Brusco_RF··on Why some researchers think I’m wrong about social media and mental illness
Of course people have an input. You can buy it from someone else who makes it a different way, or not at all.

Its a little disingenuous to imply that a vacuum is safer than Hydrogen just because it doesn't combust. Have it spring a leak near the passenger cabin and watch what happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPoVuFtWs_Y&t=7s

Thats a very interesting point that I've never considered. Where can I read more about that? Is there a study you can link me to?

When you frame it like that it becomes the tale as old as time; absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Brusco_RF··on Can we end megafires? These companies are trying to
This is a peeve of mine that I see absolutely everywhere, none of our recent fires hold a candle (so to speak) to what was going on before humans started managing forests. Take a look at this chart from the UN[1], specifically pre-1960.

I guarantee every chart of wildfires you'll see on a major news site will begin after 1960. Typically they want to push the narrative that climate change is causing wildfires when in fact wildfires have everything to do with forest management and nothing to do with climate change. They are of course also ignoring the fact that climate models predict a _wetter_ planet, not a drier one, if current trends continue.

Reminds me of how governments "solve" problems. ie, we introduced regulation A to solve problem A, which unintentionally causes side effect B and C. So we create regulations B and C which create market distortions E F G and H....

Lets not kid ourselves, the main reason HN is much higher quality than Reddit is because of the users. It could all change tomorrow if they find out about us.

People forget that Reddit used to look a lot like HN does today in like 2006-10 before the Digg exodus. Today Reddit is almost entirely kids.

I find "throttling" or "shadow banning" to be far more objectionable than simply banning / removing comments.

At least if my post is deleted I can tell. But when companies artificially limit the reach of content they do not like, you might never know.

Facebook openly admits to doing this. They are playing god by curating which information is worthy / unworthy of being seen, as well as presenting a warped view of reality to their users.

I spent a large part of my formative years on Reddit and I agree with everything you just said. I don't know how to fix the issue, but I have some ideas.

One would be a "mod action audit." Each subreddit, or perhaps each moderator, would have a score indicating what % of comments are removed. Some random chunk of the removed content could be reviewed by auditors to determine what % were just spam and what came from legitimate users.

This way when I see a community where >50% of content is removed, I know that what I'm seeing is not organic.

Brusco_RF··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
Sounds like you are experiencing poorly targeted ads if 99% of yours aren't things you need :)

Question. If your ads were perfectly targeted in that 100% of advertised products were something that you're interested in, is that not ideal? Isn't that what companies like Google and Facebook are trying to do? Wouldn't you be happier if you didn't get the Wellness / Nutrition / Viagra ads?

Brusco_RF··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
As usual with matters of opinion, there is a positive and negative way to frame everything. You framed the negative. Allow me to frame the positive:

The human condition has been improved now that we all spend $3/mo on deodorant.

Brusco_RF··on Europe braces for mobile network blackouts
You missed a critical point that by increasing the charge rate of the battery you've also increased the load on the grid, exacerbating the original problem.
Brusco_RF··on The hyperinflation gallery
Yes, I have. I greedily want to keep as much of my money as I can so I buy the cheapest goods available, sending money to the greedy corporation who offers goods at the lowest price.

This stubborn hand-wavy argument that prices stay high due to greed smacks of economic illiteracy and White House propaganda.

Brusco_RF··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: an in-depth explainer
Yes that is an absolute statement (and maybe an incorrect one!) but it's scope is psychedelics in relation to GEB, not all possible drugs in all possible situations
Brusco_RF··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: an in-depth explainer
Your question is loaded in a different way than you might have anticipated, it presupposes that truth DOES come from psychedelics as well as from reason.

It's true that many people feel a deep connection to and understanding of consciousness during a psychedelics trip. Did they actually gain any knowledge about how their own brains work in the same way that a neuroscientist or ML expert might understand it? I contend that they did not, even if they feel that they did.

In a similar way a drunk might suddenly feel that he has the ability to dance. That's hardly a replacement for salsa classes.

Of course there are exceptions. Many brilliant people take psychedelics and credit them with breakthroughs in their fields, that can't be ignored. But you'll notice that its always _in their field_, ie they were already thinking about a problem and psychedelics offered them a new perspective.

Brusco_RF··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: an in-depth explainer
That's quite the strawman, I don't know anyone who says that. And if they did I would ask them if they drank coffee or if they were aware that a good chunk of young professionals are on ADHD medication
Brusco_RF··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: an in-depth explainer
Getting hit in the head can also change how someone perceives things. I think the above commenter was expressing frustration with the popular notion that taking drugs is some sort of shortcut to understanding consciousness, dynamic systems, etc
Brusco_RF··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
I doubt it. Thats a great way to murder your battery in the wilderness
Brusco_RF··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
Even if it is a little worse, NO ONE is shelling out $600 for an InReach after this announcement. I am an avid backpacker who has resisted SatComs (partly for the price, partly because they ruin the experience maaaaan) and I can tell you with certainty that this put to bed any last chance of me purchasing an InReach
Brusco_RF··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
None of the RF ports come out to a connector so no that couldnt really work.

You CAN get high gain antennas for things like your WiFi router, it's my goto when an elderly relative complains about their wifi range.

You can't actually increase power with an (inactive) antenna but you CAN change it's radiation pattern. The higher gain omnidirectional antennas just take a radiation pattern that looks like a sphere (0dB gain) and squashes it into a donut shape. So you get more range laterally around the antenna at the expense of less above and below it

Brusco_RF··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
You can't really shrink a phased array.

If you use smaller antenna elements you must use a higher frequency, and higher frequencies are more attenuated by the earth's atmosphere (generally, when you get to THz there is a window or else visible light wouldn't be able to penetrate) so they have no chance of making it to a satellite.

If you use less elements you lose all your gain in the side lobes, as the other commenter mentioned
