BrianHenryIE··on How virtualisation came to Apple Silicon Macs
I thought it would be convenient to virtualize an old MacBook 12" I have onto my M1 MBA so I installed a MacOS VM with Parallels and plugged in my Time Machine backup to restore it to the VM and was surprised to learn:

> It is currently not possible to connect any USB device to a macOS Arm VM yet.

BrianHenryIE··on Kyutai AI research lab with a $330M budget that will make everything open source
I just see now, there are two Gifskis, one Rust, one Swift. It's worth looking at the maintainer of the Swift one, he has 1000+ repos, many with 1000+ stars.

BrianHenryIE··on DEA Launches Crack Down on San Francisco Fentanyl Dealing
None of that is to suggest I want fentanyl around. I've had one friend die from it and another is a user – anytime I hear from his mother or brother my heart drops, fearing the worst.

But the war on drugs is a comical failure.

The Onion – Drugs Win Drug War:

BrianHenryIE··on DEA Launches Crack Down on San Francisco Fentanyl Dealing
Lol. Maybe they'll have their first success in their drug war when they eliminate drugs in the Tenderloin! My advice would be to start somewhere smaller.

> authorities have seized nearly 50 kilos of fentanyl and 12 kilos of meth off of Tenderloin streets

Irrelevant stat. They could seize a billion kilos – but are the drugs still available? Yes. The war on drugs is impotent.

> So if you think you're going to outlast us, you're wrong. If you think you're going to adapt and outsmart us, you're wrong.

They're right. Never, ever, will the human desire for drugs be extinguished. And coupled with a little business acumen, the DEA will be outlasted and outsmarted.

BrianHenryIE··on How to Do a TypeScript Conversion
Is there any automated tool that can add types? I have Playwright E2E tests – it seems reasonable that the type each variable is used as could be recorded and the code annotated with that.
BrianHenryIE··on Why Do Young Americans Support Hamas? Look at TikTok
I'll revisit this in a year. And you'll eat your words. You should be ashamed.
BrianHenryIE··on Why Do Young Americans Support Hamas? Look at TikTok
You're deluded if you think this colonial expansion is anything other than genocide.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/31/un-official-re...

BrianHenryIE··on Why Do Young Americans Support Hamas? Look at TikTok
It's mostly pro-Palestine. Some pro-Israel. It's disingenuous to imply people who are opposed to genocide support the aims of Hamas. You're conflating the two because you need to distort the evil of what is happening. Hamas were the bad guys on October 7, Israel have been the bad guys every day since, the children in Gaza were never the bad guys.
BrianHenryIE··on The destruction of Gaza's internet is complete
Get a grip. The UN has the list. It's behind:

> Password-protected access for humanitarian agencies > > Click here to access

If I posted any other source you'd dismiss that too.

BrianHenryIE··on The destruction of Gaza's internet is complete
> Is there a list published of all the causalities and their status?

Yes. By the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

https://www.ochaopt.org/data/casualties

And I'm not entertaining the rest of your questions.

BrianHenryIE··on The destruction of Gaza's internet is complete
UNICEF:

> We have lost touch with our colleagues in Gaza. I'm extremely concerned about their safety and another night of unspeakable horror for one million children in Gaza. All humanitarians and the children and families they serve MUST be protected. Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director

BrianHenryIE··on An aborted experiment with server Swift
> like BoringSSL, but Swift-native solutions are becoming more common.

I've seen this one, "Move away from BoringSSL", actively in development (PR opened two weeks ago):

BrianHenryIE··on Semantic Versioning 2.0 (2013)
Did you just argue that version numbers that do not have a spec are less arbitrary than the ones that do? Surely its entire point is to (at least attempt to) solve the gripe you seem to have.
BrianHenryIE··on Celebrity Flights
Sure, but it's important to put that in the context of the vast majority of the world's population who never fly, me who flies maybe three times a year, and people who flight weekly or more for the purpose of entertainment or a luxury lifestyle.

Make it progressively more expensive to fly more miles to moderate the excesses; offer tax breaks where it is beneficial for the entire community.

BrianHenryIE··on Interoperability: Swift’s Super Power
The article is about how great it is now to use on Windows.

I have projects using Swift on AWS Lambda and on Arduino.

BrianHenryIE··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
Use Zigbee, which the Philips Hue blubs are anyway – I haven't used the Philips app in years.

BrianHenryIE··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
Nice to see the app that highlights dietary restrictions in real-time in the camera view.

I tried to make that in 2017, before Apple had their own OCR API. It was using Tesseract (via gali8/Tesseract-OCR-iOS) but the performance just wasn't quite there yet.

BrianHenryIE··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Seriously?

> Several states grant some right for cyclists to travel in lanes with cars, but in practice that's absurd.

Which I'll translate for you, from you:

> ~It's absurd for cyclists to use the roads

So, how do I get to where I need to go?

BrianHenryIE··on You're a cyclist who was just struck by a car driver. Why it was your fault
Since I don't drive, if I want to get somewhere that doesn't have public transport going there, are you suggesting I should not be able to go there?
BrianHenryIE··on Objective-C Internals
Nothing comes to mind that’s similar to that first link. I’m really just replying to emphasize to others how great it is. I learned a ton from it.

BrianHenryIE··on Personal details of all Northern Ireland police officers released by mistake
> During the Troubles, police officers in Northern Ireland were regularly attacked by republican paramilitary groups.

They weren't attacked by Unionist paramilitaries because the police and the Unionist paramilitaries were the same people.

BrianHenryIE··on GitHub Actions and vanity metrics
Particularly "license" badges, which just repeat information already elsewhere on the main repo page.
BrianHenryIE··on Free prison phone calls boost family ties, rehabilitation
> Doing what CA does

California is the most desirable place in the world to live.

BrianHenryIE··on Free prison phone calls boost family ties, rehabilitation
Exactly. The court assigned a punishment based on the crime. The entire point of separating legislating/policing/judicial is to keep things as objective as possible. The suggestion that someone deserves a punishment they weren't assigned is abhorrent. It's not far off excusing police beatings.
BrianHenryIE··on Alcohol without the hangover – scientists are finding ways
I presume it's down to the "therapeutic index" (how close a fun dose is to a dangerous dose) (although alcohol is much the same).

I agree it is a nice drug but one friend of mine did have his family stage an intervention because of his abuse of it.

BrianHenryIE··on Ring is having a major outage
Have the cameras been jailbroken? I have a "Ring stick up cam battery" that I don't want to connect to the cloud.
BrianHenryIE··on FDA says aspartame is safe, disagreeing with WHO finding

BrianHenryIE··on Top secret U.S. Navy system heard titan implosion days ago
There was an Argentinian one, 2017.

> The information about the possible explosion was received on Thursday from the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization, or CTBTO, an international body that runs a global network of listening posts designed to check for secret atomic blasts.
