CorvusCrypto··on Offline First – A Better HTML5 User Experience
Progressive Enhancement was laid out clearly actually so that basic content should be accessible to all web browsers and basic functionality should be accessible to all web browsers.

As for google, they also recommend using progressive enhancement and they even removed their ajax SE scheme posting about this wherein they even give a recommended trick for compatibility testing.

CorvusCrypto··on Offline First – A Better HTML5 User Experience
Depends, if you are content-driven and can generate and cache static HTML and that's all you need I say hell yes, send that only, give it an e-tag, call it a day. ezpz. I gave benefit of the doubt to the author though and imagined an application that utilizes a decent amount of data that changes fairly frequently. In this case I can see the want for reducing the actual data sent over the wire and moving to a microservice infrastructure for the data with minimal logic server-side.
CorvusCrypto··on Offline First – A Better HTML5 User Experience
I see the author's vision, but I have to say that I still favor progressive enhancement over this. Using javascript only assumes a lot about the user even in this modern age of web development.

Also as a nitpick, I would say don't make your data objects SINGLETONS, make them SINGLE INSTANCE.

EDIT: someone deleted their comment but brought up a good point that you can have progressive enhancement with this. Yes, however the author made it clear he favors the JS or nothing approach. And there's even this snippet:

>An offline first approach would be to move the entire MVC stack into client side code (aka our app) and to turn our server side component into a data only JSON API.

CorvusCrypto··on 2016 will be one second longer
Another damn off-by-one error :(

It's not just about the deaths, but also about the social and political events that have occurred. It can be argued that this has happened before at this frequency also and mass media is the culprit, but if the cultural impact is more awareness we should applaud it, not shy away. Annoying as they are, social media and memes offer a way to connect many to an idea and make things a bit more light-hearted as well.
CorvusCrypto··on Human Cells Eat Nanowires
My thought was immediately gone to using these nanowires to trigger excitatory bursts in localized areas of the brain, solving issues like microseizures (or possibly large scale seizures also) or performing extremely precise electrical therapy. However as the article says, these cells don't have the same transmembrane transport mechanisms (wrongly called phagocytosis by the article) they relied on so this would need more research, but the fact the wires can generate an electrical potential across the membrane is huge in itself and the rest can come.

However, the application of drug transport is also amazing. Currently a lot of research is performed on lipid transports (microbubbles, etc.) or capsule-like nanostructures to carry hydrophilic or oversized molecules across the cell membranes. Stimulation of membrane-mediated transport for any molecule just by attaching a chemically inert nanowire to them would be AMAZING.

CorvusCrypto··on Obscure C++ Features
Am I the only one that just cringed reading the keyword replacement section? To me the example given seemed absolutely crazy. Can anyone validate this usage of the "feature"? It just seems so off.
CorvusCrypto··on Godbolt: Enter C, get Assembly
It's just vectorizing calculations so that it's faster than pure iterative calculation. 64 bit version doesn't get this probably because that optimizer isn't SSE2 aware yet (just a guess I actually don't know) and can't do SIMD arithmetic with 2 64 bit floats
CorvusCrypto··on Godbolt: Enter C, get Assembly
was going to say this. It probably only does SSE and not SSE2. Therefore vectorization only happens for 32 bit ints.
CorvusCrypto··on I've been writing ring buffers wrong all these years
cheap is relative right? I mean a multiplication can be spread over shift and add/sub instructions whereas a mask is just one instruction I think right?
CorvusCrypto··on Bose Hearphones
Actually just getting some earplugs helps this. Will filter your noise and make it really easy to have a conversation at normal level with someone near you. Use this myself for sports events, sometimes lounges, and of course flights. They cost way less than these headphones and work just as well to quell the problem you have.

Or if you don't want to use earplugs, just plug your ears when someone is talking to you. Same effect really.

CorvusCrypto··on An idea for encrypted, verifiable voting
At least in California, this part is impossible to accomplish:

"And so long as the counties can protect their secret keys..."

CorvusCrypto··on Qt binding for Go with support for all major operating systems
was thinking this also. The language seems very well suited to GUI applications based on its internals and I would love to see what comes of it in this regard. moar bindings pls
CorvusCrypto··on A Very Simple Genetic Algorithm Written in Swift 3
starting from inside the arc4random call you have double float multiplication, then cast to uint32, then the arc4rand call, then the double cast for the uint32 result and then a double float division. this adds up in instructions.
CorvusCrypto··on A Very Simple Genetic Algorithm Written in Swift 3
btw was this after compiled to pyc?
CorvusCrypto··on A Very Simple Genetic Algorithm Written in Swift 3
good stuff. tbh though, only ~3x slowdown in scripting imo is pretty damn good 8)
CorvusCrypto··on A Very Simple Genetic Algorithm Written in Swift 3
stuff like this can't help

var n = Double(arc4random_uniform(UInt32(weightTotal * 1000000.0))) / 1000000.0

CorvusCrypto··on Donald Trump Is Elected President
We could anyway imo. Our "very core" of economic and tax policy is actually pretty flexible. Just look at how the markets have developed over the last several decades. Yes there will be pain, but I'd trade a little short-term pain with long-term benefit over short-term relief with long-term decline anyday.

Not to say Scandinavia has the best of everything, but regardless... Jag skulle vilja bo i skandinavien istället USA

CorvusCrypto··on Netflix Chaos Monkey Upgraded
I don't think even hiring top-notch devs would make this reality completely go away. Tools like this would likely put them in check too. And yeah same response on our internal chat here basically x)
CorvusCrypto··on Netflix Chaos Monkey Upgraded
Following in line with the jokes, it's like they looked at my company's production environment and said "Let's make that a tool!"
CorvusCrypto··on Becoming a CTO
yeah this I believe. I kind of figured the role would be widely-varying, but kind of hoped not. It's hard to know what to strive for when it's different at every company haha.
CorvusCrypto··on Becoming a CTO
Nah not at all. But I am saying that it's not gonna sway my decision when you bash a technology amidst many other companies that have successfully used the same technology. It just shows a lack of vision imo. My comment wasn't targeted at yours specifically, but was a follow up on the topic.

and imo explanation of why you use one technology over another is not equal to just a "PHP sucks!" blog post.

CorvusCrypto··on Becoming a CTO
Irrelevant to what I asked. I understand the role. And I can safely say I don't want it. What is the top engineering role?
CorvusCrypto··on Becoming a CTO
I can't for the life of me think of a reason this kind of blog post would make me want to join a company. If anything it shows the opposite quality of a CTO as mentioned in the article. Use what is suited to your needs, don't worry about appealing to the tech crowd. After all, even if PHP is shit, it's not your problem. Let us handle implementation of what you need, we will (or our lead dev will) help you understand pros and cons to certain technologies. Besides, for every article written about why PHP sucks, there's at least 5 PHP devs looking for work :P
CorvusCrypto··on Becoming a CTO
So then would the true top "Engineering" role just be lead dev? This is the role I am more interested in. Having to keep up with the state of the field to me as an engineer/CS is A: more fun, and B: more rewarding.

If anything this blog post (along with others) just keeps confirming that CTO is something I never want to be.

Edit: I should also mention that it is practice at my current company that our leads basically are the ones that consider the balance of implementation details and whether we do rewrites vs. staged refactoring. Not the CTO. This definitely seems like more of an engineering call.

CorvusCrypto··on Bringing Pokémon GO to life on Google Cloud
Upon first read I actually had the same thoughts as many and applied them to the google services as well as the application itself. However on reflection, yeah the services google provided were pretty impressive, especially after re-reading the following:

"Google CRE worked hand-in-hand with Niantic to review every part of their architecture, tapping the expertise of core Google Cloud engineers and product managers"

Architecture analysis may or may not be standard (I don't actually know since I've never had to deal with something like this) but that sounds great to me.

CorvusCrypto··on Overhead of Go’s Generic Sort
To be honest, while the generate functionality has been helpful, I have to say it's fairly annoying to manage at times. It can be super tempting to create a new generation tool that writes "ugly" memory optimized code (a la the stringer example by Rob Pike) only to find out you need to debug that mess. In something like stringer it would be okay, but for something more complex, perhaps not.

This is just a minor complaint. There is at least a workaround, even if the answer is still typing a bit more than if you used Templates/Generics.

CorvusCrypto··on Ask HN: Is there anything I can do to prevent burnout?
I have some things that fall into the category of #4 though I have been getting more stressed and losing time and motivation for them which makes your #2 advice seem extremely attractive to me. And of course vacation, as I replied to tmaly, is in the back of my mind also.

I don't know why, but at first read counseling just put a negative thought into my head, but on further thinking it sounds like a really good idea and would compliment delegation of tasks to reduce stress or at least help me deal with it.

Thanks for the reply, this helps!

CorvusCrypto··on Ask HN: Is there anything I can do to prevent burnout?
Vacation is a word I hear a lot these days. I definitely have been itching to plan a week or so out of country as you suggest. Will also checkout the headspace app, too, thanks! :)
CorvusCrypto··on I am a fast webpage
was thinking exactly this, keep loaded in mem for the duration of the server's lifetime. Not too familiar with HTTP2 but could you cache the compressed packet and reuse with minor modification to the headers when needed to speed up the communication?
