ChrisArgyle··on Secretive fusion company claims reactor breakthrough
Check out the US DOE budget [1]. For fusion energy alone they spent ~$400 million per year for the last several years. In addition they spent ~$1.3b on nuclear physics and high energy physics. From my experience as an undergrad lab assistant I can tell you that many of the funded physics experiments are indirectly related to fusion research because they study the byproducts of our best understood fusion reactor, the sun.

ChrisArgyle··on You Do Not Have to Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
Publishing misleading health studies wouldn't be so risk-free if your average American could easily distinguish a legitimate expert opinion from a media/commercial one.

Unfortunately most Americans don't have access to a quality health education necessary to make that distinction.

ChrisArgyle··on What is going on with SoundCloud?
Don't mistake me, there is no comparison to acoustic music. I use SoundCloud daily to discover new electronic music (which I do with great success)

I'm speaking from my frustration with the sea of unimaginative "remixes" that barely diverge from the original mix.

ChrisArgyle··on What is going on with SoundCloud?
There are large swaths of the SoundCloud user base that rely so heavily on sampling that they contribute very little creatively. A great example is "nightcore". Though the result is quite enjoyable it really doesn't take a lot of skill to create (wholesale copy a trance song, pitch up the vocals, speed up the track a bit, done)
ChrisArgyle··on What is going on with SoundCloud?
Fair point about the focus on majors. I would argue, though, that they're not completely abandoning indies, just raising the bar for entry. Like going from hypem.com to pitchfork.com
ChrisArgyle··on What is going on with SoundCloud?
SoundCloud's take-down algorithms are only targeting musicians who rely on sampling copyrighted works. This, clearly, is a large chunk of SoundCloud's current user base but I honestly think this will result in a net increase in quality.
ChrisArgyle··on Ember.js 2.0 Released
Unfortunately the aforementioned backpedaling--the new router--only allows Angular 2 components to live side-by-side with Angular 1 components. If you want any Angular 2 features you still have to rewrite that component.

ChrisArgyle··on Graphs That Showed Landmark Discoveries but Were Later Debunked
There are some interesting politics behind the Higgs boson results mentioned in the article. The 144GeV result should not have been released because it was not significant by particle physics standards (>5 standard deviations). However, the world was frothing at the mouth for LHC news, so out it went

There's a great documentary on Netflix about it called Particle Fever https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_Fever

Very enjoyable read, thanks OP.

Even though my math muscles haven't been exercised in a decade this article was easy to grasp.

ChrisArgyle··on A Computational Approach for Obstruction-Free Photography [pdf]
This seems to be a trend with academic articles. I don't think they have bosses saying "that's great but Page Speed says..."
ChrisArgyle··on Hacker shows he can locate, unlock and remote start GM vehicles
Same here although I wonder if any vehicles allow you to shut off the wireless radios a la "airplane mode".
ChrisArgyle··on VMware Photon: Minimal Linux Container Host
Hypervisors afford many benefits such as dynamic resizing of compute and storage resources, low (or no) impact hardware maintenance thanks to live migration, single-pane-of-glass machine management, etc.

Unless your environment is 100% application-level clustered these will be invaluable features.

ChrisArgyle··on Hola VPN Already Exploited by “Bad Guys”, Security Firm Says
Well I understand their business model. Given valuation is a function of MAU:

1) Boost MAU by any means necessary 2) Pray 3) Monetize/get acquired

ChrisArgyle··on Hola VPN Already Exploited by “Bad Guys”, Security Firm Says
I suppose the lesson here is don't use "free" services until you fully understand the provider's business model.
ChrisArgyle··on Scientists reverse aging in human cell lines and give theory of aging a new life
Self preservation is possibly the most powerful instinctual urge humans experience. It doesn't seem very likely that child-bearing people will stick to their mortality pledge when faced with death.

I'd expect this approach would just slightly delay the population issue meanwhile creating a massive black market for pledge-breakers.

ChrisArgyle··on Why Your Dog Can Get Vaccinated Against Lyme Disease and You Can’t (2012)
There's nothing quite like that feeling you get after a hike when you DON'T find any ticks and wonder if it's already latched on somewhere out of sight.
ChrisArgyle··on Scientists reverse aging in human cell lines and give theory of aging a new life
People may stop dying but they won't stop reproducing. Let's make sure we master space exploration and terraforming before we start overpopulating the earth.
ChrisArgyle··on Over 30% of Official Images in Docker Hub Contain Security Vulnerabilities
Worse, doing this breaks your guarantee that all environments deployed from this image will be consistent. You'll have to deploy some config management software (Puppet/Chef/Salt/Ansible) to stay on top of these changes.

ChrisArgyle··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
There's no way to advance a discussion by simply stating there is a correlation between crime and race. What solutions come from that? Genocide? Internment?

Crime is a complex system that involves more than just the two axes race and violence.

ChrisArgyle··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
It seems as if you're saying violent crime is a function of race (crazy talk) instead of class status (arguable).

Is it possible that, due to race-income inequalities in America, that black males are also more likely to have low/no income at the same "much higher rate"?

ChrisArgyle··on Some Practical Thoughts on Suicide
Major depression turns life into quicksand. It seems like anything you do makes it worse so you choose to do nothing. Eventually it gets unbearable and suicide starts creeping in.

ChrisArgyle··on The programming talent myth
Kaplan-Moss has been working on high profile projects with highly talented developers for something like a decade. Due to this environment his analysis (unwittingly?) only includes data at the "good programmer" end of the bi-modal distribution.

Unfortunately for The Rest Of Us we're stuck with the occasional coworker who writes code like a misprinted example from Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days.

ChrisArgyle··on How Old Do I Look?

ChrisArgyle··on Why we are leaving Dropbox
It's important to voice concerns with wildly popular software but not very thought-provoking. You don't get the call-to-action feel without a discussion of solutions.
