BoyWizard··on "Put down the crack pipes" doesn't go so well
One of the people I worked with used the expression 'We're not saving babies here!' when people were stressing to get stuff done. Until one day someone in the meeting burst into tears and ran out. Turns out they previously had a miscarriage.
BoyWizard··on Ask HN: Any Bitcoin Millionaires on HN?
A single person cashing out can cause a 'small' drop of 15%? Imagine the chaos if the USD crashed 15%. That's recession territory.
BoyWizard··on Show HN: TheBigDB - A simpler open database of facts
It's still a fact, the context affects the meaning of the statement.
BoyWizard··on Show HN: Cap'n Proto, by the ex-maintainer of Protocol Buffers

my comment has nothing at all to do with my job
Correct, but your comment has everything to do with your attitude.
BoyWizard··on Comcast injecting JS
They have a comment in the script

// Intended use is to display browser notifications for critical and time sensitive alerts.
I imagine you can rack up a fair amount of usage before checking emails, only to find you went over your cap a few hours ago.
BoyWizard··on Rails' Insecure Defaults
But it's still very easy to grep through your codebase and find them, unlike some other issues which can be very context sensitive and far harder to find quickly.
BoyWizard··on There's a Hole in 1,951 Amazon S3 Buckets
No, he went to jail because after that, he wrote a script, scraped through all the URLs and collected private information, then bragged in IRC about stuff he could do with it.
BoyWizard··on Researcher sets up illegal 420,000 node botnet for IPv4 Internet map

To further verify our sample data, we developed a small binary that could be uploaded to insecure devices.

BoyWizard··on Australia Post's free Amazon locker-style service
This service is amazing. I've been using the pilot for about 6 months and it's the best thing they've done. Get an email or SMS about a package and a code, rock up, punch your name and the code, the locker pops open and you get your package!
BoyWizard··on Ask HN: Advice for some possible founders in a (semi-)unique situation?
Just build it!

Don't worry about all the other distractions. You might works on it for a week then find the reason why nobody else has done it.

BoyWizard··on Resistor hack turns a Nvidia GTX690 into a Quadro K5000 or Tesla K10
You'll find that adding the resistor changes the ID the card sends to the drivers, and that there is other differences in the hardware (so it doesn't change the 'model' of the card). It just so happens that it enables 3 monitors in Linux (this is already enabled in Windows).
BoyWizard··on Port scanning /0 using insecure embedded devices
Uploading and running executable code on other people's devices without their permission is absolutely illegal, regardless if it's exposed or not. I would be pissed if someone did this on any of my devices.
BoyWizard··on Three Months to Scale NewsBlur
Based on the Github page, I would imagine Redis as a cache, MongoDB to store the 'non-relational data' (quoted from the GH page - I'm guessing the actual articles and such) and Postgres for the other application stuff - accounts, preferences, subs, etc.
BoyWizard··on Leselys: Personal self-hosted RSS reader
Looks good, but the demo is broken if you access it over HTTPS in Chrome

[blocked] The page at https://leselys.herokuapp.com/ ran insecure content from http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.9.1.min.js.
BoyWizard··on Bitcoin drops 10USD in less than 4 hours
It's not that instant real-money transactions are happening, but if I owe you $5 USD, I can say "I'll pay you 0.1142BTC" and the value to you is the same (as others have said, as long as the exchange rate doesn't fluctuate too much)
BoyWizard··on Bitcoin drops 10USD in less than 4 hours
The thing is, it doesn't matter. As far as I know, nobody prices anything in Bitcoins, they price things in USD/AUD/<insert currency> and then convert that amount to Bitcoins for the transaction.

You might end up paying 1.00 BTC, or 0.6 BTC, but it still works out to the be same in USD/AUD/<currency> (numbers made up for example)

BoyWizard··on Namecheap now officially accepts Bitcoin
If I have a problem with an online purchase that I can't sort out with the merchant, my bank is more than happy to compensate me for it.

Not possible with Bitcoin.

BoyWizard··on Today's Outage Post Mortem
Two things:

1. That video of the BGP routes disappearing is awesome, and

2. A 40 minute outage sounds bad, but consider the following timeline (based on the writeup):

> T+0: route change made, propagates

> T+10: Response team online, attempting local fixes

> T+30: Routers across 23 data centres in 14 countries hard reset and networks coming back up.

BoyWizard··on Why I won't be taking United Airlines again
> Almost no flight attendants walked by that seat during the whole 15+ hours of the flight, but I got up multiple times to look for an attendant

> The couple beside me ordered wine, and drank for most of the flight

> I won’t even talk about the small “breakfast” they served just before arriving in Sydney.
