BjornW··on Ask HN: Recommend chair to comfortably support my hacker ass for 12+ hours a day?
I use some chairs that were in use by a local supermarket and which got thrown out due changes in the interior. It may sound silly, but keep in mind that the people behind the counter need to set for long periods of time just like your average hacker. These chairs can be lifted to the point where I (my height: 1.96m) cannot put my feet straight on the ground anymore, have several 'joints' to setup and are the most comfy chairs I've ever used. I don't know the brand, so you probably need to ask at your local supermarket. Best of all I got mine for free.
BjornW··on Ask HN: Anyone used Lua Kepler?
Good to hear the work been put into it Kepler could be used by doing something else as well. Nice to know the system was well designed.
BjornW··on Ask HN: Anyone used Lua Kepler?
Thanks. Could you elaborate why you used Kepler and Lua? Was this specifically due to the usage of Lua in WoW addon programming?
BjornW··on Ask HN: Best encryption solution for personal stuff (images, videos etc)?
It depends on what you want to do. Do you want full-disk encryption or just one encrypted partition/file? Personally I use full-disk encryption. From what I've read its recommended to encrypt the whole system and not just a partition if you don't want important data leaking into the non-encrypted parts of your system.

On Ubuntu Server I selected full LVM encryption during installation. Everything except the /boot is encrypted, which works great without too much overhead even on this aging 1,3 Ghz machine. I heard good things about TrueCrypt as well, which should work with OS X and Windows but I haven't used it myself.

Btw I did use Filevault on OS X for my whole disk and the experience was less than pleasant. Especially with resume and hibernation. This was with 10.3 (Panther), so it might be better now.

BjornW··on Use PHP to build a Twitter-like system on your site
Interesting. I would have given the same answer some time ago, yet lately I have the feeling that I learn more from installing, configure and dive into somebody else' code and extend / change it than writing something from scratch. I guess both are valid 'methods' to learn, although the latter benefits open source projects like laconi.ca as well.

I haven't read the article in full, but I wonder why the author hasn't used laconi.ca (the free open source software which is used by identi.ca). Why should you be creating a new microblogging solution when a perfectly good open platform exists?

Mhhm add another network connection, install Tor , privoxy and perhaps some other network encryption / clean up tools. Config with sensible defaults et voila: nice userfriendly device to overcome data retention.
