Calamitous··on Misinformation should be refuted, not censored
“People are so dumb, we have to protect them from ideas we think are dangerous”?
Calamitous··on Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower
Yes, back before Microsoft became a household word.
Calamitous··on Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower
The old “nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft” argument.
Calamitous··on Building an economy simulator from scratch
I did not expect to read through and run every simulation. But I did.
Calamitous··on Scientists figured out how to write in water
Ah, reddit is leaking again.
Calamitous··on The old have come to dominate American politics
> imagine what your workplace would be like if after holding a job 4-5 years

Hah, I wish we could hold on to engineers for 4-5 years…

Calamitous··on Touch Pianist
I had to switch to Safari for the menus to work correctly.
Calamitous··on Aardvark'd: The Fog Creek documentary, 18 years later
Ironically, after working in cubicles and hurk open floor plans for most of my career, now I have an office with a door. Ten feet from my bedroom. ;)
Calamitous··on Chrome now tracks users and shares a “topic” list with advertisers
Out of curiousity, what do you use instead?
Calamitous··on Farms that create habitat key to food security and biodiversity
> Do you trust your next door neighbors to become ag scientists to be good stewards of their land?

As someone who lives in a rural/agricultural area, yes.

Calamitous··on At Taser maker Axon, ex-staffers say loyalty meant being tased or tattooed
> getting fired seems like a much larger problem than being bad-mouthed online.

I’d argue the opposite: if I’m fired, I can get another job. If I’m bad-mouthed online, that can affect all future job prospects.

Calamitous··on Cyberpunk in the Nineties (1998)
I want the dystopia I was promised in my youth, not the one I got.
Calamitous··on Petition to stop France from forcing browsers like Firefox to censor websites
> It will be very easy to bypass, making this a very stupid law.

It’s not about being effective, it’s about making things illegal. It’s trivially easy to break the speed limit, but that doesn’t stop local police using it to collect millions of dollars of fines every year

Calamitous··on Firefox finally outperforming Google Chrome in SunSpider
How is Brave working against the user’s interests? Not being snarky, I’ve been using it for a while and it seems fine.
Calamitous··on It's 2023, so of course I'm learning Common Lisp
> i get downvoted by the lisp crowd every time i bring up that the repl isn't a differentiating feature anymore

I’d suggest it has more to do with tone than content.

Calamitous··on A proposal to build a sub-Saharan Africa electrical grid across 12 countries
What does this have to do with the west? Do the bad actions of Shell excuse those of China?
Calamitous··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
That’s one of the nice things about Kagi: you can lower our block content farms, and elevate sites like stack overflow.
Calamitous··on Structure of elusive boron monoxide finally determined after 83 years
I love his work. It’s filled with these pithy little gems:

> I'd call for all the chemists who've ever worked with a hexanitro compound to raise their hands, but that might be assuming too much about the limb-to-chemist ratio.

Calamitous··on Ten years of “Go: The good, the bad, and the meh”
> I wish the protobuf library wasn't awful

I’m curious what you don’t like about it? I haven’t used Go in anger, but I love protobufs, and it’s shocking that Go, of all languages, would have a substandard implementation.

Calamitous··on Ways to say no with grace and style (2021)
You would think. But while it’s not common, in my experience, it does happen. I recall one job I had in a startup where the CTO was a screamer; he’d literally storm around the programming pit shouting at everyone when he was in a mood.
Calamitous··on Reddit Doubles Down
FTA:

> the number of Reddits that have gone dark expanded from around 7,000 to more than 8,400

Annoyingly, there's no context for these numbers. Is this 10% of all subreddits? 90%? Does it cover half of all users? They're meaningless numbers that "sound big."

Calamitous··on Ask HN: What tech is under the radar with all attention on ChatGPT etc.?
“Locally hosted cloud infrastructure!”
Calamitous··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres
It’s not even the speed, it’s writing queries. The syntax is clunkier, and since you don’t have a nice clean schema, you end up doing a lot of jumping through hoops to check for the presence of keys/proper data types, etc. Or doing your basic data validation in your app instead of letting the database do its job.
Calamitous··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres
Most common one I’ve seen in the last 5-10 years: using a JSON column instead of putting in a lookup table, or instead of properly analyzing and normalizing your data.

That’s a mistake that you’ll be paying for for a while.

Calamitous··on Ask HN: Can Browsers Have a Universal Hotkey for Website Login?
Or when “log in” Is hidden in a menu, while “sign up” Is a nice clear button on the home page.
Calamitous··on LastPass breach gets worse
> One of the most frustrating things about the LastPass leak is that they still haven't provided all the information needed to determine whether a customer is at risk.

Worst case: it’s entirely possible they don’t know.

Calamitous··on Airlines lobbying FAA to have only one pilot in the cockpit
I suspect it has more to do with the availability of employees rather than the cost. But I’ll admit that’s based on my hearing anecdotal tales rather than hard facts.
Calamitous··on Soil in Midwestern US is eroding 10 to 1k times faster than it forms
I think you are vastly overestimating the number of people who want to be farmers.
Calamitous··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
Another nice thing about Kagi is that you can eliminate domains from your search results. Obvious content farms are pretty easy to spot and remove.
Calamitous··on Seeking the productive life: Some details of my personal infrastructure (2019)
I’d be curious to hear what you’re using on iPhone for voice-to-text. I’ve tried a few things and the results have been pretty awful for me.
