NOTE: Most of the above are “placeholders.” I’m mainly active here and GitHub (code repo, not community).

I have two companies:

https://littlegreenviper.com (where most of my writing is done -this is probably the best place to contact me)

https://riftvalleysoftware.com (where most of my coding is done -The site is currently being revamped)

If you need to contact me, both those sites have contact forms. I'll get the email.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Giving up on smart rings
Doesn't sound like a complaint against "smart" rings; more like a general complaint against rings.

Also sounds like the author has done a great deal of work to improve himself, physically, and I can respect (and hat tip) to it, but he would definitely see the same issue with a wedding ring (except that you can usually resize those).

I wear my wedding ring constantly; even in the shower. I'm old-fashioned, and haven't really changed that much, since I got married (besides getting grayer and wrinklier).

ChrisMarshallNY··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
I'm glad to see this keep popping up. It gets pushed down, very quickly, when it does.

I suspect the reason for that (nothing other than a "gut feeling" that I get, seeing the story pushed off the front page so quickly, every time), is that the breach was through a backdoor that was deliberately coded into the system, for TLA use, and what happened, is exactly what people keep warning about; it got breached, and is now a "front door," and The Powers That Be don't want that examined too closely.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
They seem to be very good at "mob tactics."

No one can prove anything, for example, but anyone knows that people that piss Putin off, need to stay away from windows in high places.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I recently released a total rewrite of an app that's been shipping for the last couple of years, with moderate success.

The new version gives me a baseline for adding a lot more capability, while maintaining Quality, so I'm beginning to map out the way forward.

The first thing that I'm doing, though, is revisiting most of my old dependencies with an LLM, and improving the corner case handling and documentation. That will take a while.

WatchOS, too. Not tvOS, though.
ChrisMarshallNY··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Hoka is great. I have several pairs. I tend to go through a couple of pairs a year.

Not that long ago, they were an oddity, around here.

Let's hope success doesn't spoil them.

I used to use Nikes, then something happened, and the exact same type that were comfortable, last year, are now giving me blisters.

Enshittification doesn't just affect tech.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
They definitely have their own servers. There was a post about that, some time ago. There’s a sibling post to yours, about them.

Not sure about the backplane architecture. I’m pretty sure they are custom datacenter rack units.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Bad code is kudzu
Somewhere, there’s a kudzu recipe book.

I think the roots are quite good.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Bad code is kudzu
> as a way to combat soil erosion

I heard it differently. I heard that it was imported for aesthetic reasons (like starlings).

Nasty stuff. We're starting to see it up here, in New York. I remember it well, from Maryland.

Yay climate change!

I often "hit the reset button" on projects. It used to be waiting until the pain was great enough, but LLMs make it a lot easier.

I won't link it, here (the last time I did, it got flagged), but look up Guy Macon's Insult File.

Not a single word that would have tripped the content filters of the time.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Don't call yourself an artisanal programmer
This seems to be changing, in the year of heavy LLM use that I’ve done.

When I started, I had to review every line, and frequently found bugs, but lately, I’ve been impressed with the quality of the code. I don’t think that I’ve had to make any code-level adjustments, in a while.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Don't call yourself an artisanal programmer
I have had the same experience.

I’m still in the process of revisiting and refining the many hand-coded dependencies that I’ve created, over the years.

Most of the issues found, were corner cases, that would likely never be encountered, but they are issues, nonetheless.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Yeah.

The other app doesn’t copy the user data part of my app, so they get a pass.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Fuck it, make it anyway
I scoped out exactly that.

The issue is that I store user data. Also, the users of the app are a very privacy-sensitive demographic. That raises the stakes, considerably.

I can't just "vibe code" an app that does the same thing mine does. It needs to be vetted by a good native Android developer that I trust, and that gets expensive.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Fuck it, make it anyway
For the last couple of years, I've been crafting and shipping a free app that Serves a particular narrow demographic. It works extremely well, but is a native iOS app (I don't write Android). When I first developed it, I worked with a professional graphic designer, and the app has a unique UX. In fact, with the latest release, I had to "walk back" a bit of the stuff the designer did, as I believe it interfered with usability. It's really a pretty intense app. There's a lot of moving parts. It handles user data, so I have to make sure it's secure and high-Quality.

Recently, a couple of very talented engineers vibe-coded a cross-platform app that is nowhere near as nice, but is highly effective at the most important aspects of the one I wrote. They are also very good at promoting, and it will get a lot of press. I have no doubt that many folks that would normally use the app I wrote, will use that.

At first, I was all mopey and emo about it, but I realized that it doesn't matter. Their app is decent. It's fairly ugly (LLM-generated UX is pretty bland), but works very well. The guys behind it, are good engineers, and I know that it will improve (although I doubt their UX will, much). Neither of them is a native iOS or Android developer, though. They are backend folks.

Instead, I'll be doubling down on making my app as good a native experience as possible. There's still a lot of stuff I can add, and Apple keeps adding more capabilities that afford native implementation.

I have also been using an LLM as a "trusted advisor," not as an employee. It's made a huge difference. It may end up eroding my "hands on" skills a bit, but not by that much. I find that I am constantly reviewing the work it does, and my knowledge helps me to really get the most out of it. I managed a software development team for a long time, so I am pretty familiar with delegating work to employees that are actually more capable than I am. I guess that helped me to accept LLMs, as an IC.

I'm basically looking forward to this. One of the reasons that many of my apps don't have a lot of new features, is because I never had the time to study and implement them (I refuse to add bad stuff. It needs to work well, so I am picky about what goes into my work). With an LLM, it looks like that is no longer an issue.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Used signal drums.
ChrisMarshallNY··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I'm a cable hoarder. I have cables for technologies that have been dead, for decades.

I need help.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Sounds like it's something that must have been painful, all around.

Boards really don't like doing things like this, as it signals instability, and shareholders hate instability. That's why so many boards leave clearly non-optimal CEOs in place, so often.

This is not something that has been a focus of my attention, except when it was shoved into my face. I'm really too old for that kind of agita.

I do run a couple of WP sites. I'm considering switching a couple to static sites, (via a generator, or maybe LLM-generated static sites), but I need one of them to remain WP (for now), as that hosts my blog.

ChrisMarshallNY··on AirPods 5
I have a friend that was in the music industry for decades, and listening to music was a significant aspect of his job.

To this day (he’s retired), he won’t use wireless (even ones with bespoke connections), or ANC headphones.

I use AirPods when I take my morning walks. The shitty quality is actually a plus, because I can hear the cars that try to run me over (I walk at 5:30 AM, and people are not at the top of their game, at that time).

I have a couple of pairs of Bose QC headphones, for in-home listening. There’s nothing [wireless] that comes close, for ANC.

The new regular AirPods are interesting to me.

ChrisMarshallNY··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Eh. As a Mac user, my AAA choices are limited. I mostly play Borderlands 2 & 3, and NMS. I’m not a huge gamer, and these have been enough for me. I just play in bursts, when I’m taking breaks from coding.

I don’t like playing with others, as the experience of being fragged by a 15-year-old, shouting biologically impossible suggestions to me, is not really on my bucket list.

I’ll play it. It won’t be super exciting, but, if I was serious about gaming, I’d get a dedicated Windows rig.

ChrisMarshallNY··on iPhone Duo
I’ve seen that happen a couple of times. I know there was an infamous Microsoft one, where the demo BSOD’d on Bill Gates (Not WWDC. I wasn’t there, but I’m sure there’s video). Microsoft used to demo real unstable stuff.

I remember one WWDC, where Ian Diery was giving a demo with a young man, and asked “Where’s the beef?” The kid looked down at his pants, and the crowd burst into laughter.

Diery did not laugh. He was a fairly serious chap, with no discernible sense of humor, so I expect his assistant was sanctioned for that.

I think the last DuDub I went to, was around 2005 (pre-iPhone). I know it was at Moscone. Jobs led that. He was one of the best presenters I’ve ever seen. He could recover from curveballs almost imperceptibly.

The first, was in 1987, or 1988. One of the first.

ChrisMarshallNY··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
From what I hear, Larry Ellison has no detectable sense of humor. Something about a lawnmower...
ChrisMarshallNY··on iPhone Duo
Absolutely none of the announcements today, make me want to go out and get something. I am giving the Duo a year or two, to work out the bugs, and get more capability. The extra screen space isn't really interesting to me.

The only ones I might consider, are the new base AirPods. I have never really warmed to the Pros (I have two pairs, but like the regular ones better).

I am looking forward to iOS27. I'm interested in seeing how the simulator presents the Duo.
