I never would have imagined when I started.

There are people that do miss ephemera. Even if you don't look at it that often, it's something precious to you. It doesn't matter if your kids will get it or just chuck it, it's there for you to enjoy and remember in the fashion that you want to.

I just cancelled my Midjourney subscription, it feels like it's fallen too far behind for the stuff I'd like to do. Spent a lot of time considering using Replicate as well as Ideogram.

Yep, pretty much just need to see (inc.com) and then ignore it.
CosmicShadow··on The Book of Kells, now digitized and available online
I saw the real life Book of Kells earlier this year and it was so pristine and high quality it didn't look real, like seriously looked like a modern fancy reprint, it was a bit confusing!
CosmicShadow··on Temu's semi-managed model could change everything
This is the company whose instagram ads show ridiculous stuff for like $17 and you think this has to be a scam, right? And their biggest market is boomers and gen x, those still most likely to fall for the scam or just say fuck it and order because they have income? And some how Temu is 10% of Meta's revenue, which tells you something.

I'm sure many of us have ordered from the el'cheapo Chinese 1 penny drop shipping sites and found out how you are getting like sub-dollar store quality, mostly broken or malware infected junk that might show up 6 months later to know better to bother trying again, but with that much advertising they are casting a wide net of folks who will keep falling for their ads. Also telling how much of their market is folks who make under 50k/year.

CosmicShadow··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Kind of concerning to see so much sketchbag behaviour from possibly the top AI company so consistently. Sure brings a lot of confidence in the future and sad that they can get away with it and still succeed because of the tech and their big names.

It feels like it took years before people started hating Google and Tesla, but these guys wasted very little time pretending to be good.

Do I still pay for and use them? Unfortunately yes, but I won't spend a second defending them or thinking they are trying to do anything remotely good, safe or ethical. Once things settle and hopefully someone else takes over, I can move my money elsewhere.

CosmicShadow··on GPT-4o
In the video where the 2 AI's sing together, it starts to get really cringey and weird to the point where it literally sounds like it's being faked by 2 voice actors off-screen with literal guns to their heads trying not to cry, did anyone else get that impression?

The tonal talking was impressive, but man that part was like, is someone being tortured or forced against their will?

My favourite part of the article is the Sabaton reference, just perfect timing.

Yeah, I don't hold a lot of money in there if I can help it, just until the rate seems favourable, then I convert it to CAD and send it off to my Canadian bank account for safer keeping as WISE is not FDIC protected.
CosmicShadow··on [dead]
Sorry, I meant after I've converted my USD to CAD in Wise, I can then send the CAD to my Canadian bank for like $0.66
CosmicShadow··on [dead]
I definitely love using Wise for my business. As a Canadian I can collect USD (which my shops charge in) and hold it for free as opposed to the fees my bank would charge and I don't get hit with conversion fees on every deposit. I can convert it at far better rates for way cheaper than my Canadian bank too. I confronted my major bank in person and they won't match their rates or even come close. I can transfer money from WISE to my Canadian bank for $0.66 and it takes like a day or less with 2 clicks. I also get a USD based credit card for free I can use and not get screwed on fees by conversion or my Canadian bank. Big fan here so far!

Is it hard to remember the one password you use for all Google services everyone's already been doing forever and will still have to do for every other site? When's the last time anyone even had to log into Google on any device? I'm signed in everywhere all the time and it almost never seems to expire...

CosmicShadow··on Samsung sees 95% drop in profits for a second consecutive quarter
Hmm, they keep making phones more expensive and taking away features that you used to get for free, like access to SD card and headphone jack so you have to pay more to them for a worse experience. I really want the fold, but it's still way too fucking expensive, even as a business expense, I just can't justify it, and the outer screen sizing was never fixed, so it's gimped. Do I need a folding phone? Not really, but I want one. I want something different and cool and a bigger screen on demand seems awesome. I played with 4 at Best Buy and was blown away. But yeah, priced stupidly. I'll just have to keep plugging away on my S9+ with the replaced battery that still supports my expensive wired ear buds and my free memory expansion.

CosmicShadow··on Next.js is the most frustrating, opinionated mess I've ever had to deal with
I've been using it for years and it's something where you need to learn what it's for and how to use those parts properly (static vs server), but once you get that figured out it's pretty quick to do a lot of things well. I haven't tried the new app directory or server components yet to make things even faster as why break something that works good enough. I think to take advantage of them you have to really understand the advantages and weaknesses of what came before them and why you would want to do the new thing.

Forcing NextJs to do something it's not meant to do (which I spent months doing last year) is not fun and leads to frustrating and wheel spinning, but doing what it's supposed to do I feel like I can spin up something so fast and easily and deploy to Vercel quickly and have a full web app in no time that has amazing speed. I wish they had a tier above pro, but below enterprise though for those who make a living off using it, but can't justify $1000/month just so someone will answer a phone call or email as to why their platform is failing with no errors and now you can't earn a living.

CosmicShadow··on 'BlackBerry' review: The comedy and tragedy of the innovator's dilemma
It was and still is the coolest device, holding it sideways and scrolling with your thumb, it was so light and perfectly sized, the battery lasted for DAYS. I really want another phone like it, but everything now is the same, except for the foldables, which intrigue me just because I want something different and new. It's too bad the bigger ones are so expensive.

CosmicShadow··on $3.4B in stolen Bitcoin hidden in Cheetos tin and underground safe
I'm kind of confused. 10 years ago a guy stole from an illegal underground operation and today, years later after it was shutdown, someone form the government finally found them and brought them to justice?

Who reported the crime and who's justice is the government doing this for? "Ring Ring" ... "Ross, you got a call from the government" ... "Hello Mr. Ulbricht, we'd like to let you know that we finally caught the thief that stole from you, justice has been served, I hope this brings you some peace as you carry on your life sentence."

Like...WHAT?! Or did the government just want to seize the money? Maybe I'm missing context on who this guy was, but the article just makes it sound like some guy who managed to scam an illegal marketplace. Like it seems like such a waste of time to track such a random thing down, unless they were working on punishing every person who ever interacted with that site?

CosmicShadow··on DuckDuckGo Launches DuckAssist
This just seems like a faster way to infect people with incorrect information. I mean every result returned will soon enough just be AI generated articles with that incorrect information, and you are saving us a step from clicking, but I'm getting sick of seeing this stuff.

If you can't do the job right and make sure the answer is right, then you shouldn't be publishing anything, or you are just damaging people and eroding trust. Returning search results in a fuzzy way I can't understand or fault you for is one thing and gives you plausible deniability, but not this. I'm all for Google alternatives (I use DDG), but this is definitely a turn off. Put the time into finding the right search result that actually has an accurate answer and just point me to that as the first result. Hell add a sublink that points to the actual answer on that page below the main result, but get rid of the gimmick that is AI.

Less hallucination is still hallucination.

CosmicShadow··on SEC charges the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
How do you get away with defending tax fraud to the point where the fine is pointless? Does the SEC not get to keep the winnings to use for their future cases so they can hire a ton of lawyers? I guess the real problem is why are judges (presumably everywhere?) lettings companies and organizations get away with this or is there a specific set of judges that only handle SEC cases? Perhaps the first step to getting bigger fines is to just keep increasing fines across the board? Do they need to campaign to judges to remind them that financial crime is bad? How hard is it for anyone to understand that a fine is meaningless unless it hurts, no matter how big the number is? Do you really need more lawyers to prove that basic point? I guess you guys are stuck in a pretty crappy system, but then again I'm sure most places are :/
CosmicShadow··on SEC charges the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
I guess it just seems strange that if their job is to essentially take wrong-doers to court and win loads of money, even if those winnings are relatively small compared to what they should be, they would still both have a lot of lawyers on staff and a lot of money coming in (regardless of funding from the government) to pay for those lawyers and the more they fine, the more money they'd have to hire more lawyers? And they have no shortage of cases with no competitors? I get they are probably bogged down in infinite politically and bureaucratic BS, but still, seems like they should have an easy path to winning without asking for funding from anyone.
