Bloating··on Apple and Google deliver support for unwanted tracking alerts in iOS and Android
"We are huge outside of tech bubbles" ... Only the Bubble is huge! Nothing else exists outside the bubble. There shall be no exception.

Social projection is far more common than theft

Regulatory capture isn't just an issue with the FCC. Big Companies benefit from Big Government

I'm surprised Its Lenny has been ported to a cell phone app. At least we can have some fun with this

Bloating··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
just in time for an election year I'm sure its just my imagination, but seems like the moment tickets go on sale most of the good seats are being resold through an official reseller. Its almost like live nation might be scalping their own tickets.
Bloating··on Mental health in software engineering
That makes sense... And the preeminent result of the tech revolution: social media.
Bloating··on Home Assistant: Three years later
When I built my house years ago (well before Thread/Matter), I went through the dog & pony show with the local lutron, creston, vantage dealers. There are a few others around also, like centralite and loxone. It always came down to 1) I didn't want to be beholden to a dealer to change the timing on a light 2) those systems (other than loxone) were/are antiqued.

Ended-up building a PLC based system. Its been rock solid reliable & I can do pretty much anything I can imagine with it. Its a little risky, in that if I ever need to sell I've limited potentional buyers. But, I think thats the case with just about any centralized system. Not long after I looked at a lutron system, the local lutron tech passed away. One house under construction using lutron was brought to a dead standstill. AFAIK, there are no nearby lutron programmers to this day.

However, PLCs are easy to obtain, relatively easy to learn (if you're technical) and just about any small+ city is likely to have control engineers that might be willing to support as a side hussle.

Bloating··on Today's architects can learn from a 19th century's lost ventilation system
I don't remember if it was Poplar Forest or Monticello, but I vaguely remember something about Jefferson using convection to draw cool air through tunnels to help cool the structure(s).

Not related to ventilation, but I found the Trompe compressor to be an interesting example of forgotten technology

Bloating··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier (2022)
I made these for 1) for a post construction clean-up project - lost of dust getting kicked around. Worked like a charm 2) wildfire smoke - Happened to have the material from 1, & it did seem to help

The trick is that the box fan turns over the air much faster than a conventional hepa.

Still, $10 for the ikea filter seems like a good deal if you get good life out of it. 20x20x2 at filterbuy is about $16.5 x4.

Bloating··on Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012)

Bloating··on Growing scientific interest in vagus nerve stimulation
Check eBay for medistrom batteries. I can get 1 night for AirSense 10 (w/o humidity); 2 nights using resmed portable cpap & no issues backpacking with the portable cpap so long as I can get a periodic recharge.
Bloating··on Forget ‘quiet quitting’ – ‘loud laborers’ are killing workplace morale
This is not just a workplace issue, but an issue with human society in general. It occurs in any group. My perception is that those of us on the spectrum are often overlooked unless we speak up... sometimes repeatedly.

I don't know how many times I've been in a group setting where someone said, "I wonder who came up with that great idea" seemingly oblivious

and yet, NTs seem to give credit to each other for simply being in the same room together

Bloating··on FCC fines robocaller a record $300M after blocking billions of their scam calls
Been using this for what seems like years. Initially Google Asst screening would throw some legit callers off base, but I haven't had a false-positive or scam calls for years. Google Asst also manages the call when put on-hold. Would be more fun if it could emulate Its Lenny

Bloating··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
this is corporate greed, end-stage capitalism and Bush's fault. Or is it Trump's fault? And Elon Musk's mgmt of twitter
Bloating··on A reason for high housing prices: restrictive land-use regulations
My observation is that homeowners tend to be more involved in local government, and have a personal incentive for their homes / land to increase in value. For most, homes are thier single largest investment. Intentionally or not, they use the force of government to insure / inflate the value of their property

Bloating··on A reason for high housing prices: restrictive land-use regulations
The age of majority should be increased, but the rest of your suggestions would be gamed. Requiring landownership was a thing was once, and not a good thing.

I believe age 18 came about because of the Vietnam War draft. Old enough to die; old enough to vote & drink. Something to consider.

The tax system is a problem also. There's an agency issue; it all about getting someone else to pay more taxes. Don't want to open that can of worms now.
