ChemSpider··on Nobel Prize Chemistry 2023
Anyone knows more about this "Nanocrystals Technology Inc., New York" company from Ekimov? I did a quick google search but could not find anything.
ChemSpider··on Japan Airlines is offering to check a big item off your packing list – clothing
The Lufthansa offer is no greenwashing via CO2 compensation. It is CO2 neutral fuel ("SAL"). This is the way to go. The downside is that it is a (currently) very expensive option. Then again, if I would be a movie star or the like, I would check this box every time I fly.
ChemSpider··on LK-99: The live online race for a room-temperature superconductor
That is exactly my guess. I have been in the lab, and I know how easy it is to see something because you desperately want to see it...
ChemSpider··on LK-99: The live online race for a room-temperature superconductor
I am surprised that anyone still thinks this thing is legit. I mean, I wish it was true, but the publication, the approach and the infights in the team do not instill confidence.

To me, it seems they can not recreate the "effect" themselves. Otherwise they would be shipping their samples around the world by now.

ChemSpider··on Not paying electricity for an entire year with Tesla Solar Roof [video]
25 years is just what they guarantee, it probably lasts much longer.

My solar roof (not Tesla, of course) is meanwhile 21 years old, and works almost like on day 1. Since I dont expect a sudden failure in 4 years, my guess it that it will last another 10-20 years.

ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
Well, last time I had some hope for room temperature superconductors that was with doped fullerenes (C60 and friends). That was a truly novel approach.
ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
For me, that is what I would call "just bake something together", the YBCO way.

That said, I see now that I should have made this point clearer. See below for my comment with C60. That was a truly different approach (that failed).

ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
Anonymous or not, the "MPI guy" explains why he came to this conclusion, and it sounds legit.
ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
That is what I would call a slightly modified approach. They just "bake something together" and hope to get lucky. No way.

Anyway, I am not an expert. I hope they have a win here, but hard to believe at this point.

ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
To create such a dramatic increase in critical temperature, I would expect you need a dramatic change in chemistry (as in: formula, materials,...) as well.
ChemSpider··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
My issue here is: This new material is essentially standard "high temperature" YBCO superconductor material just slightly modified, or? The authors are not doing anything dramatically new, like a new chemistry.

How likely is it that all the other 1000s of labs doing research on this topic just missed this lucky combination of baking, cooling and whatnot?

ChemSpider··on Elite College Admissions Data Suggests Being Very Rich Is Its Own Qualification
Interesting that to my knowledge only US universities have this kind of "lets look at extra curriculars" admission system in the first place. In all/most other countries, it is high school grades or entrance exams only.

Or - even better IMHO - it is admit almost everyone, and then have some tough exams (e. g. ETH Zurich).

ChemSpider··on How is ChatGPT's behavior changing over time?
For _medical_ questions, the public version of ChatGPT has become useless. Even a simple question such as "What are the typical side effects of XYZ" is answered with a gigantic disclaimer and then often a fancy version of "I am not sure". Yeah, that much I knew already.

It used to be better in the past.

ChemSpider··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
I assume this guy has a decent income and is not desperate for money. Why would he sell anything for $100??? Time, effort, legal fees and whatnot are much higher than $100.

Even if the company would be indeed worthless, I would not bother selling my shares for $100. I would just watch them go to 0.

ChemSpider··on First people sickened by Covid-19 were scientists at WIV: US government sources
If the lab leak story is correct, the WIV people knew somewhere inbetween September...November 2019 that the virus leaked.
ChemSpider··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
That is nonsense. Even highly qualified people like Alina Chan were pushed in the conspiracy camp during the first year - just for saying that the lab leak is one (of many) possible sources of the virus.
ChemSpider··on TikTok Spied on Me. Why?
Source? If the FB case is highly publicised, you certainly have a link to it, or?
ChemSpider··on Companies in Apple’s repair program say they can’t compete with tech giant
There should be a law forcing tech companies to sell spare parts at cost + 20% markup.

Heck, these companies could even simply use Amazon for handling the logistics of it.

Some companies like Bosch Home Appliances actually sell spare parts in their own online store at very reasonable prices - so it is doable.

ChemSpider··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
So you would rather buy a car from one of the "Dieselgate" companies?

> Privacy is taken extremely seriously here in Germany.

Yes, to the point nothing can get done anymore and e. g. having an outdated, non-digitalized healthcare system.

Tesla is doing it wrong. But Germany is also doing it wrong - just on the other extreme.

ChemSpider··on French workers protest plan to increase retirement age
That.Is.It. Simple math.

France will (have to) move to 64 and later to 67. If not this year, then in a few years.

Any many EU countries might even have to move to 70, Germany for sure.

People live longer (great), so they also have to work longer.

ChemSpider··on French workers protest plan to increase retirement age
Many countries in the EU have 67 as retirement age - so 64 does not feel a big issue to me. (France and Malta are the only one with 62)

ChemSpider··on Porsche, Ferrari e-fuel push at heart of EU engine debate
No miracle is needed:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium-ion_battery

The sodium-ion battery (NIB or SIB) is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions (Na+) as its charge carriers. Its working principle and cell construction are almost identical with those of lithium-ion battery (LIB) types, but replace lithium with sodium.

You can buy a car with this battery type already:

ChemSpider··on Porsche, Ferrari e-fuel push at heart of EU engine debate
Over the lifetime of the car, EV cars are already cheaper than ICE cars (lower maintenance, fuel costs, etc).
ChemSpider··on Rebranding the Wise design system for everyone (part 1)
But fixing this certainly would not require a complete and total redesign, or?
ChemSpider··on Chinese banks cause alarm as capital flight measures intensify
That possibility makes me really nervous. A few weeks ago I was pretty sure that Beijing would not be that stupid, and simply stick with sending tons of dual-use goods, to keep up the plausible deniability.

But Chinese rockets hitting Ukrainian kids in Kyiv/Europe? That would trigger dramatic sanctions. I don't think that is priced into the current world stock market.

ChemSpider··on BASF to cut 2,600 jobs as energy crisis hits German industry
Nothing wrong with some investments in China. But there is a difference between "investing" and making the "largest investment ever".

Basically their are betting half the company that China does not attack Taiwan and/or does not ship weapons to Russia and/or does not give them the "Jack Ma" treatment. Quite risky, if you ask me.

ChemSpider··on BASF to cut 2,600 jobs as energy crisis hits German industry
Fixed, thanks ;-)
ChemSpider··on BASF to cut 2,600 jobs as energy crisis hits German industry
Rising energy costs are only half the truth. "BASF to Cut 2,600 Jobs after losing 2 billions in Russian investments " could be the other headline. All their investments in Russia have been confiscated. This is a bit ironic, as BASF was on of the major forces that pushed Germany into its energy dependence from Russia.

And what did they learn from it? => Hey, look, China! Let's invest another 10 billion there.

They even fired Saori Dubourg just a few days ago - She was the only board member that disagreed with this China strategy.

ChemSpider··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
This article is a good example of how NOT to do science and analysis. It is a completely arbitrary mix of what the authors thinks are exceptional people.

To me it feels he wrote the conclusions first and then picked the people to support his theory.

ChemSpider··on IRIS²: The EU’s Response to Musk’s Starlink
> and if it wasn't for a few outliers in Scandinavia and the Baltics, it would be negligible

I agree that Estonia is doing great and a role model in many ways, but the by far biggest EU software company is still German: SAP
