In my experience large companies reserve part time employment for valued contributors with long tenure- usually they have title like principal or fellow, and contribute in ways that cannot be hired for.

Sometimes I daydream that we moved beyond text files and had a format with a UUID per line.

Version control could reliably track movement between files, we could identify copy and paste (and prompt when refactoring), and code coverage changes would be accurate.

That's not the worst I saw this week. I saw a floating dialog box that cannot be closed, that was on the right hand side obscuring the form that it was hassling you to complete. You had to only scroll down a third of a page at a time in order to complete the form.

The back will get hot since the oil improves the heat transfer from the front to the back. The sun will always heat the front, but as long as the heat transfer rate to the back is low enough it won't feel hot - your body will absorb the heat and reach an equilibrium temperature which feels natural.

If you have multiple hosts the set should not be the same, no? From the linked page the comparison is a set comparison: one host at hosta.example.com and one host at hostb.example.com each with their own cert bot won't conflict.

Another related pet peeve is when I see cyclists going the wrong way in a bike lane. On a 40 mph road a cyclist has a differential with traffic of 20-25 mph. An accident would be serious by likely non-fatal. When you ride the wrong you you add the speeds and make nearly all collisions fatal.

If you get an interview you are already on a short list. The process I usually see is 100's of applications -> screening by recruiter and hiring manager -> phone screen 10-20 -> coding challenge 3-7 -> onsite 2-3 -> hire 1.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. If you don't have time to do it right, what makes you think there is time to do it twice?

Sweet hack, thanks for sharing. I remember playing in the dark with luminous paper as a kid - If I remember correctly, I would take a hacked up disposable camera and put various objects in front of the paper before triggering the flash.

I imagine that you could improve the consistency and readability some by modeling the state of each pixel of paper. That way when the drum comes around you can compensate the exposure per pixel based on the current state to achieve better uniformity of display. In this way you could do exposure compensation on each row of output to make the display equally bright top to bottom. This would be similar to how a "no-refresh" epaper display works.

China has extremely high installation rate for solar water heaters. Personally I have never observed any grid-tie solar electric installations on residential buildings. My travels are largely confined to Fujian province, so perhaps they have caught on in other regions.

Check out the datasheet for this single row CCD sensor[1]. Look at pages 2 and 6, which show the block diagram and control signal waveforms. There is a single analog output pin. To read the device the "analog shift register" is used, which is a bucket brigade device to move the charge from the photo diode to the output buffer.

The request may have been to take a 24 foot segment and cut it into equal nearly 8 foot segments. Measuring all at once lets you avoid the last piece being notably shorter.

My perspective as well. When I was high school and college I went on a few cruises with my elderly grandparents. We had a blast. Every morning you wake up in a new city without the bother of packing bags or spending any time actually going there. Unlike airports, piers are frequently in the oldest most interesting part of the city and you can directly walk to see quite a bit.
