Clamchop··on Rio de Janeiro's talipot palm trees bloom for the first and only time
The general term for plants that set seed once is monocarp. Most famously agave and bamboo, among plants with cycles longer than two years.

For plants like bamboos, they're interesting because the periods can be quite long, over a hundred years in some cases, so it's simply rare to see them in flower, and due to how they're propagated and how they keep time, you sometimes see a mass worldwide flowering and die off followed by a shortage of that plant.

It's a much rarer reproductive strategy than annual, biennial, or perennial.

Adds complexity, cost, and clutter. Meanwhile, the living situations of many (most?) people forbid it; no big-kicking subwoofers in apartments and condos, and you're probably keeping the volume at polite levels.

And for all that, it's likely still not up to par with a theater, unless you geeked out on a dedicated theater room.

Clamchop··on Indie game developers have a new sales pitch: being 'AI free'
Lie was probably the wrong word. Secrecy about how work is done is and has always been normal. Not saying anything at all if you're not obligated to is totally fair and, yes, fine. AI doesn't change that.
Clamchop··on Indie game developers have a new sales pitch: being 'AI free'
This observation seems innately vulnerable to sampling error and confirmation bias. "Good" generative AI almost by definition is difficult to notice.

I've noticed this, too, and have likened it to haircuts: If you gave yourself a haircut, you don't say so, because it inevitably opens the door to a level of scrutiny and criticism that it wouldn't otherwise.

People are just going to lie about using AI and honestly that's fine. An even older idiom is that you don't want to see how the sausage gets made. Not if you enjoy sausage.

Clamchop··on Automating our home video imports
No need for FCP, as iMovie can still capture DV streams from Firewire. I'd expect they both use the same implementation.

However, Apple has removed Firewire support entirely from macOS Tahoe so none of these solutions will work on Mac going forward.

I didn't downvote or anything, but I read the article a few hours ago and felt the information in that article is only political. If we're talking about destruction, ecological or of heritage, your choice not in whether it happens, but how much and where. Consequently, I feel that the stated reasons of political action groups are usually myopic at best. But really, I always suspect they're speaking in bad faith.

If you really care about animals, plants, or archeology, you're probably not a fan of coal or natural gas, which are obviously destructive of geology and habitats, and that's _without_ getting into more nebulous and catastrophic climate stuff.

Clamchop··on Walmart U.S. moves to eliminate synthetic dyes across all private brand foods
Calling it "the perfume industry" is a half truth. It's the flavoring industry, but it so happens that there's a lot of overlap between perfume and flavoring in terms of raw materials.

However, flavoring is a distinct profession. Besides that, very few novel compounds are allowed in food compared to fragrance. If any flavoring is synthetic in origin (which is not the same thing as novel, to be clear) then the product must be labeled as artificially flavored. If they call the product 100% juice and added flavoring is used, then that flavoring in turn has to have been sourced from the fruit.

In other words, they're using extracts from real oranges to reconstitute the flavor lost during pasteurization. They can further adjust which parts of the extract they use (called fractions and isolates) to dial in a particular flavor.

I don't disagree that Fox News is problematic for lots of reasons and I also have personal grievances with how they and similar outlets have affected several members of my family. That said, it's become folk knowledge that Fox News doesn't even think they're news, but that's simply a misunderstanding of the case. There's a tiny bit of irony that there are those who are patting themselves on the back for being above misinformation and getting this important detail wrong.

I've seen the actual news that comes from them and while it's certainly biased rightward, particularly in what they choose to report on, it's not outrageously so.

Fox News argued in court that their political commentary programming isn't news. They didn't argue that none of their programming is news.

I understand the complexity of time, but this scenario doesn't seem all that difficult. Any user expects (I won't get into what they want) to be shown _their_ day, and they expect it to be local calendar time. You _might_ want to show wee hours events, from midnight to just short of 5am. Apps like Teams do a good job of spacially illustrating time as it matters to you _and_ as it matters to others.

Clamchop··on Perfume reviews
Perfumery is much maligned and misunderstood. It is, ultimately, an art form, a kind of human expression like music or painting, that is rarely appreciated as such. Many would happily see it banned, knowing nothing about it other than that some people wear too much. That'd be like banning music because your neighbor's TV is too loud.

Lucky Scent (mentioned in this article) has a boutique in LA. If you're nearby, you can go in and sample to your heart's content. Perfume boutiques are unfortunately rare but most large cities will have something and they're accessible and inviting in my experience. There really is a _lot_ more out there than what a Sephora or Macy's will ever show you.

Nice article. He correctly notes that vocabulary for describing odors is limited for most so reviews and descriptions trend quite "purple" and abstract. There is a vocabulary, though, but it'd take some time spent with some books and a perfume organ to make progress on that front.

Clamchop··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says
Good thing this scenario is entirely fictional. Even if it weren't completely made up, though, you'd still be ethically obligated to assess immigrants as individuals and not simply guilty by association, except perhaps under the most dire wartime circumstances.

You'd also be legally obligated, but to be lawful is not always the same thing as being ethical nor moral.

It would be challenging, I admit, considering the country will have doubled in size with half of them being infants that naturally don't speak English, or any language for that matter.

We really should close that loophole, though. And it definitely is a loophole and not the explicit intention of a constitutional amendment. An oversight to be sure.

I've had at least three prescription dental products: Fluoride lacquers (can cause fluorosis supposedly so not without risk), chlorhexidine antiseptic mouth rinse, 3M Clinpro 5000 toothpaste (high fluoride again).

I've had only a quarter as many implants so I guess it just depends.

There are tremendous outliers here, although this feels like a good occasion to bring up the class size paradox: The vast majority of corps are small, but since so many people work for the extremely large ones, it may seem like they tend to be on the large side.
Clamchop··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
Using the product or vendor logo as a menu icon on desktop is its own trope. The Apple menu and the Start menu aren't even the same kind of menu, nor do they function the same as "hamburger" app or website navigation on mobile.
Clamchop··on Fujifilm X half: Is it the perfect family camera?
Price sensitivity re: children and breaking things is going to depend on financial situation and intention. This is a person that shoots a $10k Leica, so I'm going to guess there's more than enough money and a strong intent to share an "authentic" photography experience (a camera of traditional form) with their kids. The latter appears to be this camera's gimmick.

They describe this camera as "cheap" even!

Clamchop··on Queer in the country: Why some LGBTQ Americans prefer rural life to urban
> But my analysis of a 2013 Pew Survey of LGBTQ Americans -- the latest available comprehensive national survey data on this population -- showed that LGBTQ rural residents are actually more likely to be legally married than their urban counterparts -- 24.8% compared with 18.6%. This aligns with what I’ve heard in interviews. The rural LGBTQ people I spoke with placed a high value on monogamy – on what many of them consider a “normal” life.

This is one of those cases where causality is implied but is questionable. Finding lovers in the sticks is hard enough; it is exceptionally difficult if you are queer, and that's going to influence behavior and choices in all sorts of ways, and those can be rationalized in all sorts of ways, too.

A less charged example: adults living in cities are (probably) more likely to participate in, and value participating in, team sports. Let's assume they report honestly as such on a questionnaire.

Obviously, there are more opportunities to play sports in cities, but does that imply that rural folks wouldn't partake at about the same rate if they could, even though they say that they wouldn't?

I can see plausible arguments in either direction, and for several kinds of selection and reporting biases.
