CodeSheikh··on High Salaries Are Weapons in the AI Talent War
Any current/recently graduated CS students here who can confirm that students are required to take more mandatory Stats/Math classes in core CS curriculum instead of just electives?

"Designing AI systems requires a hard-to-come-by blend of high-level mathematics and statistical understanding, a grounding in data science and computer programming".

EDIT: Improved readability

CodeSheikh··on Amazon will launch its own delivery service to compete with FedEx, UPS
..to complete with FedEX, UPS and USPS, with later one being the worst of them all. Amazon has been stockpiling used cargo aircrafts for some time now in Seattle (hint..hint) and creating a delivery service at grass root city level makes much more sense for them because 1) you are not relying to ship goods from your regional warehouses often 2) this helps you get tax benefits by bringing in delivery jobs locally 3) expedited shipping of common use products such toilet papers, toothpaste etc that do not need to get shipped from regional warehouses. A lot of time your late delivery complaint just ended up you getting a $5 credit or a month waiver from your annual prime membership because Amazon can't hold USPS delivery guy accountable as it can to one of its own.
CodeSheikh··on Google is buying Chelsea Market building for over $2B
Google NYC is literally right across the block from Chelsea Market. This transaction would mean that Google will occupy the real estate above the actual market. Chelsea Market is an amazing place with great offerings of food etc. As long as this transaction does not ruin the ecosystem of CM then New Yorkers are OK with this transaction. Lets face it who would not want to sell their real estate to The Google?
CodeSheikh··on Chinese police don high-tech glasses to nab suspects
Do foreigners have to give biometric information such as finger prints, facial data to the Chinese airport authorities when they visit China? Anyone?
CodeSheikh··on A photographer capturing subcultures that refuse to die
I miss seeing hydraulically lifted cars on the streets. Whenever they would pull up next to my Kia at the traffic light, I would hope they could show off a move or two.
CodeSheikh··on The ReMarkable E Ink Tablet
I can literally see that stylus lag just by looking at the GIF published in the article. The claim "An E Ink tablet that's more fun to write on than paper." can't be true if you are an avid note-taker or are somewhat fond of calligraphy. And $600 price tag is steep.
CodeSheikh··on Show HN: Ask a Dev
Would love to see a chapter in NYC maybe with a more broader languages and frameworks. For example say I am currently struggling with Spring Boot framework and Stackoverflow.com is a good place to tailor my question there but sometimes we don't necessarily get our questions answered in a timely manner there. Having someone who has plenty of experience with Spring Boot could guide me on the right direction. Sure I can always hire a freelancer for his/her time but this might seem an overkill for just a question or two.

Indeed a welcoming solution. Come to NYC as well.

CodeSheikh··on BestBuy has stopped selling cds CDs and it is freaking out consumers
First they came for our punch cards, then they took our floppy disks, then VHS, and now our CDs. What’s next? Memory cards are going away too? ;)
CodeSheikh··on Dow plunges 1000 points
Just by looking at the continuously negative % drop over the historical data, there's a pattern in 2008 (The Crash)

9/15/08 9/29/08 10/7/08 10/9/08 10/15/08 10/22/08 12/1/08 −4.42 −6.98 −5.11 −7.33 −7.87 −5.69 −7.70

8/4/11 8/8/11 8/10/11 −4.31 −5.55 −4.62

8/21/15 8/24/15 −3.12 −3.57

2/2/18 2/5/18 −2.54 −4.60

For 2018 to reach 2008 state, lets see if there are more significant (>-4%) drops in 2018 for us to start freaking out.

Again this by all means is not a financial model, it is something that I put together to tell myself "Keep Calm"

CodeSheikh··on Mark – A simple and unified notation for both object and markup data
I wish the start of comment can still be made less verbose-y “{!-- comment --}”
CodeSheikh··on Slack is not for me
We were forced to move to Slack as well. Do not like it. It is more distracting than making us productive.

I enjoyed HipChat [https://www.atlassian.com/software/hipchat]

CodeSheikh··on What people actually do at WeWork
"Plenty of big companies are now tenants with their own floors or wings in WeWork: Microsoft, IBM, GE, Spotify, Bank of America, NBC Left Field, a fledgling unit of the network aimed at cord-cutting millennials." I personally find this trend problematic. Getting in to WeWork is not a challenging task. ONLY requirement is that you are able to pay your daily/weekly/monthly dues. If all of this is being done by large corps. for PR purposes than I can understand the whole "connect to Millennials bandwagon aspect". But of it is being done to actually hire "good" talent then I am not sure if it is always guaranteed that 3 out of 20 WeWork-ers are more than "good" coders. For me WeWork is like that coffee shop that never closes, there is always a table available for the coder in you and you have to paya premium price for average coffee.
CodeSheikh··on How WeChat Came to Rule China
The govt blocking the access of similar foreign apps (Whatsapp, Skype etc.) to the Chinese people has some role to play in the popularity of it. But yeah nice to see "Made in China first, for Chinese first" idea working out well for local investors/technologists.
CodeSheikh··on Alexander Hamilton’s Deep Advice
In the year 1800, Alexander Hamilton sent his son Philip the following letter, which laid out a set of rules that Philip should follow to make the most out of his legal training.
CodeSheikh··on Google and Facebook are watching our every move online
They provide free services. What do you expect? The data they have collected is so lucrative for them that they would never offer Facebook, Gmail, Google Search on a premium basis to daily consumer. I mean I would take premium package if they guarantee that they will not parse my images, parse my emails, parse my searches, connect dots among my social peers in order to help train their AI bots. Which/whenever they will use in the future to come up with better products or improve their existing products.

Sure there are problems associated with it. One of them is when malicious players like foreign govts get hold of such data and use it to their advantage.

CodeSheikh··on Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore
A lot of metropolitan cities already have bike-to-rent programs e.g. CitiBike in NYC, GoBike in SF. This looks like a quickly and sloppily put together plan to hush noisy investors and shareholders. But hey it is never a bad idea to have more bikes in SF. Especially innovative electric-assist ones.
CodeSheikh··on Amazon HQ2 finalists should refuse tax breaks, say nearly 100 economists
Greedy realtors would want this to happen in their city as it will inflate property values and fill their pockets deep. They certainly can influence city officials (via campaign funds etc.) to throw tax incentives at Amazon which will come from the pockets of tax payers. It would be interesting to have city wide referendum where constituents get to vote on such matters.
CodeSheikh··on How Amazon’s Ad Business Could Threaten Google and Facebook
Quality ads would be like "hey see that you are buying Topo Chico. Why don't you try these new flavors as well at a discounted rate?". Instead of "Buy Nestle water" ads. Or something very unrelated. Basically a win-win situation for both parties.

But to be honest I would be very much reluctant at seeing a lot of ads. They do this already with "Sponsored" products and most of the time it serves as distraction instead of convincing buyer into even at least clicking their ad.

CodeSheikh··on 2003 Request of Afghanistan for Redelegation of the .af Top-Level Domain
I hope people don't end up using this for AF (as f*) e.g. www.lit.af
CodeSheikh··on Amazon, Berkshire, JPMorgan to Create Healthcare Company
It is a welcoming move. I hope they make it available for public sector as well. I would be more than happy to have my prescriptions delivered using Amazon Prime same day/2nd day service.
CodeSheikh··on How Amazon’s Ad Business Could Threaten Google and Facebook
We see (or are forced to see) ads on Google, Facebook et al. is because they are free to use services for consumers. Eventhough that bother some us so much that we use all sort of ad blocking plug-ins at our disposal to stop seeing those pesky ads. I pay for my Amazon Prime membership and for every product I purchase on Amazon.com. Last thing I want is getting bombarded by obnoxious ads. while shopping for my next two-day delivery of Topo Chico water bottles there. Unless Amazon decides to roll out a steeply discounted Prime membership program, I would be a very unhappy customer seeing ads on a paid platform.
CodeSheikh··on Google experiments in local news with an app called Bulletin
As long as Google dose not regulate it for the interest of its stakeholders. There is always a lot of corruption happening at city and county levels that goes unheard because it does not pick national level momentum. Nor do I have time neither do I appreciate my "local" news channels and local newspapers. Most of the time they are writing/producing fluff pieces (kids stuck in an arcade claw machine or local dog gave birth to 60 puppies etc) to fill their news quotas. Having such service around would help me skim through important news at a quick glance.
CodeSheikh··on Robinhood Crypto – Invest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
Nice TRON-esque theme. TRON as in the classic arcade game/movie not the TRON crypto currency.
CodeSheikh··on 80's kids started programming at an earlier age than today's millennials
Maybe kids today are focused more on "disrupting" markets rather than take a step back and learn how to program those tools in order to disrupt.
CodeSheikh··on Apple previews iOS 11.3
Would be interesting to see if "business chat" turn into customer support.
CodeSheikh··on Bolt launches an Amazon-like checkout experience for the rest of online retail
Also, Amazon checkout experience on their mobile app is not fast or some of the best in the market.

1) Add item to cart. 2) Click top-right cart icon to go to cart. 3) Click "Proceed to checkout" button 4) Change shipping address/shipping days on this page 4a) Click default shipping method 4b) Select the delivery options (One day, 2 days etc) 4c) Press "Continue" 4c.i) Repeat above for each shipping group 5) Press "Place your order"

I am very much confused what/how exactly are they trying to compete with Amazon checkout experience? Have we reached a point where inserting/competing with Amazon is de facto?

CodeSheikh··on Bolt launches an Amazon-like checkout experience for the rest of online retail
Their before and after graphic is not only misleading but does not provide any useful information. What exactly are they trying to convey with greyed-out form fields? More fields to less fields?
CodeSheikh··on The U.S. drops out of the top 10 in innovation ranking
Agree that people in entertainment always making more money than skilled-professionals. But my point is that younger demographic is heavily influenced by current social-media-preneurs rater than STEM achievers.
CodeSheikh··on Why Don’t the 20 Cities on Amazon's HQ2 Shortlist Collectively Bargain?
Odds are in favor of Virginia (look up AWS and other data centers in that area). But it is still interesting to see how these cities are competing with each other and are throwing out tax payers money to lure in Amazon to moving in their backyard. I wonder if they would give similar incentives to small and upcoming businesses and startups.
CodeSheikh··on The U.S. drops out of the top 10 in innovation ranking
Part of the problem, money is flowing more towards sinks like "Social Influencers", "V-loggers" and other similar jobs. Younger generation is focusing more on instant fame/money/reward/acknowledgement than investing in long term initiatives like pursuing STEM based programs. Sadly we live in a time where a 15 year old is making more money posting his/her pictures than someone holding a Phd. Forget about academia jobs there are no more jobs in post-docs positions in USA anymore.
