CodeSheikh··on China's Moon mission sees first seeds sprout
Is it a misleading article since every thing happened in a contained simulated environment and NOT on the Moon? "The plants are in a sealed container on board the lander. The crops will try to form a mini biosphere - an artificial, self-sustaining environment." Only takeaway I can think of is the growth possible in a low-gravity environment
CodeSheikh··on Facebook to Invest $300m in Supporting Local News
Or Facebook to Invest $300m in Influencing Local News.

Facebook newsfeed model inherently works against local news and small guys (unless some certain piece goes viral once in a while). Local news outlet based out of some small locality does not have a huge follower base that gets Facebook's attention. This is just another PR stunt by Facebook.

CodeSheikh··on Samsung Phone Users Perturbed to Find They Can't Delete Facebook
What makes you think Match Group and Tinder are not already statistically matching people based on their algorithms? They are part of IAC and IAC is a giant publishing conglomerate based out of NYC.
CodeSheikh··on WeWork Gets a Visit from Financial Reality
"The Gulf investors backing the Vision Fund seem to have decided that WeWork is not a tech bet but simply an aggressive punt on real estate."

If you have earlier invested in WeWork as a tech startup then one should be questioning your investment strategies and research methods.

CodeSheikh··on I learnt C++ in 2018 and have no regrets
Unless your job demanded it I can't think of a compelling reason for a Node guy to learn C++ as their go to choice of OO language. Why not Java? Even Python is a good gateway to OO for folks coming straight form Node background.
CodeSheikh··on Pamir Highway: An epic drive on the roof of the world
I wonder about highway safety. Say I travel with a local tourist guide and would I be expecting him to carry weapons in the car for protection, granted tourists can't just go and "rent" guns and sickles there? From the pictures as epic as it seems to be it also gives the notion of wilderness.
CodeSheikh··on A thread for Junior Developers/Engineers
If requirements are not clear, stop coding and start asking questions. If your company track stories in JIRA then tag PM or anyone from the business who can help you clarify the requirements. From my experience, PMs are not sure what the exact requirements are. So asking them questions open up a channel of back-and-forth discussion.
CodeSheikh··on Coconut: Pythonic functional programming
Is it just me who finds adjective "Pythonic" usage unnecessary and somewhat elitist? Let's be honest, there are no other language counterparts (Java as Javish?! or JS as JSish?!) for such adjective and "Pythonic" seems to be used by a sub-set of Python community. Basically it is idiomatic.
CodeSheikh··on Rising Waters Are Drowning Amtrak's Northeast Corridor
"politically and economically" this is the problem right there. When people graciously justify (and subconsciously) roadblock to any advancement and progress economical and political issues.

If Amtrack pauses its service segment-by-segment so they get to focus on re-building infrastructure then I believe It will not have that much of a negative impact on travelers, at least. People can always resort to other traveling alternatives(buses, cars, planes). Heck, it is economical to travel from NYC to DC by bus vs train. Train gets you in 3 hours for $200 and bus gets you in 4 hours for $19. For me, $200 is worth paying if I get to DC in an hour!

Yes there will be job displacements while the overhaul is underway. But for numbers sake, more job will be created as part of the overhaul.

By politics I assume you meant unions. It is a rabbit-hole debate but I will say this that unions have done more damage to the infrastructure progress than any other political entity in northeast USA.

CodeSheikh··on Rising Waters Are Drowning Amtrak's Northeast Corridor
Blessing in disguise here for Amtrack and a great opportunity to do an overhaul of a subset of the one of the oldest railroad infrastructure in the USA. Many lessons we can learn from European counterparts.
CodeSheikh··on A Dictionary of Gestures
I opened the article hoping that it will be graphical dictionary of gestures. It is not.
CodeSheikh··on New York's Low Apartment Turnover Hinders Affordability
Unlike San Francisco, New Yorker cannot lock in to a rent when they first moved in. I wonder if this is something New Yorkers could have benefited from or adding to the problem that the article has pointed out.
CodeSheikh··on Fintech startup Plaid raises $250M at a $2.65B valuation
I would not be comfortable giving my banks, cards info to Plaid so they can provide an easy integration (API) to third party developers.

Why Venmo would need to hit Plaid API to get my banking info when they can provide their own API and allow seamless integration with my bank and credit card?

I honestly don't see the benefit over risk of handing over all my financial institutions information so they can provide a seamless API to consumers.

CodeSheikh··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I am not an attorney but very familiar with the process. Being an undergrad puts you in an EB3 category. And you need to find a job within that category and an employer willing to file a green card for you. Depending on your country of birth, the entire process from day one to the day you receive a green card can take up to 2 years. More for people from certain countries of birth e.g. India/China.
CodeSheikh··on Some Amazon employees bought NYC condos before news of HQ2 location emerged
My personal observation why Amazon was always going to move to LIC (New York City) and it has been decided if not years then months earlier: I live in NYC. I have a very good friend who moved to LIC in March this year. You have to understand that there is already abundance of construction going on in LIC for past few years, but not at an aggressive rate. But within a radius of three block where she lives (near FoodCellar market and Hayden something condos) construction peaked. I can count there are 7-8 aggressive construction going on this area alone. My understanding is clearly city leaked/shared this information with builders months in advance so that they can get a head start on these new condos. This area I am referring to is near One Court Sq (one of the buildings shortlisted for potential Amazon HQ).

CodeSheikh··on Texas Is About to Create OPEC’s Worst Nightmare
Don't forget that Texas is also one of the largest producer of nuclear energy in the nation.
CodeSheikh··on Apple has removed us from the App Store
"using the persistent location API also allows us to use an acknowledged acceptable way to capture when our users have active screen time." I am confused, how is screen time correlated with user location? If you want to check if a user is on the go and not using screen then there are other iOS SDK API that you can use to determine that. Are you trying to determine if a user is spending certain time on hhis/her phone during transit? Well, what if my phone is on a holder while I am backing and it is showing me the route? What if I am listening to Youtube videos while I am transiting with my eyes closed.

I am sorry, but location data has become a really hot topic to come in digital privacy related debates. And your usage is not justified. I would love to use your app but with "Always" flag off.

CodeSheikh··on The backlash against overtourism
I don't want to sound harsh but aren't some of those European countries struggling financially and tourism money is the least hectic way to bring in new revenues where it affects (positively) across the entire food-chain (from visa fees to airline tickets to food carts on the streets). Why such a backlash? It can be governed and moderated but blatantly discouraging tourism is not a solution.
CodeSheikh··on Microsoft Joins the Open Invention Network
Hopefully MS joining OIN would further discourage patent trolls.
CodeSheikh··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
Yes it is a huge socio-economic issue but I was referring only to economic part of it. No one would ever want to be separated from their family.
CodeSheikh··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
While many in the comments are throwing salary/cost of living/taxes numbers left and right but no one is making a case for extreme winters in Canada vs the Bay Area. I can understand that it might not mean a lot to some but for me it can be a deal breaker.
CodeSheikh··on Portal from Facebook: Voice Enabled Hands-Free Video Calling

CodeSheikh··on Apple Shortcuts User Guide
Useless app. They rebranded it recently. It is not deeply rooted with iOs. I gave up a while ago.

Side not: This title is helluva misleading. I thought it is a list of shortcuts for OSX.

CodeSheikh··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?
This is a wrong statement on so many levels: "By learning C, you can learn how computers work". I am glad you did write an article but honestly you did not have to go to this length to explain your case. Anyone who says that learning C is a prereq. for understanding Computer architecture then my friend the advice is not coming from a right place. One reason I can think of is why author got confused is because a lot of freshman courses use C programming language in order to explain the computer architecture.

e.g. http://www.ece.utexas.edu/undergraduate/courses/306 use this textbook: https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Computing-Systems-Gates-...

This course starts with assembly language and then use C as the first programming language in order to understand computer architecture. C is the de-facto language when it comes to teaching embedded systems (think limited HW resources like memory etc).

Learn Assembly to learn how computer works!

CodeSheikh··on Chile unveils Patagonian Route of Parks hiking trail
Good for humans bad for animals. Hopefully Chilean government is as aggressive about preserving the wildlife as about tourism.
