Like others are saying, though, Notion is much more geared for collaboration. I couldn't care much less about that, so here I am with Obsidian, still, years later.
All current models ship with 16GB so this isn't really true anymore.. 16GB will be good for most folks for years and years (most folks aren't doing heavy virtualization or other highly ram-intensive use cases).
>and the specs are so low they will underperform, or be obsolete in a few years.
...what?? People are still using OG M1 macs because they're still very capable machines. These things - especially the M4s - have crazy amounts of performance headroom.
RIP global power consumption
>/think and /nothink instructions: Use those words in the system or user message to signify whether Qwen3 should think. In multi-turn conversations, the latest instruction is followed.
By comparison, Gemma3's output (both 12b and 27b) seems to typically be more long/verbose, but not problematically so.
Their batteries, at least in my experience, have also been similarly long-lived and reliable over years. And yeah - like some others have said - I also get all my batteries from 'battery included' tools/deals. I don't think I've ever bought one by itself.
After trying Notion and experiencing the 'lock-in' for myself, I switched to Obsidian years ago - no regrets. Combined with Syncthing, it works surprisingly well - offering graceful/seamless editing of the same Notes across Windows desktop and multiple Macs, updating to the other devices in essentially real-time.
I'm no expert by any means, but have you ever actually worked with Germans?
The existence of Betriebsräte (Workers' Councils, as implemented in Germany), while not necessarily 'bad', comes with a mountain of bureaucracy...
Nowadays, I'd say 14" is the sweet spot. Compact enough to easily fit in a bag and be taken basically anywhere, without having to sacrifice much if anything in terms of functionality/capability.
With screen bezels reduced to almost nothing, a modern 14" is pretty comparable in size to a 12" model from yesteryear.
We're observing in real time - mostly via skyrocketing insurance rates - the impact & unsustainability of expensive, all-proprietary parts. Vehicles are getting totaled out now more than ever for things that should be repairable.
Speaking of diesel - what I really want is a simple plug-in hybrid truck or SUV (e.g. a USA Toyota Hilux or 4runner) with ~50-80 miles of battery-only range, and a diesel generator for 'indefinite' range extension.
A smaller battery with a range of 40-100 miles would allow most people to do their daily driving strictly on battery. Beyond that, a gas/diesel generator should kick in for range extension (or for towing).
You can bet that's exactly where this is going for the corporate world.
I'd like to replace my 25+ yr old system (gas furnace/AC) with a new gas furnace & heat pump so I can have the option of heating with gas or electricity... but when I ran this by an HVAC technician who was here for a service call, I got the same kind of exorbitant figures thrown at me with the heat pump in the equation.
Same technician wanted $750 to replace a control board when my furnace had gone out during a blizzard - I sourced my own & did it myself for <$150.
'llama.cpp-based' generally seems like the norm.
Ollama is just really easy to set up & get going on MacOS. Integral support like this means one less thing to wire up or worry about when using a local LLM as a drop-in replacement for OpenAI's remote API. Ollama also has a model library[1] you can browse & easily retrieve models from.
Another project, Ollama-webui[2] is a nice webui/frontend for local LLM models in Ollama - it supports the latest LLaVA for multimodal image/prompt input, too.
In reality, the most we'll likely see is a few people who successfully sue for their small piece of the pie, while the big companies carry on like nothing happened - further accelerating the transfer of wealth right to the top.
I really wish someone would make this happen.
I'm sure you will around Boca Chica, but they probably won't have much of a choice either. That said, it could be a pretty good 'proving ground' if they use them to run 120/240V equipment onsite.
