Go look at a map of Tucson. Look at where the Titan II missile museum is, then look where Biosphere 2 is. Now tell me how much it would cost to build public transit between those two locations, and how many people would take it.

Trailheads are fundamentally incompatible with transit. They might be philosophical opposites. A trailhead accessible by rail is a trailhead I don't want to be at.

Not everywhere in the world is exactly the same. Stop trying to force a top-down solution that works in Europe on a geographically massive city like Tucson

What? No they don't. Not without considerable adverse effects at least. You're not referring to price ceilings, are you?

Wow, you sent me down a serious rabbit hole. That core looks awesome, and the ring bus blew my mind [1].

What is the practical difference between a very wide SIMD processor vs very many single-instruction processors? Is there any? They say this processor is comprised of 16 "slices", each 265B SIMD + 1 MiB cache. Is that different at all from having 16 265B processors?

Since I've got you, allow me to apologize for all the knee-jerk cynics in this thread. I trust you will continue to ship great product and that your incentives will remain aligned with those of your users.

Just pinky promise me that you won't make Arduino IDE a subscription :)

To nitpick your nitpick, the earth radiates more energy than it receives because it is very radioactive. And because it is cooling.
Brusco_RF··on Extreme poverty: How far have we come, and how far do we still have to go?
External aid can't, but external investment can. The greatest reduction in extreme poverty in human history happened in China starting in the second half of last century continuing to the present. It was a result of the West building factories and outsourcing labor there.

Unfortunately a prerequisite for foreign investment is political stability. Nobody is going to build a factory in a war zone, which is why Sudan Somalia and Ethiopia look the way they do.

It's a delicate situation and I don't think anyone really knows the best way to help.

This is disinformation and you should delete it. I don't use that term lightly, Nuclear FUD is spread by Russia to keep the west dependent on their oil, and you're helping them whether you know it or not.

In reality, Uranium is mostly mined by leaching which is the least destructive form of mining. Not to mention the quantity actually mined is several orders of magnitude less than other things we mine in much more destructive fashions like Copper, nickel, zinc etc

Brusco_RF··on A place where no humans will tread for 100k years
Right? I also find this journalism style infuriating. Very egocentric.

I like the Economist's style, articles don't even have authors listed and when they must talk about themselves they say "your correspondent" which I perceive as much more humble

When speakers of a dying language learn a dominant one they don't lose their way of thinking, rather they adapt the dominant language to their needs. In this way the dominant language evolves. It's why there are ~180k english words but only 1200 Sindarian words.

While I agree that cultural loss is tragic, consider that it is inevitable. Homo Sapiens have existed for ~200,000 years. We only have SOME traces of SOME cultures for say 10k of those years. So from that lens, the vast majority of human culture has already been lost.

Brusco_RF··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
For me it's the colleagues. Rubbing elbows with people much smarter and further in their careers than I am is worth making the ~20 min commute. But any incentive provides the same effect.
Brusco_RF··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
I agree with that point but disagree about the distribution. I myself am a 5, I go in about half the time. Obviously we can only speculate about others
Brusco_RF··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
Respectfully, this is an example of rigid thinking that isn't productive or accurate.

Apply marginal thinking the way economists do. People's propensity to return to the office falls on a spectrum ranging from 0 ( the people who are already back in their cubicles ) to 9 ( "You'll need a SWAT team to get me back to the office" ).

A 5 on that scale is a marginal worker. Provide an incentive for them to return, like a nice office, and they become a 4 and return to the office. Now give a nice office to a population of 1000 workers who are distributed evenly over the above spectrum. They all move down by 1, and about 1/10th of them return to the office.

Saying "People who like WFH will never want to return to the office" is only true of the 8's and 9's, not of the marginal worker. They are the ones who respond to incentives.

Brusco_RF··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
I actually have less faith in social scientists to design an unbiased study on a sensitive topic in 2023 than I did in 2008. That was my only point
Brusco_RF··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
There used to be sabretooth tigers outside your room that wanted to hurt you. I am not persuaded by that argument based on the simple fact that the world is orders of magnitude less scary than it used to be.

My theory is that it just got easier to not leave your room. That wasn't possible in the sabretooth tiger days, you'd starve. Now it's easy.

Brusco_RF··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
You correctly point out that the 2016 study might be flawed, but you don't seem to consider the same of the newer study. Why?
Brusco_RF··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
This is the central debate in the gender war, the question of nature vs. nurture in relation to gender roles. We will probably be debating this until the end of time because it is somewhat unethical to raise a baby in a padded cell and see if they prefer dolls or legos.

I must admit I used to be on team nurture before I had my daughter. But seeing the way that she personified the lego figures and takes care of them (cooks them "food", drives them to school, etc) changed my mind. You can give dolls to boys too, but they're more likely to hit each other with them than nurture them. That drove home that most of this is really built into the firmware.

Brusco_RF··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
You're off by 4 orders of magnitude. These "rain panels" generate <<1W/m2 even in heavy rain.
Brusco_RF··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
Freetown gets more rain in one August week than my town (Scottsdale) gets in a full YEAR
Brusco_RF··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
Even the most optimistic reading has these "rain panels" well under 1W/m^2. For comparison, peak solar irradiance is something like 1400W/m^2.

This webpage has already burned more energy than that panel will ever produce.

Brusco_RF··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
Seems misleading to even mention 200W in any capacity at all.
Brusco_RF··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
You sent me down a rabbit hole. Holy crap! The AVERAGE rainfall in Sierra Leone in August is over 600mm... 23 inches!
Brusco_RF··on Where did our belief in abundance come from?
Technology can capture energy, and the amount of energy we capture increases every year.
