Cherian··on Facebook Sponsors Let's Encrypt
Before the skeptical comments rush in, can we for a moment take a step back and appreciate this. Facebook has a lot of leaders who has worked in the industry for long and I am sure they understand the value as much as we do. There’s a very strong possibility that FB did this without any motives.

Cherian··on How We Tested Our Food Blog’s Expected CPM with Premium Images
We are not building a community of food bloggers. We are a food blogging platform. Think of us like Tumblr, specific to food blogging.

Some of the blogs on the platform: http://indugetscooking.com/ http://sousvidelife.com/ http://richagupta.cucumbertown.com/ etc.

And all the recipes are in hrecipe format [1][2]. And yes, we have an API that opens to cookbook companies.

Don’t take this literally. We don’t like the ad model much. Its very unobtrusive and compromising to the user experience. The authors spend a lot of time creating content. And they need to make a livelihood to sustain their passion. For that, as a platform we need to help them build such mechanics.

Internally, we debated putting a “refund button” right next to the pay button. We think that would create much more confidence. But hey, this is the first iteration.

Thanks so much. Means the world. I quite don’t fancy the “fail fast” Silicon Valley model. Everything meaningful and beautiful takes time and sacrifice and lots of course correction. We also got acquired by Cookpad along the way [1]

We moved on from the Github or food to a Food blogging platform. Our users were using the platform to start writing and once they reach maturity we saw a migration to wordpress and other platforms. We knew we could fix that problem.

Also, by that time we realized we could do a much better job monetizing these blogs and making it into a livelihood by economics-of-scale.

As a food blogging platform trying to monetize and build a livelihood using author -> audience models, this is one of the first experiments that we are running. There are quite a few challenges and probably we fail a lot but this experiment seems like it could work.

Part of it was also inspired by Blendle’s experiment[1]

Cherian··on Buffer's transparency dashboard: Public salaries, equity and more
Every time Buffer did something like this, I was skeptical. I thought this was just a marketing angle and they’ll have to abandon this at some point when they scale.

But I was wrong. Shame on me.

Props to the Buffer team. You’ve set new standards. An engineering candidate referred to Buffer’s salary during the interview and I realized how much they mean to all of us now.

Cherian··on Is it better to buy or rent?
Forgive me, I was very biased toward Bay Area.
Cherian··on Is it better to buy or rent?
Even in this case, isn’t there a reasonably good chance the person could have sold it for 10% more than ($X+$Y+$Z)[1] at the time of the crisis? The lender and the loaner will part with the equity based on the mortgage payments over the years.

Based on cursory look into Redfin data, homes in the Bay Area are vanishing in 5-12 days, selling at 100-300K above the listed price.

[1] I hope we don’t cite recession here.

Cherian··on Musk files to provide Internet service from space
1. At the risk of sounding stupid, will governments allow something like this that can bypass gateways under control?

2. Can cellphone communication work this way on scale (like Iridium)? Bypassing providers like tmobile, sprint etc.

Cherian··on Ask HN: Google copying website data to SERP. What can I do?
This is not restricted to me, but a lot of food bloggers who are not on my platform.
Cherian··on Ask HN: Google copying website data to SERP. What can I do?
Precisely the point. They are showing the steps too.
Cherian··on Ask HN: Google copying website data to SERP. What can I do?
Our recipes are in microdata format
Cherian··on If you are storing important info in Evernote, think twice
The note is over a year old. Maybe much more. The app should have told me something’s wrong. A red icon or a message. What if I had continued status quo for another year.

My primary assumption with Evernote is that everything is stored somewhere “safe”. Everything else is bells and whistles. It’s a bit like saying Gmail/Outlook is unable to send mails, and you are not informed.

Cherian··on Snapchat Said to Seek Up to $19B Value in Funding Round
Does it matter if it’s a 5 y’o or 19 y’o?

Does it matter if its only 3 years old?

All that matters is the TAM and growth rate.

Cherian··on Snapchat Said to Seek Up to $19B Value in Funding Round
I don’t use Snapchat. Never really figured it out. But I hope Snapchat becomes the competitor that Facebook needs.

Props to the founders for not selling out.

Cherian··on $2.25 Lyft line rides in SF
I’ve been a regular Lyft Line user. Except for some cars that show up in pretty bad shape and smell, it’s a good experience. And I’ve had to wait much longer on an average.

It’s heartening to see a company just focused on the “user” and not just world domination.

Cherian··on Renting a 1-bedroom apartment near BART in the Bay Area
Founders, if you are reading this: When I click on the top left http://d.pr/i/JLux , please take me to the main site. It seems a bit counter intuitive, but I wanted to know what you guys do and there was no way other than to edit the URL (I’ve made the same mistakes).

Great post!

Nope. 300 points. Each recipe can be crave/rated for points.

Not sure of this. Can you point me to one?

When you cross a threshold of recipes, we assign the domain. Else the whole page looks very empty.

A long requested feature – I hope we get time to build a mini bookmarking feature.
Cherian··on Show HN: RecipeWriter – An editor to write recipes
We want to build this as a platform exposing the data where you can write an app on top of this and do this calculations. Think FB apps on FB.
Cherian··on Show HN: RecipeWriter – An editor to write recipes
We don’t have an explicit button but if you need the data we can export it for you.

Alternatively all the content is in hrecipe format. It shouldn’t be much work to take a dump.

Cherian··on Show HN: RecipeWriter – An editor to write recipes
Actually we had the print version, which was more readable, and attention focused. That didn’t make it in the current iteration. Point noted.
Cherian··on Show HN: RecipeWriter – An editor to write recipes
We had a feature – “create a variation”. Unfortunately the feature did not work well in the real world and we had to pull the plug.

Literature cannot be forked the way we think about it in code. My variation of the potpie isn’t simply a fork of the ingredients and editing lines. It’s “likely” a different style altogether and in most cases required the new author to write something ground up. We tried fixing this but the edge cases became too complex to handle.

Cherian··on Show HN: RecipeWriter – An editor to write recipes
Sorry about this. The system learns. i.e. new keywords get added regularly via new recipes. I’ll add this to the repository.
