Bluestein··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
I've always wondered how they are actually making ends meet, if at all, that is, what their budget looks like.-
Bluestein··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
This, is the first time I have not only made this comment, but opined on this issue at all, actually.-

Unless these people start offering free, unlimited inference for a cautionary period so we can test the new model without an up-front (re-)investment, I am not touching this load-bearing pile of neuralese spew with a ten thousand token pole.-

Bluestein··on RavynOS: Pre-alpha open-source OS based on Darwin, FreeBSD, Apple open-source
The entire pace of releases itself made everything more "breathable" and (ostensibly) higher quality.-

PS: Compare to today, with code slop (and good agent-mediated code: It also increases overall speed).-

Bluestein··on Codex users debate the new Pet feature

... poor sap: The sword was amongst the very few possessions found in his rented room when he died, suddenly and peniless.-

Very strangely fitting: using Jobs "bicycle for the mind" to compose this in his honor :)

And, perhaps (?), that ties in with the GUI being the most proprietary thing here, thus, them building that last/less or wanting to de-emphasize it?

> Why workout when everyone's going to die?

I regret to actually say this, and mean no controversy - but, I have been actually asking myself just that - and, not in the "workout or not" sense, alone. In the "does anything have a point", way. Apologies.-

PS. To indeed contribute something: I am a big fan of the "doing things because of the joy of doing things" itself theory of it all, which is, seemingly, an antidote.-

Bluestein··on Mental Health Workers Say Algorithmic Triage Is Hurting Patients
(Heck, if I may: they have, at best, not been disproven to be non-harmful for people without mental issues, while - it seems, more and more - proving quite harmful to those "borderline" or with underlying, unsurfaced issues.-)

PS: The FAQ speaks to this somewhat:

"This is a huge effort. Y'all must be crazy!
Yes. Here's to the crazy ones... because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do.

In all seriousness, though, it's not my first rodeo. I have no illusions about the scale of building an OS or how long projects like Haiku, ReactOS or GNUStep took to get usable. This is just something I like doing in my Copious Spare Time™ and that I hope will be useful someday.

I've always liked Apple's design and elegance, but am not thrilled with the direction of recent macOS® or how closed the hardware has become. And I'm a big believer in open source. So ... let's build something that feels as elegant, without all the lock-in, and maybe (just maybe) I can get it to a point that reasonably useful Mac apps build & run on it. And if not, we'll build a lot of cool pieces along the way and learn a ton. I'm OK with that."

Bluestein··on National Association of Consumer Advocates vs. Polymarket et al.
"Vaca Daffan filed a lawsuit [...] in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on behalf of the National Association of Consumer Advocates against Blockratize, Inc. d/b/a Polymarket and related entities, as well as Shayne Coplan and Matthew Modabber. The complaint alleges that the defendants orchestrated a sweeping and flagrantly deceptive marketing campaign that lures Americans into risking real money while obscuring how likely people are to lose. The complaint also accuses the defendants of unfairly targeting college-aged individuals with manipulative ads for their platforms."

Bluestein··on The ArtQrCode a twist on the classic black and white Quick Response Code
They seem borderline compliant. Rather than function, seems to me the artists have bent the aesthetic of digital/QR "into" the artwork, with that as priority rather than the other way around, like it's usually done (trying to arrange QR components artistically).-
