BlueTemplar··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
Why then does Path of Exile (especially the new 2, which is only 1-2 steps in popularity below Silksong right now on SteamDB) bothers with still including a predownload torrent on every big update ?

IPv6 ??
BlueTemplar··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
I'm still puzzled after all these years : why would anyone use search engine bangs instead of directly configuring custom searches from their browser's URL bar ?
BlueTemplar··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
Isn't the issue with this is that you would first have to know which bible to use ?
BlueTemplar··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
It isn't so much as bad, as inevitable. And as you say, Wikipedia has the built-in antidote with the other language versions and the Talk pages.
BlueTemplar··on Ban me at the IP level if you don't like me
Wikipedia seems like they might check all the boxes here, have they done anything ?

Piracy + supporting authors (that aren't Amazon-exclusive) in other ways seems to be more ethical ?
BlueTemplar··on A high schooler writes about AI tools in the classroom
Plenty of people do not work out today.

Soldiers do still go through physical training, and this seems to be a closer metaphor than swordsmanship.

Quite scary in its implications for the future.

BlueTemplar··on Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people
I agree that it is still too early to call it, but note how SteamOS still hasn't officially come out on laptops/desktops yet.
BlueTemplar··on ReMarkable Paper Pro Move
Wait, but why would you still use Amazon ?
BlueTemplar··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Well yes, but that's partially on you − I might understand your average person not being wary about these issues, but we're on Hacker News here, these issues have been discussed for decades.

The sites also shouldn't be 'lost', don't they have a way to register another kind of login from the same one ? And you can always make a new, platform-free account − better do that sooner than later !

Please name and shame the websites (like Advent of Code and Rebble) that only allow a login through platforms. And services that only allow Google Authenticator.

> You'll have to forfeit popular messengers that your family, friends, landlord, etc. are on; no more mobile banking; extra fees to use online banking at all; extra fees to legally use public transport; no downloading of episodes or music from streaming services for offline use; no phone calls depending on your country's 2G status; etc.

Some of these issues are overblown (depending on your situation), and we better take a stand on all of them now, or it will indeed be too late.

> Change jobs? Ride a bicycle? Move to a less oppressive country?

Well yes, why do you seem to frame it like these are impossible ?

> The ability to "run apps" was never even on the table in pre-iPhone era. iPhone, ofc, changed it by pioneering the app market

It was on the table, between the SymbianOS apps for Nokia or the various Java apps for other smartphones.

Meanwhile the first iPhone didn't even have 3rd party app support (or 3G capability) on release, it took around a year.

I'm not even sure I can give you the app market claim, though I presume you meant on the phone itself, rather than having to connect it to a PC ?

(Also whatever BlackBerry was doing ?)

> I have no idea why anyone would call these ultra-packed cameras on steroids a "general purpose computer".

Why not ?? They have even more built-in 'peripherals' and are much more portable than a desktop !

Also, PinePhone wasn't discontinued, only PinePhone *Pro* was.

BlueTemplar··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Well then, it should be more viable today, considering how innovations in the smartphone sector have dramatically slowed down compared to 2005-2015.
BlueTemplar··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
I'm willing to pretend that game consoles aren't general purpose computers –

(though not so much with Xbox any more due to the way how Microsoft is trying to bridge the gap with Windows)

− but I'm not willing to pretend that for the very personal computers that smartphones are.

KISS : Have a separate device to do banking, and ONLY banking on.

(More tech savvy users could instead boot into a different partition.)

Which everyday things ?

At this point we programmers should make our voices heard and make it very clear that people still using platforms, or worse, forcing platforms on others, are collaborating with / are totalitarian extremists.

(Yes, this also means those of you still using GitHub, Discord, Reddit, YouTube...)

That Xitter uses a complex, opaque algorithm, is why it should be banned in the first place.
BlueTemplar··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Not all games. The options are ridiculously more diverse there than for smartphone OSes or even for social media.

I don't understand : in my experience it's still much easier to set up another email account than to deal with authenticator requirements, where you might be forced to use Google's Authenticator ?

Here you go :

And Elon has forfeited the charitable assumption that he wasn't a fascist when he made the fascist salute at the inauguration. Twice.

At such a public event, it doesn't even matter whether he believes it himself : symbols have power.

BlueTemplar··on Twitter Shadow Bans Turkish Presidential Candidate
You should be wary in going there, unless you want to be beholden to the opinions of China + India.
BlueTemplar··on Twitter Shadow Bans Turkish Presidential Candidate
Egg and chicken ?

Anyway, that doesn't matter, what matters is that the people that are still using platforms are effectively collaborating with totalitarian extremists and should be shunned.

BlueTemplar··on FreeDroidWarn
No, you can (and should) instead ostracise people that use Discord. As publicly as possible. That's how you change things.
BlueTemplar··on FreeDroidWarn
Why not ? Worked out fine for asbestos. Technics aren't neutral.

They might have several different passports from different countries.

It's also fairly common for instance for women to have multiple names from their marriage(s).

Luddism -- in this case going without a smartphone altogether -- is quickly becoming the most reasonable option.

You are also quite quick to dismiss cheques as someone that never even tried them...
