Not only that, but the person reading the essay is also biased and will select for students who align with their bias. It is a terrible admission metric.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence :)

You would also need to prove to me that a deterministic universe where individuals do not have the capacity to calculate the future is somehow distinct from a non-deterministic universe from the individual's perspective

Choice either is or isn't an illusion. YOU presented that dichotomy. I simply took the other side of it.

I understand that we do not live in a vacuum. Yes of course we respond to stimuli, that's part of what it means to be alive. What I am advocating for is more agency in your own life.

You are the one in the drivers seat. Act like it and your life will be better. Pretend you don't have agency and your life will get worse. It's really that simple. I think that's why your original comment triggered me so much.

They use it because it allows them to ignore standardized test scores and just do admissions based on their own preferences. They used less merit-based metrics because they don't WANT a meritocracy.

Question. Which tells you more about a student:

1. An essay that was probably written by chatGPT then edited by the students parents

2. A test taken in a supervised, controlled, timed environment

People literally buy packs of cigarettes with graphic pictures of bloody lungs full of tumors on them. They are not being fooled about what a cigarette does.

I think it is a devils advocate because there are plenty of people who think the state should disallow gambling by consenting adults.

As for when coercion is used... I don't think it's useful to play devils advocate for coercion. That one is settled, everyone already agrees that coercion is bad.

I get that. I just never really understood why higher education and semi-pro athletics are so deeply linked together. They are totally different things!

Yeah the SAT is the worst admissions metric, besides all the other ones.

What would you use in its place? You think grades don't have bias?

Brusco_RF··on Children of alumni no longer have admissions edge at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt
Yeah I see this take all the time. Admissions offices are allowed to take a student's means into account! So in deciding between two students with equal SAT scores, one from a Greenwich private school and one from South Tucson, the one from Tucson is the more impressive student.

Affirmative action was misguided because it assumed that because one student was Korean and the other Mexican, the Mexican kid must be disadvantaged. Besides the fact that there's an inherently racist worldview baked into that, Newsflash! There are tons of poor Korean kids and rich Mexicans!

Allow me to play devils advocate. If a consenting adult wants to blow their whole paycheck at the casino, who are you to stop them? The casino did not trick or coerce the gambler. The rules are known and unchanging. According to the principles of freedom, you can't interfere with what two consenting parties agree to on their own. Why do you get to insert yourself in this transaction?
Brusco_RF··on ‘No way out’: how video games use tricks from gambling to attract big spenders
Well thats... a take. Do you believe you have any agency at all in your life? Or is everything controlled by the puppet master?

I see this ad nauseum in the weekly "f*ck cars" thread. Some young ideologue wants to create their personal utopia by banning cars, parking lots and highways and building trains.

> People like their cars. I don't think they want this

"They would like subways more"

> Are you sure about that? Phoenix is geographically massive. People tow their boats, horses, and trailers to remote places here

"That's not very green of them"

All models are incorrect, but some are useful.

Fine, you win Timon3, earth is not a blackbody because blackbodies don't actually exist.

People think that the laws make the society, not the other way around. They want people to live THEIR way, and they see the force of government as the fastest route to obedience.
Brusco_RF··on ‘No way out’: how video games use tricks from gambling to attract big spenders
You can label it, sure. The question is should we outlaw it.
Brusco_RF··on A stationary jet stream is fueling intense heat worldwide
Earth is a blackbody[1]. We receive heat from the sun in the form of radiation. We also radiate heat out to space.

This is not even close to true. Most of the world is still wilderness, and always will be. I'd love to drop you in the middle of Siberia, northern Canada, or the Amazon and watch you try to find a road or hut :)

Hell, I could drop you in a huge wilderness region in my state (Arizona) where you might walk a dozen miles before you encounter a "trail" (loosly defined).

Honestly, I don't know how you could end up with a take like that unless you're a European who hasn't travelled much.

Brusco_RF··on A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves
Consider two cars with fading batteries at the end of their lifecycles. They are on their last start before needing to be replaced. They both have exactly enough energy to start the car with nothing left over, however one car has this system installed so it needs to flash the headlights/wipers/windows first. That car fails to start
Brusco_RF··on A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves
Couldn't a thief just observe the car's wipers/headlights/blinkers to obtain the secret combination that unlocks the starter ?
Brusco_RF··on A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves
We're considering the entire battery lifecycle. So the correct way to think about this change is:

More energy required to start engine --> Minimum battery health required to start engine increases --> battery lifecycle decreases.

It will necessarily be worse than the fixed oven.

Only 20 minutes? That's short for an RF guy rant! I used to work with ~20 mmWave guys. All older dudes, and MAN could they talk. There was one guy who's last name was "Park." We called it "getting Parked" when he would park his ass at your desk and prevent you from getting any work done for 1-2 hours at a time

What you are describing is "expropriation." Cuba and Venezuela both did it. So if you want the US to look more like Venezuela, keep it up

Any genuinely terrible idea should be an uphill battle politically.

Do you know how much you, personally, benefit from modern material science? Do you think our nation could even operate with out Bayer, Dupont, 3M and the likes?

Brusco_RF··on Injunction issued in case about social media pressure from US Government
I disagree. At most you'll see parents deciding that their tax dollars should not be used to stock a school library with "obscene" books in schools. That is not an infringement on speech, those authors are free to publish and sell in any other market.
Brusco_RF··on Injunction issued in case about social media pressure from US Government
You aren't under the impression that the 1st amendment protects government speech, are you?
Brusco_RF··on Injunction issued in case about social media pressure from US Government
They don't have enough channels to do that? They have to do it via veiled threat to a speech platform to delete users posts?

How can anyone defend this behavior? Just because it's your guy doing it? If Trump was telling Twitter to delete posts that hurt his re-election chances would you feel this same way?
