Buffout··on Will self driving cars ever become a reality?
No in a sense where car drives trough streets of city that doesn't have mobile phone signal, or is not designed for autonomous cars, and there is no contractors that can help you.

Yes in a sense where there is fleet of contractors that can take over vehicle any time if something goes wrong.

Buffout··on Ask HN: How chat GPT is/will impact you?
Problem is I don't know what is the question. Maybe we should build another AI to devise a question.
Buffout··on Ask HN: Martian Organisms
If you look at it backwards in time , all life on Mars moved to Earth at some point. We can speculate Why? did something happened on Mars in Future.
Buffout··on Why Not Mars
I can relate to this argument in principle. Building base here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_of_Inaccessibility_resear... for example would be a great exercise for building base on Mars.

We could learn great things, and maybe reuse technology for going on Mars.

Buffout··on Ask HN: How does a hobby programmer get hired?
Hobby programmer or programmer at job.

Pick one.

Too much screen time if you do both.

Buffout··on Ask HN: What did you learn in 2022
Forth, little bit of cybernetics, assembly...
Buffout··on Ask HN: Any advice on becoming more organized?
List and categorize and quantize everything. If needed get your self spreadsheet software like Libre Office.
Buffout··on To be productive, be prepared
Yeah , and don't mistake work for learning. If you learn while you work you will spend 10x more time.
Buffout··on To be productive, be prepared
Good organization and code search is half of productivity. It is always better to find you already have something coded then code it again.
Buffout··on The Zen of Forth
There's program much like that in the book Starting Forth, called "File system" it has 3 screens, if you take only what you need , you may be done in 1 or two screens, and you can store other data in that system like names and phone numbers.

trick is you erase record memory you don't need , which then gets reused on next record add, it checks if it is empty.

Buffout··on The Zen of Forth
Yes, if you don't use tool then it doesn't matter.

With FORTH every WORD is a little program that you use like million of times if it's any good.

Buffout··on The Zen of Forth
For me it's good to know the inner details of the tool I'm using. And when I compile executable I know purpose of every byte in it. That's not possible with other languages like GO, that gives you 2MB hello world executable
Buffout··on The Zen of Forth

   > "what software do you build in Forth?" they say "Forths"
When you learn that Forth is a broad term that can mean a shell, programming language, application, operating system. compiler, editor, block system, style, etc..., it becomes a little clearer.

Those that ask of purpose of FORTH, is same as those that ask purpose of above mentioned things.

Buffout··on The slab and the permacomputer (2021)
Getting online is not the true purpose of owning computer. You don't need TLS. you kind of already have all sorts of computers that can handle TLS, so why build another one?

UXN was developed out of necessity , because some software stopped working in certain environments. AFAIK author is living on a boat. and doesn't have unlimited electricity and internet access. Their electricity supply depends on weather.

When you look at it like that, information security is largely first world country problem. whilst 3rd world country is happy if it has internet and electricity at all.

Buffout··on Saying “sup” with `net send`
NET SEND was fun because it did true purpose of computer programs , amplify your communication and computation capability.
