CorrectHorseBat··on When the sun will literally set on what's left of the British Empire
>That was over a decade ago.

You make me feel old

>In June 2019, millions took to the streets again in massive pro-democracy protests.

This was only 6 years ago.

>Hong Kongers ages 35 and older are more likely than their younger counterparts to feel very close to China.

That's the exact opposite of what you claim.

I agree they'll likely succeed in the end but they have not yet made HK just another part of China.

I don't think so, did you forget about the Umbrella Movement?

They could have done quite a lot to piss of the Chinese while still honoring the treaty. The lease was only for the New Territories, but they gave all of HK back. Or they could have tried to give it to the government in Taiwan.

Whether that would have protected the people of Hong Kong is another matter. I think at the time people were still optimistic about the direction China was taking and they might have thought China would be a democracy by 2047.

It's not proper use, it's archaic use. Do you also claim bread is meat? A cat is a deer?
CorrectHorseBat··on It’s not wrong that "\u{1F926}\u{1F3FC}‍♂️".length == 7 (2019)
page 48: > E3: Bei Schreibung mit Großbuchstaben ist neben der Verwendung des Groß buchstabens ẞ auch die Schreibung SS möglich: Straße – STRAẞE – STRASSE.

While in older versions [1] it was the other way around:

> E3: Bei Schreibung mit Großbuchstaben schreibt man SS. Daneben ist auch die Verwendung des Großbuchstabens ẞ möglich. Beispiel: Straße – STRASSE – STRAẞE.

In unicode the default is still SS [1] while the Germans seem to have changed it to ẞ [2]. That means now it's the same on every system, but once the unicode standard changes and some systems get updated and others not there will be different behavior of len("ß".upper()) around.

I don't know how or if systems deal with this, but ß should be printed as ss if ß is unavailable in the font. It's possible this is completely up to the user.

>also believe parent is wrong as there are unambiguous rules about when to use ß or ss.

I never said it was ambiguous, I said it depends on the unicode version and the font you are using. How is that wrong? (Seems like the capital of ß is still SS in the latest unicode but since ẞ is the preferred capital version now this should change in the future)

CorrectHorseBat··on It’s not wrong that "\u{1F926}\u{1F3FC}‍♂️".length == 7 (2019)
In German you have the same, only within one language. ß can be written as ss if it isn't available in a font, and only in 2017 they added a capital version. So depending the font and the unicode version the number of letters can differ.
CorrectHorseBat··on French firm Gouach is pitching an Infinite Battery with replaceable cells
How are ebikes not in the high margin category? The Bosch batteries sell for €1000/kWh at the pack level.

I think it's the BMS, Batteries in cars usually get used between 20/80% and have active cooling and heating while ebikes don't.

CorrectHorseBat··on Beyond Meat headed to Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Easy is definitely a big part of it. It's not impossible to make tasty and nutritious food without meat, it's just not as easy. Especially if you don't use any animal products at all. From an environmental and ethical point of view those don't really differ that much anyway.

Fake meat doesn't really taste like real meat yet, which is one reason why they aren't selling as well as hoped. I think it will be easier to develop fake meats which are indistinguishable from the real thing than convincing the majority of the people to forgo meat without having an equivalent replacement available. Making really really good fake meat is going to be extremely hard, making the majority of people vegan (or even significantly reduce their animal product consumption) without it will be borderline impossible.

CorrectHorseBat··on Beyond Meat headed to Chapter 11 bankruptcy
As you said because they couldn't afford it, not because the alternative was tastier. When people get richer they start eating meat because it tastes good and has great nutritional value.

Some people want to have the good of meat such as taste and nutrition value without all the bad such as animal cruelty and carbon emissions. What's so hard to understand about that?

CorrectHorseBat··on StarDict sends X11 clipboard to remote servers
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's acceptable for a Debian packager, but I think that it's much more likely than malicious intent.

>It's difficult to imagine how somebody to whom Debian's values are alien could even accidentally stumble their way into the position of being a Debian packager

It's not for me.

CorrectHorseBat··on StarDict sends X11 clipboard to remote servers
In your eyes maybe (and mine for the record), but different people have different values and expectations of what is privacy.
CorrectHorseBat··on StarDict sends X11 clipboard to remote servers
Malicious intent written in the package description? I would think that really unlikely.

I think it's just a cultural difference. Sogou, a super popular Chinese input program for Windows iOS and Android does the same with everything you type and nobody cares.

It's not, it forces your enemy to waste valuable resources on defending those civilian targets.

CorrectHorseBat··on Human speech may have a universal transmission rate (2019)
Yes:

>Each participant read aloud 15 identical passages that had been translated into their mother tongue. After noting how long the speakers took to get through their readings, the researchers calculated an average speech rate per language, measured in syllables/second.

CorrectHorseBat··on 200k Flemish drivers can turn traffic lights green
Cyclist aren't massive nor hot, on a hot summerday they will be cooler than the road surface. I think a camera with object recognition or something similar should be able to do it.

It's not the first time apps are being shoved where they shouldn't belong by the Flemish Government. They made a cooking app of half a million Euro [1] and there were trials where you could use an app to to get the deposit back on plastic bottles by scanning the bottle and your wastebag [2].

I'm not sure if it's incompetence, trying to look modern or just plain old corruption.

CorrectHorseBat··on Solar-plus-storage technology is improving quickly
If we use power-to-gas for the gas peaker plants, gas peaker plants can be just as renewable. We can use excess Summer electricity to generate it, We've already got the powerplants and storage anyway.

CorrectHorseBat··on Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough
If the world's energy usage increases by 2% for a thousand years we use 3.4 * 10^4 times more power than the solar radiation reaching the earth (1.02^1000 * 15/170000). Enough power to boil off the oceans in about a day (if I can believe Reddit and my math isn't off)

CorrectHorseBat··on 2B people don't have safe drinking water: what does this mean for them?
Because we're not talking about what it costs for an individual, we're talking about how to get clean water to everyone in the world.
CorrectHorseBat··on 2B people don't have safe drinking water: what does this mean for them?
But is that more efficient than having one set of plumbing with safe drinking water? I doubt it. Over here the price difference between drinking water from the tap and the cheapest bottled water is a factor ~200.

>Has anyone more than small scale feel good stories or "promising advancements". Do we have things that really improved at scale in the last ten or twenty years ?

Did you read the article? There's a graph right there. The website also has lots of other data, most things are steadily improving.

CorrectHorseBat··on EU rules for durable, energy-efficient and repairable smartphones and tablets
>Things like backup cameras, adaptive cruise control, and lane assist add very little to road safety (research has even shown that people relying on these features even start paying less attention on the road), but are mandatory.

I could believe it about the other things, but I really don't see how backup cameras fit in that list

CorrectHorseBat··on Why JPEGs still rule the web (2024)
Yes, JPG to JPEG XL and back is lossless, but the reverse is nowhere mentioned.

Trying around with some jpg and jxl files I cannot convert jxl losslessly to jpg files even if they are only 8bit. The jxl files transcoded from jpg files show "JPEG bitstream reconstruction data available" with jxlinfo, so I think some extra metadata is stored when going from jpg to jxl to make the lossless transcoding possible. I can imagine not supporting the reverse (which is pretty useless anyway) allowed for more optimizations.

CorrectHorseBat··on How to Store Data on Paper?
Information is ~log(possible states) according to Shannon.

Log(25)/log(4) is 2.3. Among other things this definition has the nice property that two disks/pages/drives/bits together contain the sum of the capacities instead of their product.
